Arizona Wildfires Blamed On Mexican Drug Smugglers By Sheriff Larry Dever

Arizona Wildfires Larry Dever

PALOMINAS, Ariz -- Two Arizona wildfires that have scorched a quarter-million acres combined and destroyed dozens of homes just north of the U.S.-Mexico border were probably started by Mexican smugglers, the Cochise County sheriff said on Tuesday.

The remarks by Sheriff Larry Dever are likely to add to the furor sparked by Arizona Senator John McCain when he suggested that undocumented immigrants were to blame for some of the massive wildfires raging out of control in the state.

The latest of those, the so-called Monument Fire, erupted a week ago at the Coronado National Memorial and spread quickly into the adjacent national forest. It roared through the steep slopes and rugged canyons of the Huachuca Mountains before breaking out into ranch lands and populated areas over the weekend.

A separate blaze in southeastern Arizona known as the Horseshoe 2 Fire has blackened some 223,000 acres and destroyed or damaged nine dwellings since it began May 8, though it is now listed as 90 percent contained.

Cochise Sheriff Dever told reporters the Monument Fire was "man-caused" and started in an area near the border fence that is closed to visitors and known to law enforcement for "high-intensity, drug- and human-trafficking."

"It wasn't the rabbits or the rattle snakes that started this fire, it was human beings, and the only human beings believed to be occupying (the area) were smugglers," he said during a news conference.

Dever said traffickers intentionally light fires to use as signals, to keep themselves warm and as diversions "to keep ... law enforcement off their backs." He added that the Horseshoe 2 Fire was likely sparked in the same way.

Federal officials stressed, however, that origins of the Monument and Horseshoe 2 fires remains under investigation.

Any statements at this point about a cause "would be speculation," said John Morlock, acting National Park Service administrator for the Monument Fire.

He told Reuters that while the grounds of the Coronado Memorial where the Monument Fire began were closed to the public due to extreme fire danger at the time, a road that runs through that 4,700-acre park was open to traffic.

Dever's statements appeared to give credence to statements McCain made on Saturday citing "substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally."

The Arizona Republican and former presidential candidate made that comment at a news conference after paying a visit to the site of a third, larger blaze farther north in Arizona, the Wallow Fire in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

Some critics have accused McCain of trying to single out undocumented immigrants as scapegoats before the cause of the fires had been officially determined.

But Dever told Reuters, "I wouldn't take issue with the senator at all. In fact, I would support absolutely what he is suggesting."

The Monument fire has gutted at least 62 homes and a number of businesses, and an estimated 11,000 people were forced to flee at the peak of the fire threat in an area southeast of the town of Sierra Vista, Arizona. About 27,000 acres have burned in all.

Diminished winds since Monday have helped firefighters make headway against the flames, and by Tuesday ground crews had managed to carve containment lines around 40 percent of the fire's perimeter. But much of the Monument Fire continues to burn in remote terrain inaccessible to ground crews.

Federal fire authorities have said they suspect that an unattended campfire touched off the Wallow Fire, which has burned over 800 square miles and ranks as the largest ever in Arizona. Two "persons of interest" have been questioned by investigators, but they have not been identified, and no charges have been filed.

In response to McCain's remarks, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman was quoted by ABC News as saying there was no evidence to suggest undocumented immigrants were to blame,

McCain has stood by his statement, saying he was speaking generally about "some" of the Arizona fires, not the Wallow Fire specifically.

On Monday, McCain, fellow Arizona Senator Jon Kyl and two Arizona congressmen, U.S. Representatives Jeff Flake and Paul Gosar, issued a joint statement saying that a Forest Service official who briefed them during their Wallow Fire visit told them that "some wildfires in Arizona are regrettably caused by drug smugglers and illegal immigrants."

Hasn't the SCOTUS upheld Legal Arizona Workers Act of 2007?

Each & Every Arizona employer is mandated to use E-Verify

That means it's illegal for Arizona's Farmers to hire illegals ~ doing so, they would face Federal Felony charges with prison time, up to a $10,000 fine, or both

A little hard to run a farm from a Federal Prison Cell

Arizona's SB 1070 and Arizona's Legal Workers Act of 2007, help keep Arizona's Farmers out of jail

Before the Repug'ican primary campaign ends, mark my words, one of the Repug candidates will blame the fires or their spread on President Obama.

oh you mean like the Democrats blamed Bush for Katrina? Same nonsense different president. Neither one of them can be blamed for such things. Both Republicans and Democrats need to pull their heads out.

