iPhone 5 Release Rumor Points To August Availability And A New Look

Iphone 5 Release August

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/21/11 01:44 PM ET Updated: 08/21/11 06:12 AM ET

A "reliable source" has informed Boy Genius Report that Apple is readying its next iPhone for a release later this summer. The device is informally known as the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, depending on whom you ask.

"According to our source," BGR reports, "Apple may hold an event in the beginning or middle of August to announce the new iPhone, with availability to follow in the last week of August."

Recent reports have said that an iPhone 4S will feature slightly upgraded internal components but will look fairly similar to the current iPhone 4. However, BGR's tipster said that the forthcoming device could look starkly different from its predecessor.

Writes BGR, "We have been told [...] to expect a radical new case design for the upcoming iPhone, though we have not been given any additional details surrounding the design of the new iPhone case."

Other rumors have suggested a September release date for the next iPhone handset. Still others have claimed that a true iPhone 5, featuring a whole new look and overhauled internal components, will make its way to market early in 2012.

Do you think a new iPhone is coming this year? Weigh in via our QuickPoll.

Quick Poll

iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 later this year will NOT be a major overhaul. THAT will come in the Spring of 2012 as either the iPhone 5 or iPhone 6.

How about a poll entry for "No, and I don't care."?
08:17 AM on 06/22/2011
I wish the poll had an answer that was: "how the hell should I know, I read the article to find out!"

Wow, it is going to look really different?  I guess we better start lining up at the apple stores right away because we wouldn't want to be holding a phone with the old appearance for even a second longer than we had to!

(and yes, that was sarcasm)

What's funny about your comment is that you have nailed most of the latter iPhone adopters...the non-nerds who had to have the "popular" thing. (Nerds worry about cool...not usually 'popular')

SOME of us out here are actually smartphone power users...heavy web traffic...using the phone for things other than calls & facebook...heavy video usage, both loaded and streamed...etc.

The NEW device will likely be a departure from the older devices, and I say this based on Apple's past history, not so much any 'insider' tips. I have been holding out on upgrading from my 3G model until the 5 is released. Sadly, the processor and memory in the 3G device is officially 'meh' with the latter versions of the iOS software, so a lot of us could really use some more powerful hardware.

The iphone 4 is a great device. But not SO great that it makes me want to sign a new contract.

True, the smartphone power users are going to be the ones that care about the iPhone 5 having the A5 chip instead of the A4 chip, not whether it is a different appearance or color. But are those the folks camping out in line for the hoopala? Nah, they most likely preordered online...

Another way to have written this article would have been to say, "We know absolutely nothing about when the iPhone 5 will be released or what changes will be introduced relative to the current iPhone 4 on the market."

It's true. I was given one to test. But there was a feature I couldn't figure out and it maybe a show stopper. First, the phone design. It was cylindrical in shape with one end open and the other end closed. Very futuristic. What I couldn't figure out was this very long string attached to the closed end. But it had the Apple logo and I figure it will be a big seller if users can figure out how to operate it.

glad you waited in line for hours, got the iphone$400 and the new 2 year agreement only to have it be obsolete before it shipped to the store and now guess what? there is a brand new shiny one to waste $4oo on and a brand new 2 year agreement. Congratulations you wasted your time, money and should feel had. Unless the new design comes with a screen that wont shatter when sneezed on too hard I will not be going after the carrot.

Now, why don't you go home and get your shine box?
08:11 AM on 06/22/2011
hmmm.... so, on one hand, the prior one was outdated when new, so it draws your criticism, but now, when they want to bring a new model out, that's a bad thing too.
OK, so the only way they could please you would be to silently leave the market?
By definition, you are "Unreasonable".
A lot of other bashers were upset that Apple didn't intro a new model at the Developer's Conference last month. Now, other basher would have been upset if they DID! LOL!
I won't even touch your $400 and sneeze comments. Whatever!

