Zachary Hartwell: Ryan Dunn's Car Crash Passenger

First Posted: 06/21/11 10:28 AM ET Updated: 08/21/11 06:12 AM ET

"Jackass" star Ryan Dunn was not the only person to die in the tragic car crash in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania early Monday. He had a passenger, whose identity has now been revealed.

The passenger was Zachary Hartwell, one of the men posing in the photos Dunn posted to Twitter of himself drinking with friends just hours before the crash. Hartwell was a Navy SEAL with three tours of duty in Iraq, RadarOnline.com reports. He had been married less than a year, to wife Rachel.

UPDATE: SOCNet.com reports that Hartwell was indeed in the Navy, but not a SEAL.

A 30-year old from West Chester, PA, he was a stunt car driver in Bam Margera's 2009 film, "Minghags."

The pair died in a fiery crash at around 2:38 Monday morning. Dunn may have been speeding at the time, and though he had been drinking alcohol, the initial police report did not indicate that intoxication was suspected as part of the reason for the crash.

In the photo below, he is pictured to the viewer's right, opposite Dunn.

Maybe I'm making too much of the photo but they look like true alcoholics. Or at least die-hard partiers. When I enjoy a drink I'm not pointing at it, or making a thumbs up about it, etc.

There needs to be more societal emphasis about not allowing drinkers to drive their vehicles. I'm not saying a law but there needs to be outrage against folks who get behind the wheel drunk.

What caused this wreck was the combination of alcohol, speeding, wreckless lack of regard for others and pure stupidity. Bye, Bye. I hope he left a will, but I'm sure there will be lawsuit from the family of the passenger.

Hopefully this tragedy will make someone think twice before drinking and driving, but I doubt it. We think it'll never happen to ourselves.

There, but for the grace of God, go I. I don't drink and drive anymore, but have been known to in the past. Sometimes it takes awhile for responsibility to kick in, and hopefully through dumb luck you survive those years. I have laughed pretty hard during the "Jackass" movies, but they really have no socially redeeming value. Also, I think they are dangerous if seen by totally numb-brained people - who go out and try their hand at duplicating the movie stunts - to say nothing of the kind of messages it sends to young minds. The lure of money is great but I am sure I would not have done the things Dunn did on the screen. So his contribution to society has to be questioned. I wasn't an ardent fan and frankly, didn't know who he was at first. Also, I think that the title "Jackass Star" is one I wouldn't want to be tagged with - how degrading. Can their be such a thing? I lived in PA and there are no 130 mph speed limits - and speed is what kills most of the time. Drunk or not he is dead. I am thankful no others died.

you really have no clue. how you didn't crash driving drunk is far more than dumb luck, it's a miracle

Drink...drive...death....

I see that health pictures are being placed on cigarettes rather than just a printed health warning so where are the pictures on alcoholic beverages? Politicians don't like to smoke but love alcohol I suppose. Pity.

Yeah, let's put a warning label on EVERYTHING, because Americans are SO fricking stupid that they have no idea at all that alcohol might impair their driving ability without a giant warning sticker plastered on every glass of wine and cocktail served in very restaurant. Is that what you are saying, really? That Americans are really THAT dumb?
08:12 AM on 06/24/2011
Yes it's sad! I think that if they want to put pictures of what (could) happen when people smoke then they should put pictures of what (could) happen when people drink....Yes I know not everyone who drinks abuses alcohol but the way I see it....if you don't start....you don't have to worry about causing accidents from drinking....Alcohol may not kill as many people as smoking/obesity in instances of illness, but I'd bet anything that if you'd look at close to 99.5% of murders/spousal abuse/rapes....etc....alcohol is a culprit! I also don't know how people can be so politcally correct and worry about what might happen after being exposed to "second-hand" smoke years from now but don't seem to worry about what might happen 10 minutes after being exposed to alcohol.....finally....isn't it against the law to serve a noticeably intoxicated person alcohol....so how do bars and restaurants get by with it.....?

Actually I'm surprised he lived this long, I know I couldn't do half of the things he does and still stay alive. I doubt he is as concerned about his death as much as people are.

Even one glass can impair your judgement. As far as I'm concerned, if I drink, I don't drive. EVER!! I don't want a minor miscalculation on my part to result in major pain and horror for other people. And, if I died in the interim...I wouldn't want the one's I left behind to feel guilty, and ashamed, etc. There's no reason for this. It's just stupid and senseless.

What a waste. Hopefully other people will learn from the mistakes that were made...

Don't drink and drive... and don't hop in a car with someone you know has been drinking... we here it all the time but unfortunately this happens way too often. :(

Someone recommended much earlier in the thread that 911s should be illegal. I don't know if that was sarcasm or not, but what they should do is make a new class of license for high performance car (which could be defined by HP:Weight or something like that) just like they have for motorcycles. It could have special stipulations (DWI is automatic revocation, lower "safe" BAC [because that's really a sham, anyway], more stringent driving tests and/or age restrictions, special safety courses, and basically a "driving without a license" charge for driving such a vehicle without the proper license). I don't think that's too crazy since we already have so many different license classes and restrictions already. I mean, if i have a normal license and normally drive a 1985 4-cylinder Chevy Celebrity, I am, technically, able to get behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 turbo blah blah. That seems stupid. These cars are dangerous if you don't know what you're doing just like a motorcycle and just like a commercial truck. They just aren't the same as a run-of-the-mill family sedan.

First of all, condolences to the families & loved-ones, of these two men. Secondly, how many times do we have to read about these types of horrific accidents, to get people to understand that alcohol or narcotics, does not mix, well, with gasoline? SUPERMAN is not a real person. And, all of these people who think that they can behave, like a man-of-steel, and risk hurling their bodies into unmovable objects (such as walls, trees, buildings, and other vehicles) while operating a motor-vehicle, are likely to suffer a sad, and often fatal reality.
In short: DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! PERIOD!!
