Methodist Pastor Found Guilty Of Marrying Gays

Amy Delong Gay Marriage

DINESH RAMDE   06/22/11 09:11 PM ET   AP

MILWAUKEE — Methodist pastors who have defied a church ban on marrying gays were dealt a setback Wednesday when clergy members hearing a church trial found a colleague guilty of marrying a lesbian couple in 2009.

The 13-person jury of clergy members unanimously convicted the Rev. Amy DeLong of Osceola. They found the 44-year-old not guilty of a second charge of being a "self-avowed practicing homosexual." That vote was 12-1.

After the verdicts were announced, church officials heard a second round of testimony to help jurors recommend a penalty that could range from suspension to defrocking. Their decision was expected to be announced Thursday morning.

The Rev. Tom Lambrecht, the Greenville pastor who conducted the prosecution, called the conviction "a just verdict."

"Speaking personally and not as counsel for the church, I think the Scripture is clear on how we're called to exercise the gift of human sexuality," he said. "The church is quite consistent that we exercise that gift in the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman."

Efforts to reach DeLong by phone were not immediately successful.

"I'm sure it was very difficult for the jury to deliberate on both charges," said the Rev. Bruce Robbins, a DeLong supporter. "I'm not surprised, though. I've been listening to the jury instructions and I'm not sure how the jury could have come to a different conclusion."

Robbins, of the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, is one of several Methodist leaders across the country encouraging his colleagues to disobey the church ban on marrying gays. The efforts have gained momentum, as hundreds of pastors from areas including Illinois, Minnesota, New York and New England signed statements in recent weeks asserting their willingness to defy the rule.

While other mainline Protestant denominations have become more accepting of openly gay leaders, the Methodist church has been reluctant to join them. Its rulebook, called the Book of Discipline, forbids clergy to officiate at same-sex marriages, under penalty of discipline or dismissal from the church.

The chances of reversing the rule are far from certain. Rule changes must be approved by delegates at the church's General Conference, held every four years. Because a growing number of delegates come from Africa, the Philippines and other theologically conservative regions, voting patterns reflect strong resistance to change.

DeLong said she told her supervisors years ago that she was in a lesbian relationship and felt comforted by the support and caring she received in response. She admitted later marrying the lesbian couple and said she was speaking out because she could no longer protect the church's policy.

DeLong's acquittal on the charge of being a self-avowed practicing homosexual appeared to be based on the fact that she declined to answer in court whether her relationship involved sexual contact, Lambrecht said.

"The charge is based on a person avowing for themselves," he said. "When she refused to do that, that ended it."

DeLong can appeal if she believes the penalty handed down for her conviction on the charge of marrying a gay couple is too harsh.

The church cannot appeal if it thinks the penalty is too light, although it can appeal if it feels a flaw in the trial influenced the outcome. Lambrecht declined to say whether he saw anything in the trial that might merit an appeal.

Mark Tooley, president of The Institute on Religion and Democracy, an advocacy group for conservative mainline Protestants, said a lenient penalty will anger traditionalists, while a harsh penalty will mobilize more liberal members. Either way, Tooley predicted the impact of DeLong's case would resonate far outside Wisconsin, he said.

"I think what's happening in the United Methodist Church is that more and more people on either side of the issue are becoming unable to live with the status quo," he said. "The fact that we're talking about a wide range of responses (to DeLong's conviction) shows the struggle of the church having to live with its diversity of opinion."

When will these antiquated beliefs finally be realized as the myths and allegories they truly are? There IS one thing that we could learn from many of the religions out there. Love your neighbor. It's unfortunate that through out the years this has been watered down to Love your neighbor, as long as they believe the same beliefs as you. If their beliefs conflict with yours, shoot straight and dominate. God bless.

Is it possible to disagree with religious beliefs while not disparaging the believers or their right to practice as they see fit? Religious freedom is a fantastic thing. Much in the same way free speach is. The real problem is that religious zealots who are extreme think they have to make the world over in their religious images. Believe what you like. Practice what you like... and leave the rest of us out of it. And let's stop feeling the need to to condemn those who believe what they do. And most importantly let's keep religion separate from science and politicies.
Q: Why can't religious people be more like the Amish folks. They believe what they believe and do what they do without imposing themselves on the rest of us. They don't have large PACS to force the rest of the country to bend to their way of thinking or practicing and they don't kell people who aren't like them.

Marriage is between one man and one woman. Anything else is marriage in name only. DeLong is an apostate, and she should be defrocked for being a practicing homosexual, disobeying the rules and the church, and most importantly, for denying the Word of God.

Homosexuals are no less children of God than anyone else, and are equally subject to salvation.

I heart religious in-fighting. And it gets better the closer the delusional beliefs of the fighters are.

"Church officials replied that their longstanding rules were clear." This last line says it all. She knew what she was getting into. She should not be playing the victim. If she want to be keep doing what she is doing, then she has the freedom to start her own congregation somewhere else.

There are two issues in reference to this story that must be addressed.

1) Scripture teaches that women are not allowed to pastor.

"The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church." 1 Corinthians 14:35-36

2) Ms. Delong is a professed homosexual. Her sexual conduct is clearly in violation of Scripture, therefore, she is no position to lead anyone in matters of Christian living for she is dead in her sin and separate from GOD, whom she thinks she is teaching people about.

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

As for her clergy supporters, they too are in grave error with what Scripture teaches and are themselves in danger of the judgment of GOD.

Over the last two thousand years different christian faiths have reworded the "original" bible to cater to their own agendas. Many chapters of the bible were written hundreds of years after the original narators died. Don't recite quotes as if they are fact so ignorant people can bread hate with your hate. God wants us to be pure and live in his love. Unfortunately, MAN wants death and hate. Also, God did not create man to have a woman as his slave. God created everyone equally.

You spread hate and ignorance as if it is God's word. Jesus only wants you to spread light and the good word. You pretend to be spreading his word but you are damning two groups of people- women and homosexuals. I hope God can forgive your misguided ways when your time comes. Keep your hate to yourself.

Stop casting stones. Your Corinthians verse in your second point calls out a lot of sins. As Christians we are born with sin, we will sin, but we have to struggle to be on the right path daily and not sin. Some of those "sins" in the verse were created by man. Homosexuals are not sinners. Woman who can't have babies are not sinners. Both of those groups deserve to love and be married. You know what is a sin- judging others. That has lead man throughout history through more wars and senseless deaths of millions. What are we fighting for? You think God wants war?

Maybe what your "Scripture" needs is someone to come in and rip it to pieces. I am not advocating for violence, but seriously? It is improper for a women to speak in church? Who the hell is so stupid and ignorant to believe that, much less write that and pretend its the word of an all mighty being living high in the sky? And so what if she is a "professed homosexual"? You make it sound like its a horrible thing, that she should be burned at the stake for it. Well, here's a little advice for you. Get over yourself! Start accepting other people for who they are, and not denying them the privileges of doing what they want to do. Now, I don't see why anyone would want to be a pastor, but if she does, good for her. Let her do something that she wants to do, and stop living in the past.

Your opinion, of course. I see it differently. As a Methodist I (as well as my clergy Methodist spouse) are also working from within the denomation in Breaking the Silence to bring needed change to our denomination.

And those that won't change will be forced to start another denomination? A separation or split seems unavoidable.
