KLM Biofuel Flights: Dutch Airline To Use Recycled Cooking Oil To Power Planes

Klm Biofuel Flights Airplane

AMSTERDAM -- Dutch airline KLM plans to use recycled cooking oil as biofuel to power flights to and from France in a move aimed at cutting carbon emissions.

Starting in September, KLM will begin more than 200 flights between Paris and Amsterdam using biofuel made from used cooking oil, the company said Wednesday.

KLM managing director Camiel Eurlings said in a statement the airline does not have to make any changes to its aircraft engines to use the new biofuel. The biofuel flights are intended to help reduce KLM's carbon emissions while having a "minimum negative impact on biodiversity and food supply."

Air travel is responsible for about 3 percent of greenhouse gases, but their share of global emissions is rising rapidly.

The European Union told airlines earlier this year they would have to cut their carbon emissions by three percent on flights to the continent in 2012 to fall within new pollution limits.

The limit is designed to encourage airlines to reduce greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming by switching to cleaner fuels or economizing on fuel consumption with lighter aircraft or more efficient flight patterns.

Eurlings said he expects authorization to be granted soon for KLM's flights using the new fuel.

An Air France-KLM Boeing 747 using a 50 percent biofuel mix in one engine successfully completed a demonstration flight in the Netherlands in November 2009.

Forty people flew on the 90-minute trip, including the Dutch economic affairs minister, and the airlines said it was the first flight using biofuel to carry passengers. The plane had a 50-50 mix of biofuel and regular jet fuel in one of its four engines.

Virgin, Air New Zealand, Air Japan and Continental Airlines have previously completed similar demonstration flights using biofuel mixes.

I live in Oakland, CA. I drive a Mercedes Diesel that I run almost entirely on bio-diesel made locally from used fryer oil from a potato chip factory. It's wonderful!! My car runs better, cleaner, and gets better mileage and acceleration on it. I can mix petro-diesel with it in any amounts as needed. It's the best move I've ever made.
When I went to buy another car, I couldn't accept using petroleum. It's up to US to make the difference. Any increase in this will help us, ultimately.
And...I drive a (used) Mercedes - not a bad deal all-in-all. Oh...and I buy it from a local, small, women-owned co-op.

It sounds good now, but we won't be so happy when an airplane has to make an emergency landing because of a french fry stuck in the fuel line.

This is not just used fryer oil - although engines can run on that. This is a refined fuel made FROM the oil. It is actually a diesel fuel and it has no such smell. But it DOES turn a dangerous waste from industry into a green and useable fuel - and is NOT petroleum.

This is a great idea...the exhaust will smell so much better, and the fuel is not produced in the Middle East.

Silly me. I thought I was going to be reading about an AMERICAN airline when I clicked the link...

Seriously though, anyone know what kind of cost savings (if any) are attached to this?

Micro-bio? We don't need no stinkin' micro-bio!

It all depends on the supplier. My girlfriend and I have been thinking about getting a small scale bio-diesel economy going in New Orleans because they have so much cooking oil that even the small bars & cafes have to pay a lot to dispose of where we could take it from them for free, filter it and use it to power our own vehicles. We want to get a group of 30-40 people active with this and a list of "friendly fryers" to not only get free fuel but help the local chefs save money too! Seems like a win win idea to me... In the case of powering a commercial jet? They are probably buying the oil from a middle-man who brokers deals with recycling centers and whatnot. If they worked out their deal directly, they'd probably save a LOT of money on fuel however it all comes down to the broker's fees and cuts.

This is only a baby step. It actually borders on greenwashing. Here's why. The jet engine will not be burning pure vegetable oil. It will be a mixture of veg oil and kerosene. There are inherent problems with this kind of biofuel for an airline or even ground transportation. It likes water more than its petroleum counterpart. That makes it potentially more corrosive to the fuel tanks and fuel lines and all the seals. Hence, the inclusion of kerosene. New design with new materials may yield aircraft that can run safely on higher biofuel content.

Air force is already working and spending a lot of money on Algea Biodiesel. the military can produce its own fuel and it would be huge cost saving for them.

Biodiesel is far cheaper than Middle Eastern wars without end. This should be our national priority, not supporting fossil fuels.

of course you'd need a lot of cooking oil. i wonder if there is enough and what if there isn't ? it's foodstuff that has to be grown.

Too bad the US allows our corporations to bully us around. They would rather spend hundreds of millions on lobbyist to keep things the same instead of trying to create a better world. Third World Nation status, here we come!

Recycling in a Dutch way! Amazingly simple solution to fuel prices. I buy biofuel in Eugene, Oregon where I save 20 cents per gallon using it... runs very smooth and NO ODOR.
