John McCain 'Puzzled' By Anger Over Arizona Wildfire Remarks (VIDEO)

John Mccain Arizona Wildfires Illegal Immigrants

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain says he's "puzzled" that there's a controversy surrounding remarks he made suggesting illegal immigrants were responsible for some of the massive wildfire in eastern Arizona.

McCain said during an appearance on NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday morning that all he was doing was repeating information he'd been given by federal officials at a briefing that occurred before he appeared at a news conference last weekend.

McCain said, "We all know that people who come across our border illegally ... that these fires are sometimes, some of them, caused by this." He added "I'm puzzled .. that there should be any controversy."

McCain earlier had said that illegal immigrants "have set fires because they wanted to signal others ... and they have set fires because they wanted to divert law enforcement agents."

As if Arizona's immigration debate wasn't already hot, McCain ignited a barrage of criticism by saying that there is "substantial evidence" that illegal immigrants are partly responsible for wildfires in the state.

"It's his constant refrain for everything that ails mankind," said Roberto Reveles, the founding president and a current member of the Phoenix-based Hispanic civil rights group Somos America. "It just seems like we have an epidemic of, `Blame it all on the illegal aliens, blame it all on the Mexicans.' It's amazing that the public doesn't rebel against this type of scapegoating."

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) issued a stern response to the suggestion made by his home state senator.

"Senator McCain’s comments continue to provoke an extreme anti-immigrant and anti-Latino atmosphere in Arizona," said the Arizona congressman, according to Politico. “This level of intolerance has reached a new low.”

CBS News reports:

Angelo Falcon, president of the National Institute for Latino Policy, said McCain's statements were "irresponsible" and that "he's getting as much traction as he can politically" by taking a hard-line approach on immigration.

"Right away he jumped in and started talking about persons coming across the border," Falcon told Hotsheet on Monday, arguing that it was "irresponsible to jump to those conclusions and make those statements before there was any evidence."

The ruckus over McCain's comments came as thousands of evacuated Arizonans were allowed to return home from a wildfire that has destroyed 58 homes on the outskirts of Sierra Vista, Ariz., about 15 miles north of the Mexico border. An estimated 1,600 people remain evacuated.

The high winds that prompted additional evacuations and destroyed 14 homes and four businesses Sunday became considerably calmer Monday.

"We are very, very upbeat and confident that we are starting to turn a corner," said Mark Goeller, operations chief for the team fighting the so-called Monument fire, which has burned more than 42 square miles since it started about a week ago. It was 40 percent contained Monday night.

Along the border with New Mexico, the biggest blaze in state history has charred an area nearly 20 times that size but hasn't done as much damage to structures.

Despite burning more than 811 square miles since late May, the Wallow fire has destroyed just 32 homes and four rental cabins. Containment rose to 56 percent Monday.

The third major blaze, in the far southeastern part of the state, was 80 percent contained after charring more than 330 square miles since it started May 8. That fire, dubbed Horseshoe Two, has destroyed 23 structures.

Officials say all three blazes are the result of human activity. Whether illegal immigrants were involved – as has sometimes been the case – is unknown.

The issue heated up over the weekend when McCain told reporters: "There is substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally. The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border."

McCain and fellow Arizona Republicans Sen. Jon Kyl and Rep. Paul Gosar released a joint statement Monday defending McCain, saying they had been told that some fires in the southern part of the state are started by illegal immigrants. They did not specify to which fires they were referring but framed the debate as a distraction.

"While Arizonans continue to face the enormous challenges related to these wildfires, it's unfortunate that some are inserting their political agenda into this tragedy," their statement said.

Grijalva, a Democrat who represents southwestern Arizona, disagreed with that depiction.

"They served this, they pandered it, and now (they) say that anybody who criticizes that inappropriate, unsubstantiated claim somehow has a political agenda. This is a tragedy of huge proportions for Arizona. Those of us who criticize it are only reacting to what they started."

