Darrell Issa, ATF Fast And Furious Critic, Briefed On Gun Trafficking Program, Raised No Objections

Darrell Issa Atf Kenneth Melson Guns

Following criticism from Republicans over a controversial gun-trafficking program, Kenneth Melson, the acting chief of the ATF, is facing pressure to resign. But it turns out that Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the head of the House Oversight Committee and one of Melson's chief critics, was briefed about Operation Fast and Furious last year and did not express any opposition to it at the time.

The Washington Post reports:

At the briefing last year, bureau officials laid out for Issa and other members of Congress from both parties details of several ATF investigations, including Fast and Furious, the sources said. For that program, the briefing covered how many guns had been bought by “straw purchasers,’’ the types of guns and how much money had been spent, said one source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the briefing was not public. “All of the things [Issa] has been screaming about, he was briefed on,’’ said one source familiar with the session.

The ATF program was designed to monitor the illegal sale and transfer of guns from the U.S. to Mexican drug cartels. At a House Oversight Committee hearing last week, ATF agents told lawmakers that instead of arresting the small-time buyers, they were instructed to stand by and watch to see where the guns went in an effort to build a case against bigger arms dealers.

Doing so, however, meant that U.S. guns wound up in the hands of the Mexican drug cartels. And after Border Patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered in a shootout along the Arizona-Mexico border in December, two weapons found on the scene were linked that the “Fast and Furious†program.

The committee released emails last week detailing Melson's involvement in the program, and Issa called on the acting director to resign in an interview with Fox News.

“He was part of the bad judgment. And when I say bad judgment, it wasn’t just him,†Issa said. “They had to go to Justice to get money, to get FBI agents, all of the other people that helped coordinate this, and to get the wiretaps they used. This was a program so stupid from the start.â€

Attorney General Eric Holder met on Tuesday with Andrew Traver, President Obama’s choice to head the bureau whose nomination is currently stalled in the Senate, fueling speculation that Melson would soon be out. But Melson has not indicated any plans to resign, sources told the Washington Post.

According the the Daily Caller, even if Melson resigns, the Oversight Committee is looking to hold a much higher appointee accountable for the Fast and Furious program as well.

“The investigations are far from over,†Issa spokesman Frederick Hill told the Daily Caller. “It’s quite certain that Kenneth Melson was not the principal architect of this plan nor was he the only high-ranking official who knew about and authorized this operation.â€

Yes, the operation was definitely a bad idea.  Who wants to give guns to the drug cartels?  Better to sell them guns designed not to fire or arrange for them to purchase high caliber weapons and then arrest them.  The violence on the border is out of control.   In fact, although Issa is conducting most of his investigations for partisan political reasons, the idea behind this one  Read More...

It looks like the target of the investigation is actually expanding to include AG Holder and later, possibly the President. Over the weekend, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson participated in a transcribed interview regarding Operation Fast and Furious and related ma t t e r s with both Republican and Democratic staff. He appeared with his personal counsel, Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods LLP. His interview had originally be en scheduled through the Justice Department to occur on July 13 in the presence of DOJ and ATF counsel. It would seem that Mr Holder failed to explain to Director Melson he had the right to voluntarily appear with private counsel, rather than participate with counsel representing the Department's interests.
In short, this is probably going to morph into something much larger and include more than the Director of ATF. Direct testimony given by Director Melson indicates direct knowledge of operations by the DOJ.

There is so much censorship at this paper.

Melson is obviously afraid of them and he talked to both democrats and republicans. I believe that holder was in on this stupid scheme. It was to big of an operation to exist under the radar. It is an attempt at covering it up.

So- you go to print with a story that quotes an anyonomous source that says Issa was briefed on the Fast and Furious operation even though the head of the ATF and the Department of Justice were not. Talk about cockroaches scurrying when the light is turned on. The fact that they tell you they are 'public servants' is laughable. Self serving, criminal opportunists might be a better description.

Oh no......Melson doesn't want to play nice and willingly fall on his sword it seems. I was wondering what was taking so long for this resignation that we heard about over a week ago, but as this story remains buried on HuffPost (requiring you to do a search for it) and off the MSM refuse to cover, it I am just now finding out.

And I am sure as the DOJ wants to fully cooperate with the investigation, the DOJ will do everything in their power to expedite's Issa's (and Melson's) request for Melson to testify before the committee.......like they did with the subpeonaed doc and the testimony Holder and Wallace gave when they testified before the committee,

Below I listed the three step process this Administration uses in dealing with anyone that goes off-script. It will be interesting to see how long before that process is rolled out to deal with Melson.

A good start would be to abolish and prosecute the ATF.

Issa is no better than an outlaw. How can someone with his criminal past rise to power? Hope he twitters his junk so we can be rid of him.

39 years ago Issa was charged with possession of a concealed weapon, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of possession of an unregistered firearm. Another charge alleging car theft, was never prosecuted.

Its bad enough that 30,000 Americans are killed by gun use yearly, gun proliferation needs oversight. gun apologists want to eliminate any oversight. The ATF can be fixed if the NRA stops messing with it.
09:54 AM on 06/24/2011
Of course... let's be realistic here... well over half of all gun deaths in the US each year are from suicide.
10:43 PM on 07/07/2011
Nice try at spinning the topic but this is the ATF not the NRA.

Reading this several times and noticed one thing missing(same on WAPO site) says how many straw, costs, types but doesn't mention the most important part the allow the "gun walking" across the border and given to the cartel. Another thing is this should be news in all the major news outlets by now but it isn't. Something is squirrelly with this story.

For that program, the briefing covered how many guns had been bought by “straw purchasers,’’ the types of guns and how much money had been spent, said one source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the briefing was not public.

The problem is gun proliferation. Guns are manufactured, they don't grow on trees.

You keep posting the same ol' mantra, but, as guns "proliferated" here in the United States over the past few years, the violent crime and murder rates have gone down. So, what seems to be the problem?
