Obama vs. Mitt Romney: Economy, Independents Would Be Key In Potential 2012 Match-Up

First Posted: 06/20/11 04:01 PM ET Updated: 08/20/11 06:12 AM ET

Barack Obama Mitt Romney 2012

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While it is still very early, indications are that the most likely match up in the 2012 presidential election will be between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who leads polls among Republicans.

Romney, the only holdover from the 2008 Republican presidential field who has reached double-digits in recent opinion polls, performed well in a debate last week and has shown he can mount a multimillion-dollar fundraising push.

"Romney is the best opportunity for the Republicans to have a well-funded campaign," said Jonathan Collegio, communications director at the conservative group American Crossroads. "He's basically been running for six years and he has a network of local leaders and fundraisers across the country."

The winner of the Republican nomination will not be known for many months and Romney would first need to defeat rivals like Michele Bachmann, who is shaping up as the conservative Republican champion, before he can take on Obama.

There also is the chance a relative unknown could enter the race and overtake Romney, whose campaigning style is seen as awkward. Some conservatives also view Romney with suspicion because he was a moderate governor and some evangelical Christians are uncomfortable with his Mormon religion.

But if Romney does come out on top in the primaries, the battle lines in a fight between him and the Democratic president are clear.
With the election 17 months away, most polls show Obama with a lead of 6 percent to 7 percent over Romney and a Reuters poll this month had Obama leading Romney by 13 percent.

The key to the general election for both men will be to win over independent voters not strongly allied with either party.

Romney is one of the most moderate Republican candidates and could appeal to independents, although he has moved away from more centrist policies like the healthcare overhaul he put into place in Massachusetts and which conservatives find too similar to Obama's healthcare plan.

"The other Romney, the old Romney, would make a really interesting campaign against Obama," said Clyde Wilcox, a government professor at Georgetown University in Washington, citing Romney's record on healthcare, cleaning up the Olympics when he organized the Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 and working with a Democratic legislature while governor.

"The problem is, to get the Republican nomination he's running away from that," Wilcox said.

An Obama versus Romney contest would hinge as well on the economy and the contrast between the two men's personalities.

Barring an unexpectedly quick recovery, Romney will hammer Obama on his failure to create enough jobs and tout his own real-world experience as a multimillionaire businessman.

"Obama's prospects are largely tied up with economic conditions. Economic growth and disposable income -- those are the key factors," said Richard Eichenberg, a political science professor at Tufts University, outside Boston.

"If they don't turn around and start to look up, then Romney's prospects look better."

ROMNEY RECORD

The Obama team, in turn, will try to poke holes in Romney's business record, charge him with "flip-flopping on issues and contrast his somewhat stilted style with Obama's more natural talent for connecting with voters.

"He's been on a reinvention tour since the 1990s," said a Democratic strategist familiar with the campaign.

Romney was considered by many to be the winner of the first major Republican debate, partly by avoiding arguments with his party rivals and keeping his focus on knocking Obama on the economy.

"This race will be about the economy and people know that President Obama has done a terrible job," said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul. "No one in the race can come close to matching Mitt Romney's 25-year experience in the real world economy."

Democrats contend that Romney overstates his accomplishments in Massachusetts, which ranked 47th out of the 50 states in job creation while he was governor. They plan to stress that Romney's firm, Bain Capital, made money for rich investors by slashing the jobs of regular Americans.

Obama has remained reasonably popular even when his policy ratings have flagged and unemployment has hit 9.1 percent, while Romney has committed gaffes such as joking to unemployed workers in Florida last week that he is also out of work.

"You take a candidate whom the press will constantly refer to as someone with an authenticity problem and a certain plasticity to his reputation ... versus a guy whom the voters seem to think is a pretty good guy, Barack Obama," Eichenberg said, asked if Obama could be the first president in decades to be re-elected with unemployment over 7.2 percent.

"Maybe he will break the mold, we'll see. Many people have lost money betting against Barack Obama."

Foreign policy is expected to take a back seat to economic concerns in 2012 but the inexperienced Romney raised eyebrows among some Republicans last week by saying U.S. troops should come home from Afghanistan as quickly as possible and that only the Afghans themselves could win freedom from the Taliban.