On the fire lines in Sierra Vista, neighborhoods that had been shrouded in a massive plume of black smoke a day earlier were free of it Monday, and the towering mountain that fed the flames was smoldering.

Those forced from their homes waited to be escorted back in.

James Hernandez, a retired graphic artist who lives in Hereford, rushed back from vacation in California on Saturday when he heard that the fire had worsened and had jumped four-lane state Route 92.

"The flames went over that," Hernandez said, noting that wildfires are a part of summer life in southern Arizona and normally aren't cause for concern. "They have never done that before."

As for the Wallow blaze, authorities kept about 200 residents of Luna, N.M., under an evacuation order for a third day Monday. One of the last areas still evacuated near that fire in Arizona reopened Monday as residents of the resort town of Greer began to return home.

Authorities reported a new wildfire in north-central Arizona that officials said could threaten power lines running to Phoenix as well as some scattered ranches. The blaze, about 40 miles northeast of Payson, had burned about 305 acres by Monday.

There were several other significant wildfires burning across the southwestern U.S.:

_ Officials in southeast Texas ordered the evacuation of about 1,800 homes and businesses as a fire believed to have been sparked by a barbecue pit burned early 8 square miles northwest of Houston. Two people were injured and nearly 30 homes were destroyed. It was one of many blazes firefighters were battling across the drought-plagued state, including 20 others that the Texas Forest Service said involved more than 120 square miles and consumed at least 35 homes combined.

_ Firefighters in central California were battling a blaze that has burned more than 8 square miles of grassland. A 19th century cattle branding camp and another outbuilding were destroyed. The blaze was 75 percent contained early Monday and full containment was expected by Tuesday.

_ Nine miles north of Santa Fe, N.M., smoke rose from the mountains for a third afternoon as the Pacheco Canyon fire marched toward the rugged Pecos Wilderness. The fire spread to 3,800 acres, or about 6 square miles, by Monday. No homes were in the path of the flames, but a power line was threatened.

I should think that these latest monumentally idiotic comments would prove that the man is clueless to any remaining supporters as the rest of us suspected a long long time ago.

For the people who insistent that undocumented immigrants, particularly Mexican immigrants, are taking American jobs away from its citizens, I would like to challenge you to prove you are right! Take a look at this website, http://ufw.org/_board.php?mode=view&b_code=org_key_back&b_no=7147

It's called the "Take Our Jobs" campaign, sponsored by United Farm Workers. They basically are telling Americans, "Go ahead, take our (undocumented workers') jobs!" So, go ahead -- take those American jobs back! I'll be looking for YOU the next time I drive by that strawberry field on my way to work at 7:00 a.m. to see if you make good on your insistence!

Why don't you talk about the construction industry? I see more illegal aliens in the home depot parking lots than in the fields. Why don't you talk about the restaurant industry? Why don't you talk about the hotel industry? Could it be because you know that what YOU are trying to say is a LIE? Even IF illegal aliens did not take jobs(Which is NOT true) they are STILL ILLEGAL! What part of illegal don't you understand? NOW I HAVE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU: Please provide ONE VALID REASON WHY America should reward illegal alien lawbreakers amnesty for breaking our laws and entering this country illegally? JUST ONE VALID REASON? Is this fair to all those that do it legally? I know you will not answer because THERE IS NO VALID REASON WHY America should reward illegal aliens with amnesty for breaking our laws. One more thing: I always hear you cry racism when anyone against illegal aliens speaks about illegal immigration but I see that you say illegal aliens and in the same breath say mexicans so how racist is that? I think you should start telling the truth but for you to do that it would not suit your needs.

Farmers need to automate harvesting to stem the problem. Many farmers in other parts of the world and the U.S. have done this. The fact remains that illegals do take jobs from U.S. Citizens, and this is especially hard for unemployed teens.