they are fragile phones you cannot deny that. They lock up constantly, they drop more calls than most phones. I am not bashing apple. I am bashing the people who continue to buy apple. I am bashing them for being gullible about apples claims on the superiority of their new models only to implement new upgrades within months. How can steve jobs ethically sell a room full of people on the premise that it is the best when he has better in his office waiting for him? are you so naive as to believe they do not rush new models to the market for profit when they could make a little less money for a few months and unveil something superior? I'm not unreasonable. the reason the new iPhone is a bad thing too as you say is because it's obsolete already while rumors are swirling about potential releases. if they're so progressive, so inventive why don't they wait, make the product correctly and have a phone so great they do not need to remake it every few months? I have had three iphones, they are cool and do what they do but they are too fragile for the price and nothing on them is open source. Plus they forgot to mention they have been tracking users for years. you know, for a hippy founded company they're very big brother. IBM would be proud.

All of Apple's hand toys are being designed for consumption and not for business. I am sticking with my 'berry.

I was a bb user for years, totally devoted until a few weeks ago when the ball in my 9000 went out for the 4th time.

I used my assistant's iphone for a few hours, the one I always gave her c rap about for the past 3 years.. I purchased an iphone later that day. For business, it was like moving from training wheels to a motorcycle. Give it a try for few days, you might change your mind. I still like BB, but wow.. and I'm not an app / games / gizmos / kid / toy kind of user.

I guess that's why multiple business industries are buying iPad's for work use. I guess that's why, despite budget crunches, educators are trying to buy them for classrooms. Funny.

Hmmm, think maybe the fact that Apple rumors make news says something about their products and popularity...?

lots of things make headlines for rumors that are neither a production of quality nor popularity. the iphone5 will be as obsolete the second you have it in your hand as the iphone4 was. If the product is so great why must they improve it every 6 months?
02:33 AM on 06/22/2011
Simple... It's called progress. They don't want to end up Microsoft... stagnant, frail, and failing. I got my first macbook a few months ago. I put it through so much more than I put any of my PCs through... It hasn't frozen once. It start up from being completely shut down in under 30 seconds. And when it starts up it's ready to go; no waiting for it to tie it's shoes. If it's asleep, I open the lid and it is ready to use; instantly.

Rumors on popular topics are always more likely to receive notice than rumors on more mundane topics. State-of-the-art in electronics changes rapidly. Upgrades and improvements are most often unrelated to product quality or greatness. New models come out regularly in the field. Have you looked at TV's lately? Many brands have multiple models of basically the same set. I gather from your comment that you must envy, dislike or resent Apple.

Android users and haters can tlak all they want. Jealousy is a terrible friend.

The lines will form again for this new Apple product, like before and unlike the lack of lines for weak, copycat Android products.

Hey, how's that Honeycomb working out? :)

What happened to Android seems like all th news is Apple and Microsoft now. Kind of strange no longer innovating in the Android world?

Another enigmatic iPhone rumor (that, by the way, contradicts an earlier rumor)? Cool story... get back to us when they've announced something concrete please.
02:34 AM on 06/22/2011
"They" are people who really have no idea what they're talking about. Apple hasn't said anything yet... which is annoying... But my guess is we'll know it's coming out about a week or two before it does.

I got the Atrix recently and LOVE it. Just couldn't take being penned into Apple's sandbox any longer. Don't begrudge iPhone lovers but my four year experience with succeeding generations was that the devices were seriously overrated and limited in flexibility and adaptability to different uses beyond simple entertainment.
05:06 PM on 06/21/2011
I guess that explains how every Andriod phone is competing against one company for market share. Guess that also explains how the tablet market is even more bleak for these same companies who simply follow a trend or market rather than create one.

I'll stick to the quality Apple product that changed the game :)

Name one thing not involving porn that the android os does better than the iOS? Apps with better functionality? Even the developers would disagree with you there. Flash? HTML 5 is far better and much less of an energy drain. I could go on and on and on, but just say you like android. If you really think the iOS is only good for entertainment, that just shows you didn't spend much time exploring the device or the app store.
