13 Worst Books To Read On The Beach (PICTURES)

First Posted: 06/21/11 10:28 AM ET   Updated: 08/21/11 06:12 AM ET

When Michele Bachmann recently said that her preferred beach reading is notorious libertarian economist Ludwig von Mises, many were puzzled by the claim that anyone would want to spend a relaxing afternoon in the sun reading about the propensity of taxation. But we found some books that are much worse reading fare for the beach. Let us know if you agree!

Nothing like rounding up the family, putting on your trunks, heading to the sand and curling up with a good book about environmental malaise. (via Amazon)

"So That Others Might Live" is the motto of the USAF Para-Rescue Service.
"Semper Partatus" is the mottto of the US Coast Guard.

And, yes, if somebody were drowning at sea, I'd call the USCG in a herartbeat!

Here’s some they missed:

"My Mellow Melanoma"
(Story of a simple pimple gone bad)

"The Broken Bottle Stepping Stone"
(Sections will make you wince)

"Sand Fleas and Me"
(This one gets under your skin)

"The Sand Crevices"
(It’s everywhere and it hurts)

"Stingers in My Speedos"
(A tale of Jelly Fish and Wee Willie Winkie’s last Stand)

"Dead Zone Surf"
(Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. Well it IS safe, because the whole ocean is dead now.)

"Naked Body Tyres"
(Some things Can Never Be Unseen)

"Turn Down Your Radio!"
(First hand account of the infamous Parasol Riots)

"Slick Willie"
(When Willie the Killer Whale met BP)

"On the Beach" by Neville Shute, about the aftermath of a short and stupid nuclear war.

Or "Callahan's Key" by Spider Robinson -- so entertaining you won't notice the sunburn till it's too late.

How about the fictional An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, about rising beaches, and Florida disappearing...haha. Hilarious beach read.

I don't know about the worst but, the best has to be the whole series written by Tim Dorsey - Serge A. Storms' and Coleman's adventures through Florida are so over the top and hilarious that your laughing will prevent sunburn and scare the sand fleas away.

Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart, so nipples are possible I suppose. If you want a semi-creepy beach read, try Duma Key. Steven King can make even gently lapping waves seem sinister.

"Stingray bit my nipple" is a hilarious book and an easy travel read with many laugh-out-loud stories. It comes in a Kindle edition, too. As far as I can remember the stingray story is one of only a few that are beach related.
