Poll: 44 Percent Of Americans Say Economy Worse Under Obama

Obama Economy

More than four in ten Americans believe they are worse off economically than before President Obama took office, according to a Bloomberg National Poll published today, underscoring the degree to which a critical shortage of jobs has amplified the gloom hovering over the nation.

The poll, which surveyed Americans nationwide between June 17th and 20th, found that 44 percent of respondents view their economic prospects as even worse now than when Obama was inaugurated in early 2009, in the midst of the wrenching downturn known as the Great Recession, and only months after the collapse of major financial institutions. Only 34 percent of respondents disagreed with that proposition.

Public perceptions are of course fickle, laced with emotion and tainted by faulty memories, rendering dubious any relative assessment about different points in time. But the results amount to a sobering indication that the Obama administration confronts a deeply challenging political problem as it heads into next year's reelection campaign. Most of all, the poll underscores the degree to which the White House has failed to restore a sense of confidence to a beleaguered country.

According to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, fewer than one-third of Americans believe national fortunes are heading in the right direction -- a smaller slice than at any time during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, who saw unemployment soar to 10.8 percent, higher than it has ever been during the Obama presidency.

More broadly, deepening worries about the economy amount to an economic problem: Consumer spending comprises some 70 percent of American economic output. If ordinary people fear the economy will worsen or merely stagnate, they are likely to put off purchases, withholding their dollars from the economy. That makes employers even less likely to hire, cognizant that opportunities are slim. Such is the feedback loop that has assailed the economy for many months -- bad sentiments spawning bad news, reinforcing the bad sentiments, making households and businesses ever more reluctant to transact.

The unemployment rate remains high, reaching 9.1 percent last month, with Depression-era levels of joblessness affecting the African American community. Worst of all, the public is showing a profound lack of confidence that significant improvement lies ahead. Fewer than one in ten Americans thinks that the jobless rate will get below its pre-recession level of five percent in the next two years, according to the Bloomberg poll.

Given that 6.2 million people have been out of work for six months or longer, and given that millions more have stopped looking for employment, citing a lack of opportunities, the nation is likely to face increasingly uncomfortable strains. Jobless people are exhausting what savings remain, making retirement and adequate health care uncertain propositions, reinforcing the predilection to save and further limiting economic growth. The social safety net is under severe pressure, as millions of people rely upon food stamps and unemployment benefits as their only sustenance -- this, as Washington is consumed with debate over how to cut federal spending to diminish the budget deficit.

In part, the latest poll suggests that the Obama administration has done a poor job of public messaging, failing to convince the public that the $800 billion stimulus spending package unleashed early on has made a difference. Many economists argue that the spending has indeed prevented a chronically lean job market from getting even worse, but the administration has clouded that message with its rhetorical focus on cutting government spending. The public has absorbed the fact that the economy remains awful and has apparently pronounced the whole Obama economic policy a failure -- a hard thing to argue against in many communities, in which diminished expectations have insinuated themselves into every area of life.

Beyond the rhetoric, the poll offers the latest sign that the public is experiencing a different reality than the one parsed by elected officials in Washington. It will take more than well-articulated initiatives, targeted press releases, and spinning of data to dislodge the sense that the nation is in danger. It will take the one thing in most critically short supply: paychecks. How to make that happen is not a major talking point in Washington these days.

The president has stated he will not use the bully pulpit to promote Democratic causes and policies. He adopts a passive approach to problems. He has stated he has no problem with being a one term president. A deepening malaise is settling over the nation and the tipping point is rapidly approaching when the public decides to give up on the president and accept the consequences of someone new. 44% of Americans in the poll are the same ones who were foolish enough to elect a far-right, radical Tea Party Congress who had no intention whatsoever of dealing with the economy and jobs, but have not the slightest clue on how to do so. They've done NOTHING but pursue a culture war agenda since they got elected, and have wasted millions in taxpayer dollars doing so.

That 44% not only deserves the government they voted for last November--they richly deserve any and everything that government does to make their lives a living hell.

Americans have no one- NO ONE- to blame but themselves. It's Obama's fault, Bush's fault, the Republicans, Democrats, the rich, the immigrants, the bloody Chinese, the guy next door- no one stops to think that MAYBE, just MAYBE, it's their fault.

I was taught to fix yourself before you try and fix anyone else. Americans need to fix themselves before they have any hope of fixing their country- or depending on anyone else to.

I'm not an anti-Obama guy but I do think he made a big mistake in not going after China and their unethical economic policies. For example, they have artificially devalued thier currency 40% so as to enhance their manufacturing base. Policies such as these have, really, hurt US manufacturers and, in turn, cost millions of jobs. I know first hand as a plastic manufacturer. I have half the employees that I had 7 years ago. Any real leader, in my opinion, would not put up with China and their shenanigans. When will this country get a leader who makes a solid commitment to what has, fundamentally, made this country strong-manufacturing?

Well I agree with most of what you said. Except the president doesn't really have the ability to force China to change their monetary policy. I am anti-Obama. But to be honest he's not in that position.

Obama is in a position to make some headway in the manufacturing area. This is a huge area of economic loss for our country. In fact we just invent things here and have them manufactured in China for cheap labor. Often resulting in a lower quality product.

