Hundreds Of Mormon Ads Launched In New York City

Mormon Ads

With two Mormons vying for the Republican presidential nomination and a hit musical about Mormon missionaries playing on Broadway, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has launched a million-dollar advertising blitz in New York City, complete with two 40-foot billboards in Times Square.

The "I'm a Mormon" campaign, which showcases video and print portraits of young, diverse and energetic Mormons -- and steers clear of images of missionaries in white shirts and black pants or talk of theology -- includes hundreds of ads on top of taxis, in subway stations and at bus shelters around the city. The campaign tested in nine markets last summer and it is going to expand to two dozen this fall.

"There's a national conversation going on about Mormonism and we want to be a part of it," said Michael Purdy, a spokesman for the 14-million member church, which is growing at a rate of of about 333,000 members per year, according its own statistics.

The ads direct viewers to www.mormon.org, where they can specify age, gender and ethnic demographics or type key words to "discover Mormons who share your personal experience" from a database of 30,000 church members. Those members range from Sheryl Garner, a Haitian-American elementary school teacher who converted to Mormonism when she was 10, to David Baker, a church-loving gay San Franciscan in his 20s who works at Google and says his sexual orientation leaves him in a "precarious position" since the faith prohibits sex between two men.

The church has run ad campaigns before, but they were largely focused on clarifying church beliefs, not promoting everyday members. The latest online videos stress a "faith in Jesus Christ," but they do not get into theological details.

"Our research showed us that many people know very little, if anything, about members of the church," Purdy said. "By giving people a glimpse into the both ordinary and extraordinary aspects of the lives of our members, we hope they'll realize these are people with whom they have a lot in common."

Mormonism is receiving heightened media attention thanks to former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, who announced his bid for the presidency on Tuesday, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a front-runner among Republican 2012 candidates. But the ads also come as the church has come under fire for its efforts opposing same-sex marriage in California and amid controversies surrounding fundamentalist Mormons in Utah.

A Pew Research Center survey released in June found that one in four respondents were less likely to support a presidential candidate who is a Mormon. During the last presidential election, in which Romney also ran, a Pew survey found that when asked to give a single-word to describe Mormonism, three of the top four words respondents gave were negative. "Polygamy" was No. 1, "cult" was No. 2 and "different" was No. 4. The No. 3 response was "family."

"[The ad campaign] looks designed to re-frame some of the possible stereotypes that people have about Mormons," said A. Larry Ross, a public relations veteran who represents dozens of churches and religious figures, including the Rev. Billy Graham. "From a communications perspective, it's very intelligent to go from a rather parochial message to one that focuses on people."

"But, putting my faith hat on, the campaign videos make the point that Mormons believe in Jesus Christ without addressing fundamental doctrinal differences that cannot be defined as parallel or complimentary to mainstream Christianity," said Ross, who identifies as an evangelical Christian.

The Mormon ads follow efforts by other minority religious groups, including Scientologists and Muslims, that have also launched ad campaigns in recent years.

"Religious institutions are becoming smarter in terms of their marketing and branding and are not just using it to drive people to the pews, but using it to manage reputations," said Mara Einstein, an Associate Professor of Media Studies at City University of New York Queens College and author of "Brands of Faith: Marketing Religion in a Commercial Age." "Here, [Mormons] are really trying to drive home the point that they are Christians and are 'one of you.'"

The effort may be working.

Walking through Times Square this week, Rachel Hanson, 20, who was in New York on vacation from South Dakota, came to a pause as she saw one of the billboards that showed an Asian woman surfing, a rock climber with a prosthetic limb and a black man singing in a recording studio.

"You don't usually see this," Hanson said of images of Mormonism. "We see the guys in the black pants and white shirts sometimes around the neighborhood, but haven't really thought much about them. I'd check out the site."

"It's kind of neat," said Dowd Timmerman, 35, of Augusta, Ga., who was staying at a nearby hotel and said the ad was one of the first he noticed in the crowded square. "I guess anybody can be a Mormon."

We live in a neighborhood that is heavily Mormon. When my daughter was about eight she said that she wanted to be a Mormon. When I asked why she said that it was so the other kids in the neighborhood would be allowed to play with her. The Mormons' claims of inclusiveness fall on deaf ears with me.
04:52 PM on 06/25/2011
I'm very sorry to hear that. We live in a fairly Mormon community, but I (and my children) have many, many friends who are of different faiths. In my experience growing up, I never heard of parents "not allowing" Mormon kids to play with other kids, so that is a very unfortunate experience. If the parents are saying such things they should be ashamed.

Quite a few non-Mormons living in Utah could offer up similar stories. I wouldn't expect it to be prevelant elsewhere, except maybe some parts of Idaho.