We could go into diseases, especially the recent Whooping Cough outbreaks which has hit our nation caused by illegal immigrants. How about the expense of educating the children? It runs $9,000.00 per student and there are millions of illegal immigrant students in our K-12 system, and many who like La Raza and call for the return of the U.S. Southwest to Mexico. Geez, and we pay for their education.

One of the issues I have is that many people want to keep blaming undocumented immigrants for taking US jobs, rather than holding the US employers who hire them accountable. If every American employer hired only documented immigrants, many of the undocumented ones, who come to the US for work, would soon have no more impetus to come across the “border.”

Another thing I contemplate is what this country's blue-collar labor force would look like if the US were to remove all undocumented workers from the workforce. Who would farm our fields? cook our restaurant food? build our buildings? clean our hotel rooms? While some Americans would do this type of work, there are just as many who feel they are "above" this type of work. I've known people who have stayed unemployed rather than take a job at a fast food restaurant or convenience store because they were "better than that."

Finally, why don't focus some of their ire over job shortages toward the corporations that ship their operations to other countries. Why are people from India fielding my calls to my American bank when I have a question about my bill? It's easy to blame the most accessible population we view as "lesser" than we are, i.e. the undocumented immigrant population. However, these corporations have caused plenty of havoc on our economy. We should hold the less accessible, but just as culpable population, i.e. corporate executives and stock holders, accountable for our job shortage.

Senator McCain paints a broad stroke without proof. I do wish he would address CREATING JOBS within Arizona and throughout the United States and give as much time to this as AMERICANS are being foreclosed on daily with over 2 MILLION out of work and growing. Senator McCain I have sent you letters regarding the hundreds of jobs waiting to be filled here
www.KB-America.com to put legal AMERICANS to work NOW. Here there are many opportunities awarded in the real to those who are suffering and hurting. Take time to address these issues. We'll put out the fires Senator but in the interim help me hire Americans who need to put food on their tables and save their home!!! This Senator McCain you can be proud of and save a family from separating. I have a copy of the PORK FUNDING you came against in the MILLIONS so please send some of these funds my way and I'll put Americans back to work and save some homes. This is your State Senator and I'm asking once again. Thank you.

"substantial evidence" that illegal immigrants are partly responsible for wildfires in the state. Who is he kidding, I guess he's talking only for people in AZ. Substantial evidence/partly responsible? That says nothing. What? They found a bottle of salsa? If they had found a bottle of Heinz catchup it would be John Kerry the responsible? Why don't they ask the illegals who they were working for? Ohh we know the answer: Americans! Same thing blame the cartel for the drugs, but who consumes 60% of the world's drug. Yes, we do! Now Mr. Republicans where are the jobs you promised? Sorry, I see now, you've been busy cutting taxes, trying to destroy SS and Medicare. Wel, will you please go back to job creation when you're finished? Thank you.

I realize this is stereotyping a bit, but to me Arizona is a horrible state in every way. It's beautiful but filled with water-guzzling gringos who abuse the land and discriminate against peole who lived there long before "the white man" arrived. They're happy using undocumented immigrants to mow their lawns, cook their food and care for their children but they balk at giving them any legal status, even those people who came to this country as young children. New Mexico (despite its nasty new governor) is a much more pleasant place to visit and live.

- "John McCain Puzzled"
Not news.

- There are 400 wildfires burning in Florida right now. Why isn't the whacko rightwinger Governor blaming them on illegal aliens? Guess even he can't convince the "they're taking our jobs and costing us money" people that illegals are trying to cross the border between the Everglades and the settled areas.

- I am curious, has anyone looked into the possibility that some of these fires may have been caused by unemployed "legal" Americans who have no place to live?

Maybe his constituents should be asking him why, in over 25 years in Office, he hasn't secured the border by now. It's not like he hasn't had ample time and this "problem" didn't just happen in the last few years.

Sooo, What is it he's been doing for Arizona ?

Hello! That is EXACTLY RIGHT! The thing is all the arizona businesses who pay peanuts to these workers would not be as successful.