Simply put Obama completely ignored the economic problems for his first 2.5 years. He doesn't seem to have a game plan for creating the economic environment which would bring back manufacturing jobs here in the United States. Even if China continues to peg their currency to our own Americans can outdo them by manufacturing quality products. If you go to Europe and other places, the "Made in the U.S.A" term still holds value and has a solid reputation. We need to quit exporting our wealth to China. Unions don't accomplish this but certainly some trade regulation would be part of the plan.

What do you think the President should do to force China to play in our best interests?

Americans are by far the dumbest people on this planet. They think they can go into stores and auto dealerships and buy imported products and still have jobs inside the USA. What a bunch of freaking moron jerks they are. First they give their dollars away to foreign countries by buying foreign made products and then they complain there are no jobs. For instance, They buy Colgate and Ultra Brite toothpaste made in Mexico and complain there are no jobs here. Yet they are all too freaking dumb to know that they one and the only way to create jobs here is to buy products that are made here. Besides being dumb they are also too freaking lazy to look on packages to see where what they are thinking of buying is made.

Americans aren't going to want jobs making cheap t-shirts. Our economy is too advanced for that. If you want to move to Mexico and package toothpaste be my guest.

HA HA HA! Nothing is made here anymore! Haven't you heard amigo: the jobs have gone to China and India, and malaysia, indochina, vietnam, etc.

Look at the money that is sent to other countries. Money we can't afford considering how much we keep having to borrow to keep the government going.
Maybe even quit the UN. After all they expect us to pay the majority of the money yet the majority of them hate us. It is clear they don't know what they are doing. There is no telling how deep the corruption goes. Turn the building into a homeless shelter for all the unemployed families in the area, provide them with the skills to do a different type of job.(give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he will be able to feed hims self forever)
stream line industries regulations so business can build and advance, creating new jobs.
Accept the fact that the American Dream is not the great evil and quit punishing those who acquire it!
I could go on but hopefully you get my drift. It's a lovely dream only wish it could become reality

Yeah, uh, we created the UN out of the ashes of World War 2. We're not to quit that, ever. Next, what is the American Dream? Can you articulate it for me please? Just so I have a better understanding of what it is to be an American?

Is it to go out shopping every week and spend money? Buy a new car every three years? You use a parable of Jesus Christ to illustrate a jobs creation plan? There's no fishing when the pond's been drained!

Here's a simple suggestion . Put everything on hold. Send all the elected and appointed government employees from all three branches to a refresher course on the constitution. It has been rather clear that they have forgotten what the may have known.. Once everyone has passed US Constitution 101 and know what their responsibilities are then they can go back and work TOGETHER AS AMERICANS, rather than Dems, Libs, GOP, tea party, Italian-americans, Africian Americans, ?-Americans.......
Forget all that, JUST BE AMERICANS WORKING TOGETHER FOR PEOPLE.
Get down to basics. First get back to what the federal government is suppose to do, Protect the people. Make sure the armed forces have what they NEED, not what some lobbyist wants them to need. Take care of our military and their families, including the veterans. They are taking care of us after all.
In cutting back on the budget, the primary thing is to do what is best for the people.
Quit funding illegal aliens. Have the EPA back off on holding people back whether it's a non-union industry trying to get started or a frog that stops a farmer from planting crops to feed people.

So the Republican strategy of obstruction worked. They prevented the economy from improving, and the people blame Obama for it.

I hate that people blame President Obama for all of the countries economic issues. We must realize that he can only go so far with legislation. He has attempted to use bipartisan efforts and now look at the result. http://www.perspectivestv.com Twitter @PerspectivesGA

Obama has 38,000 plates for fundraising and doesn't give two whatevers about what is going on in America. He so smart that he said yesterday, that he gave a medal of honor to a guy who came back from Iraq. He said he was alive! Sorry, the soldier died! In Vienna, he said he didn't speak Austrian, and the word corps, he pronounced with a P. Outside of a teleprompter and the media made intelligence, you obats fell for a fake.

Mrs.Obama

She just can't imagine an America where she doesn't have her own jumbo jet and crew on demand....Why do you think she's finally proud of America after 44 years?.......And those pesky 17 required vacations a year can become financially inconvenient for those that actually have to pay for them with their own money........

Last summer was "Recovery Summer" according to Obama and Biden. It appears they ate their words on that one. It also is evident the stimulus was a total flop and will really hurt us in the long run. In addition to that it helped devalue the dollar. Now progressives are pushing for yet another stimulus. The insanity!

The stimulus didn't go to the people who needed it and could/would put it back into the economy.
11:15 AM on 08/06/2011
You cant say that the stimulus was a total flop. I know of many who benefited from the stimulus funds. New jobs and programs for school children were created in my area and it was all because of the stimulus money. I think we often forget the small things that we all often benefit from. Major change doesn't come overnite. http://www.perspectivestv.com Twitter @PerspectivesGA

"We are at the brink of a global, chain-reaction collapse of the present international, trans-Atlantic system. A probable date for this, unless the Glass-Steagall law of 1933 is restored by emergency legislation, is a date presently scheduled in the U.S.A. for about July 10, 2011, or, at whatever time the Constitutional closing date for the resolution of the date of the states' reckoning on the resolution of their part in the matter."

Hey, Democrat, do you want your candidate in the WH? Sure, you do.
Hey, Independent, do you want your candidate in the WH? Sure, you do.
OK, fine, have it your way. Let's modify the constitutional to implement a triarchy in the WH. Not only does everyone win but we cease the endless palaver.
