IPhone 5 Rumors: Next Phone To Be Faster, Released In September

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/22/11 10:22 AM ET Updated: 08/22/11 06:12 AM ET

Is Apple readying a faster, more powerful iPhone for the fall?

That's the gist of a new rumor from Bloomberg, which suggests that the next iPhone will debut in September and will have an A5 processor and an 8-megapixel camera. Additionally, the site's sources say that Apple is also testing an iPad with a higher resolution screen that is also more responsive.

An A5 chip will let the phone operate more speedily, and make it more attractive to developers looking to create more powerful games. The report of the new processor is consistent with previous rumors regarding the phone.

A new camera would also be in line with earlier speculation about the next generation phone. The iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel screen right now. The new iPhone is also expected to run iOS 5, the new mobile operating system that was previewed at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference. Bloomberg's sources say that as Apple continues to update its mobile operating system, it may stop offering support for older generation phones like the iPhone 3G to run all iOS apps.

Contrary to rumors that suggest the iPhone 5 could have a majorly different design from its predecessors, Bloomberg's sources say that the new iPhone will look much like the iPhone 4. Other reports have indicated that a radical redesign of the iPhone won't be coming until spring 2012. Bloomberg notes that a cheaper iPhone for developing countries is also in the works, which would be smaller than the current versions.

Verizon's CFO has also said that Apple's next iPhone will be a world phone, using a new chip that supports both GSM and CDMA networks. Additionally, Apple recently began selling unlocked iPhones.

According to a new report by Needham & Co, Apple gained share in the smartphone market at Android's expense last quarter, and now holds 29.5 percent compared to Android's 49.5 percent. The analyst also said that the iPhone 5's launch had been delayed on purpose to avoid aggravating Verizon iPhone customers, and that the launch of the new model will result in a major uptick of iPhone buyers--to the detriment of Android.

I love Apple, but they killed me with Final Cut Pro X (aka iMovie Pro). I can't defend them much now because if they screwed their editors that way, I don't trust them anymore. I'll still buy Apple, but I don't care if Android beats them or not anymore since they don't care about trashing editors.

I am sick of Apple releasing new units that are "upgrades" every 10 mos. Now they are threatening to stop "supporting" the 3 G. Really? Each "NEW' development is just another "feature" they held back form the previous release..like a camera..whooo. Now if they made it so it was actually a good telephone and didn't drop calls all the time..now THAT would be an innovation. Great toys, crappy phones!

Any problems with iPhones making calls is the fault of the carrier. I know this because my wife and I as well as my brother, my boss and two of my cousins own an iPhone 4 and have never had a problem making calls except in areas that no phones get AT&T coverage which is in the booniest of boonies in my state.

The iPhone 4 has a camera and is one of the best cameras to ever be on a mobile phone and certainly was the best at the time of release... I don't know enough about current gen mobile cameras to compare.

We don't know what is going to be in the next iPhone but the camera isn't a new addition it is an upgrade.

The 3G is a 3 year old phone. If you think a 3 year old Android phone is going to get updates you're delusional. Some current gen ANdroid devices take six months or more if they ever get updates. The huge seller Evo 4G took 6 months after Gingerbread was released to get it.

I will definitely be getting the next iPhone whatever it is. My 3G is 3 years old and can't take new OS' anymore. It has served me very well though. If the new iPhone is remotely like my iPad 2 in terms of perfomance, I will be a very happy camper indeed. (nn)

Look all Steve Jobs has to do is hold a news conference and announce that Apple has developed a new and better anything, I mean anything tech and all of america will swallow it hook, line and sinker. He is not going after the masses, we barely live from week to week,he is going after the six figures people. That's the way it has been from the begining, the rest of us will settle for AT&T, Verizon and Sprint or try to keep up buying a 500 i-phone or i-pad or i this or that because of course if it costs more it must be better and we must keep up. It's just not cool to have last years phone.

Look around, Leroy. People from all walks of life are using iPhones. Students, cab drivers, hair stylists, etc. There's nothing exclusive about it. Your rant is misdirected.

You mean like the way people lined up around the block for The Cube and Apple TV?

I heard people would also be able to use it as a taser to defend themselves if being assaulted in the street. I also heard lonely women could use the new Iphone as a vibrator. But it's only rumors...

I'm definitely looking forward to the new release. I actually am more excited about iOS5 than the next iPhone, but obviously they will be coming more or less together, so it's a package deal.

My 3Gs has been a fantastic phone. But the display alone on the iPhone4 makes it worth the upgrade. Anything else is, frankly, just gravy to me.

Give me that better display and iOS5 and I'll be psyched. Plus, my contract will be running out right about the time that the next iPhone will be released.

The iPhone 4 is fine as it is. "FORWARD HE CRIED FROM THE REAR, AND THE FRONT RANK DIED!" Damn thing has more processing power as is than the first Space Shuttle.

Is any website willing to NOT POST anything about the next iPhone until they have solid proof, something for Apple themselves. There seems like there is at least 1 article a week and they are left with question marks.

I will not own a cell phone (or whatever name you want to call the electronic toy). All of my phone conversations can wait till I get home. One phone in my life is enough. I refuse to pay $50 + a month so I can talk to people while I am away from home. I refuse to pay companies like Verizon even more money for that unimportant convenience. A cell phone just makes it easier for people to get ahold of me. I pay Verizon enough for this computer, TV and home phone. I don't need any more toys...I don't want any more toys. - gregg in Sarasota,FL

You're a little low there. People pay 140 bucks a month for a full feature Andriod or iphone. And that's about the median - you can get to 180 with a single phone if you max out talk minutes messaging and internet surfing gigs.

Mobilicity, unlimited talk text & data plan 45 bucks. Just an FYI. Although yes, if you want an iPhone you'll either have to jailbreak it thereby voiding the warranty to get on any network that won't charge you the aforementioned figures at least in Canada.

Get out the aluminum and make a tin foil hat. Otherwise the phone network guys will read your thoughts and do bad things to you when they find you for being such a rebel.....

The earlier poster was only saying that having a cell phone would make it easier for people to get hold of him. He didn't sound any more paranoid than a normal person to me.
09:07 PM on 06/22/2011
It depends on how better it is compare to iPhone 4. I can not get to excited because I am still stuck in a contract with Rogers. If it is a major upgrade I will pay the extra cash to get it, but I doubt it.

When Verizon got the iPhone, I was ready to jump and ditch my much hated BlackBerry. But my cousin said ...just wait, iPhone 5 will be announced soon. So I am still waiting and hoping that Verizon gets it too....SOON! I am ready for my grandson to run over my BlackBerry with his ride on vehicle and smash it to bits!