The Mormon Church pours millions into ads to draw people in. They also are systematic in their method of telling people about their religion. The missionary lessons' given to 'investigators' are designed to invoke 'yes' answers. leaving little room for people to question -- except for someone well versed in biblical studies. The higher the level one can receive 'yes' answers, or answers of agreement, the greater the odds are of conversion. Milk is given before meat... in other words the more questionable or conversational aspects of the Mormon faith are left by the wayside, until one is already emotionally drawn into the organization.
10:45 PM on 06/26/2011
No, the missionary lessons don't invoke 'yes' answers. I was a missionary for the Mormon church, and I got rejected hard-core all the time. Missionaries are not salesmen, they simply invite.

In fact, you can access the main manual the missionary lessons come from online. The manual also includes the training the missionaries go through. Here is a link to the PDF version of the entire manual:

The Mormon religion / cult isn’t Christian. I find them to be as scary as Muslim fanatics. Go live in Utah. Everything that Joseph Smith, the polygamist and money launderer, predicted never occurred. If Smith was around today, we would put him on medication and behind bars. The Book of Mormon, non sense, has had thousands of changes. The Mormon marketing department makes changes to save face. For example; Jesus came to America and preached to the Lost Tribe of Israel, Indians. DNA proved otherwise. Many of the Mormon temple acts are very similiar to the Masons; Joseph Smith was an ex Mason.
The Mormons declared that all other religions are false and that the Christian bible is in error.
The sole purpose of the media ad is to help their Mormon boys get elected president. If elected, the Mormon president first alligance will be to his church and to create economic opportunities for the church.
What's behind that Mormon false smile: do you know what state has the highest per capita suicide rate; what state has one of the highest per capita child abuse rates; what state has the highest per capita rate of taking anti depressants… Utah. The Mormon church hides from its members and non members crimes of child abuse committed by bishops.
If you want to hear the truth about Mormon’s Google Ex Mormons it will give you 1000’s of stories about the Mormon bull.

"The Mormon religion / cult isn’t Christian."

Which is its only redeeming feature.
03:09 PM on 06/25/2011
And Christianity is just a Jewish cult? So what? Superstition is superstition, regardless of origin.
02:02 PM on 06/24/2011
I see a lot of trolls. How about we decide to judge people based on the way they live and not their theological views? What makes one person's hokey-pokey beliefs better than another's? Oh wait, I forgot... Only YOU'RE beliefs are valid, so you might as well show off your intellect by bashing various religions on the internet.

Joseph Smith was a charlatan. The whole faith is based on Christ coming here to the new world and Joseph Smith being THE ONLY PERSON who was told this by "god".

I'll never forget the time when I was in college and I went into a used bookstore and found a book from around 1843 called Letters Home to Wales. It was letters by Welsh immigrants to America back to their families. This one guy said he had gotten to the 'fairgrounds' early on the day that Joseph Smith was coming to do a 'show' and he said he saw them setting up a plank underneath the water in a small pond where Joseph Smith was going to put on a demonstration of "walking on water." He waited for the show and said that part went over really well with the crowds.

Even the most well-known critic of Mormonism, Fawn Brodei, in her book "No Man Knows My History", recognized this story as fake.

Those are some good values, yes sir.

As a mormon, I could care less of being reminded of Mountain Meadows. Mormons are not and never will be perfect in this life. Thanks for the high regards though. That situation was terrible and unfortunate and was a dark moment in the history of the church. Understanding the mind-set of the Saints back then would help you understand the situation greater. Having charity and compassion for a people who have been persecuted and kicked around and suffered many afflictions would help too. Please look beyond the tip of your nose and research WHY this event occurred not just the event itself occurring.

Wounded Knee does not negate Mountain Meadows. Both were horrible and senseless tragedies as were the witch trials and the inquisition. But pointing to other’s bad deeds do not make the LDS’s bad deeds any better.

That was genetically proven by DNA testing, but, being Mormons, their eyes simply go blank when you point that out to them and they repeat, "That's just not true" over and over and over again. That's the way they deal with truth that goes against anything they're told to believe, and it is creepy. It does solidify "Cult Follower" firmly in the minds of anyone seeing it in action, though.

Yes, I found it amusing when Mormon missionaries came to visit me. At first I didn't mind and told them they were welcome back anytime. It was when they told me all Native Americans had Mormon roots that I said, "Really now? Funny, because I don't recall some of my relatives mentioning that little tidbit.". When I asked for sources that were not funded by Mormons, they couldn't offer me any. Also, I was asked to read a scripture about Jesus which I found to be inconsistent with Christianity's portrayal. Bottom line: Christianity and Islam are spin-offs of Judaism and Mormonism is a spin-off of Christianity. People choose to believe what they want. It's their choice and their right.
