A Regional Transportation District light rail train hit and killed a cyclist Sunday afternoon at 13th and Osage.
RTD spokeswoman Daria Serna said the crossing arms were down, warning lights were flashing, and bells were ringing.
Both a northbound and southbound train were traveling through the intersection. Witnesses said the cyclist waited for the northbound train to pass, traveled around the crossing arm to cross the street, and was hit by the southbound train. Denver police spokeswoman Detective Leslie Branch-Wise speculated the man did not see the southbound train because it was obscured by the northbound train.
Light rail passenger Richard Martinez said, "all of a sudden he just slammed on his brakes, saw a bunch of chunks of rocks fly to the side, and then [I saw] the body just fly over the fence."