Bush wasn't blamed for Katrina, an act of nature. He was blamed for the poor and delayed manner in which he and his team responded to the disaster. His FEMA director had no business being in charge of such a vital agency since Brown had not one day of experience handling emergencies at any level before being appointed head of FEMA. Dems weren't the only ones who blamed Bush for his poor response. It was pretty widespread and non-partisan as I recall.

Bush got a lot of power while in office but he couldn't cause hurricanes. McCain, sheriff Deaver, Kyl, Rep Flake, forest service officers said the illeglas caused some the fires. These facts have been documented back to 2006 in AZ, and now again this year. obama will be blamed for causing the biggest rise of inflation and unemployment, the worst economy sincethe 1930's, plus thousands of useless deaths of service members in his useless wars. Since obma hasn't got the guts to step one foot in A he can't be blamed for the fires, he only sues us which is a disgrace for any president.

What John McCain said was common sense. If it doesn't make sense to you, then probably you don't live around here. It wasn't intended to inflame anybody, although it seems to have inflamed you.

Illegal aliens have caused wildfires before, and they will cause them again. Once or twice they have been intentional to cause a diversion, but normally they are for warmth or as a signal. And yes, it does get cold at night in the desert, even in June. The big difference in this case is the Monument fire got big enough to be a national story.

Anybody camping that close to the border was illegal or involved in the smuggling trade. It has become too dangerous for normal campers in many areas near the border. That campfire did not belong to family campers or the Boy Scouts.

There are currently 6 active fires in Arizona. Why didn't McCain blame all of them on illegals? Because he has some common sense and only one of them started in an area with a serious illegal alien problem and hardly any other people present.

Let me make a statement that is just as inflammatory and commonsense as McCain's. It's going to be hot tomorrow.

Let the global warming rant begin.

Some correlate the forest fires with global warming, but they are more likely linked to ‘green rain’ or rain containing fertilizer. During wet weather this causes grasses and brush to grow, which during dry weather become a large source of kindle wood causing not only hard to control forest and range fires, but also fires that are so hot that large trees start burning, resulting in the loss of roots and causing mudslides or land erosion. Reactive nitrogen is formed during lightning storms and comes from many other sources, among them the burning of fossil fuel, the huge increased use of synthesized fertilizer in the agriculture, from manure and composting. Human nitrogenous (urine and protein) waste also contributes, as this waste, according the EPA, is not considered a pollutant under the Clean Water Act and therefore is not required to be treated. This waste, besides exerting an oxygen demand (just like fecal waste) also is a fertilizer for algae, thus contributes to eutrophication often resulting in dead zones. (www.petermaier.net)
The reason this waste is not treated is caused by a faulty applied water pollution test EPA used to implement the Clean Water Act and by not admitting this mistake was made, this test not only caused the failure of this second largest federally funded public works program, but now is also the reason that the impact of reactive nitrogen on the earth biosphere is ignored in other environmental policies.

The illegals benefit if the entire fire depts, police force and sometimes the national guard are busy saving lives, home, animals and electical lines so you easterners can get electricity from the wild west. Some illegals are just dumb and can't read a sign saying no campfires,no fires, no smoking. Gotta get them to learn english, maybe obama can send some dem teachers or a c l u down to mex to teach them the no smoiking signs etc.

In the wake of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force incident in Boston, Tom Menino joked at the subsequent St. Patrick's Day Breakfast that it was really a way to get the city an aid package.  As long as we're on the subject of fielding operatically over-the-top hyperbolic blame for this, perhaps Jan Brewer took that joke literally.

McCain and Dever want to turn these fires into political hay. The investigation is not finished for the monument fire but there is some evidence that it started on the MEXICAN side of the border.

But facts never get in the way of a good harrangue....especially if you can gain from the lie.

Of course it MUST have been John Mc Cain and Jan Brewer riding their jeeps down across one of the worst deserts in the area IN OVER 105 DEGREE HEAT and those two rascals setting the fires while singing cum by ya. I'll bet that what started the Monument fire. There libb s are you happy now, you can blame john and jan,

According to the evidence it does sound plausible that the fire was caused by drug smugglers. What is wrong with saying that? These guys don't exactly have any reasonable ethics of any sort and wouldn't be above this sort of behavior if it furthered their cause.

The firemen fight fires, the police forces have to save people's lives, protect property, , direct evacuations leaving little time to hunt for illegals. The diversions make it perfect scenarios for the illeglas, they sneak in, go north without being stopped, and before we know it they are in your hometown so they can steal your job.