If Romney makes it in as candidate, there goes the infamous "flip-flopping" quip used by the conservatives against liberals. Now wait, they will call it "rethinking," "negotiating," or just "adjusting to the situation."

Point to ponder. IF Romney threw his hat into the Republican pool the last time we saw this picture. How did he come out? Nowhere. So, my question is this. What makes him think and the Republicans feel that he can come out ahead this time around? He is old news. Same platform, same delivery, same baggage---didn't win. McCain got it. So Romney? Again? I as a Democrat, don't think they will give him a second chance to prevail. Just my opinion from the other side. My horse in this race is Ron Paul. Might as well make it fun to watch.

You raise valid points. Republicans clearly don't like the Mormon, healthcare promoting Romney.

The problem is obvious - they are deluged by candidates who are either flatly stupid, or mad as hatters. Their line-up has been an open joke for weeks now.

If Romney gets the nomination it will be by default of the clowns around him. Romney is a lousy debater - quite dull at the podium, and immature and unmeasured in his responses.
I like Ron Paul even if I cannot endorse some of his positions, but he is too far off the reservation, and Huntsman gives a superb imitation of a real person, but the Mad Tea Party will not let him dine at their table.

JBaker: I saw Huntsman's entry speech with the Statue of Liberty backdrop. Nice optics. And he looked presidential, and he declared a civil campaign, plus he did not bash Obama in a harsh dogmatic way, in fact he made a very common sense statement that I think the Obama haters in that bunch don't get or fail to admit. He said something to the effect that he and Obama may disagree on some policy issues (how to run the country) and hope that the electorate vote on who they think will be the best President, NOT who is the better American, we both (he and Obama) love this country equally.....
See, now that man is civil and NOT a crazed Presidential wannabe. Read, he does NOT have to bash Obama personally (name calling and all that) but on the issues where they differ. Sounds good to me. BUT, the "hate" Obama crazies in this country (Republicans in particular) may not warm up to those principles. So, lets see.what happens to Huntsman going forward.

No, the times in the USA are not as prosperous as anyone would like, but, is it really due to weak leadership under President Obama, and, if his leadership has been weak, is this necessarily so bad. First, the hand has was dealt the finanical panic of 2008, the Great Recession, and, very nearly, another Great Depression, has dramatically narrowed his options, focusing virutally all of the national attention on economics and unemployment. The fact is, that we do NOT have unemployment of 15%+ today because of the actions of his administration, an assertion, that I cannot prove to his critics, but, which, of course, no one can disprove either. Further, Obama's healthcare plan was an example of bold leadership, which of course his critics decry, because they disagree philosophically, with the law. Further, the President's financial regulatory reform bill shows strong leadership, although greatly watered down by phenomenal industry lobbying and Repub opposition, it does demonstrate some vision.

On the other hand, is strong, bold leadership always such a good thing. Do remember President W's 8 years as Pres, boy, I do. I guess he was a bold and strong leader, but, at what a cost to the USA and to the world. Do you remember 9/11, the financial panic of 2008, the diminishment of the US's international image, and, the point when the USA lost it's moral and ethical vision. Strong leadership may also transate into arrogant and poor leadership, it is not always an unmitigated blessing.

Joe Biden tried to warn us back in 2007 during the domocratic primary that Obama would require "on the job training" if he were to become president. Probably, the only truth that ever escaped Joe's lips. Obama has had 2-1/2 years to prove himself, and he hasn't even taken off the "training wheels" yet.
08:35 AM on 06/21/2011
He will not listen. He will not learn. He is not trainable. He has limited skill set. The extent of his capability is as Community Organizer. He epitomizes the Peter Principle as Prez of the US.

Israel and her right to exist with passion, but never before has the need to stand up for Israel been so severe as today. That the President should have delivered such a blow against Israel in the face of the Palestinian Authority's new alliance with Hamas – the terror group that tried to exterminate it, wants to exterminate all Jews, and has vowed never to acknowledge a Jewish State – is incomprehensible. We cannot allow Barack Obama to single-handedly destroy Israel.

Paul Ryan would be great choice because his RyanCare plan would directly contradict Romney's neo-Obama healthcare plan, and they would spend the entire election season explaining the difference. The positive part of this is that seniors on Medicare would then all vote for Obama.
