Tiger Woods To Miss AT&T National Next Week, Says He's Following 'Doctor's Orders'

Tiger Woods Att National

06/22/11 05:21 PM ET   AP

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods will miss another golf tournament as he recovers from injuries to his left leg, saying Wednesday he will not play in the AT&T National next week outside Philadelphia.

"Doctor's orders," Woods posted on Twitter.

He said he would be at Aronimink to support the tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. Woods said he is "feeling stronger," but is still not 100 percent.

Woods, who has slipped to No. 17 in the world ranking, has not completed a tournament since he tied for fourth at the Masters. He said he hurt his left knee and Achilles hitting a shot on the 17th hole of the third round from an awkward stance in the pine straw.

He tried to compete in The Players Championship, but withdrew after nine holes.

The next tournament on the list is the British Open, which starts July 14 at Royal St. George's in England. Woods did not mention whether he planned to play the next major. If he did, that would mean two months without any competition before playing the British Open.

Woods is scheduled to be at Aronimink next week, to sign the "We Salute Our Heroes" tribute wall in which fans can write personal messages to the U.S. military. He has a news conference Tuesday afternoon, and is expected to take part in the military opening ceremony on Wednesday.

Woods won the AT&T National in 2009 when it was played at Congressional. It moved to Aronimink for two years because Congressional hosted the U.S. Open last week, won in record fashion by Rory McIlroy.

A year ago at Aronimink, Woods failed to break par in any of the four rounds – the first time he had done that in a regular PGA Tour event in 11 years – and tied for 46th.

(This version CORRECTS to Aronimink throughout.)

The race for the top rankings in the PGA is akin to the Repub primary - it's there for the taking, but nobody is capable enough to hold on to it for more than a few weeks.....erm...a few days.

What remains to be seen, provided Tiger is able to physically rehabilitate his legs, is whether or not he can mentally intimidate his competitors as he once did. Much has happened in the past couple of years and Tiger has lost some of his mystique. It is possible that the new crop of golfers will not wilt before him as some in the past did.

Tiger Woods violently torques his legs and back every time he drives a golf ball.  Over his long career, this has happened hundreds of thousands of times.  Damage to joints and connective tissue is progressive and even when "healed" the damage doesn't actually fully disappear.  I am a fan of his golf game and have been inspired by his work ethic and competitive spirit.  I hope that he does listen to his doctors and does not rush his return to the tour.

The man is a stud and his golf run isn't over. Those of you who think he doesn't have it in him to make a come back obviously know little about sports. Are his best days behind him? Probably. However his second gear is better than 95% of those on tour. I'm a Rory fan and a Tiger fan. Champions in completely different ways. When Tiger's back on track, golf will be back on track. Lastly, for all his human faults Tiger has helped thousands of kids all over the world. He's a not a God, he's a person just like us all. I've made a few mistakes through the years, how about you?

He's not just like us. He's a serial cheater who thought he was entitled to have whatever he wanted. He's getting what he deserved!

His personal stuff is between him and his wife. None of our business. If you have never made a mistake, then start talking. If you have, you might want to quit pointing fingers at others.

His golf is exciting. Even when limping and on his worst golf ever, the crowds following him are greater than most. When in trouble on the golf course, hardly anyone is as inventive and successful as he is.

Golf misses him. He singlehandedly increased sponsor payments for a decade simply for the golf he played. I, for one, find golf tournaments without him boring to watch, simply because no other player can make watching golf more exciting for me. Rory McIlroy certainly has the talent to one day be a great player, but he's not quite there yet. He still has to prove himself. And I hope he does.

Okay Mother Mary! I bet you are all that is virtuous and sanctimonious.

What talent and drive he has left in him to break Jack's major record is not the point. He faces a future on bum wheels, one of which may have to be bionic before he's done. Golf is not too physically demanding. But when you have to walk miles per round and your game is predicated on stressful demanding stoke play, it will be a struggle to comeback let alone win like he used to.

Professional golf is very demanding physically. It's not the walking part that is, but the swing itself that sets extreme demands on your left knee, your back, and your feet.

I can say Tigers new golf guru coach has totally screwed him up. Tiger may play again but he has to many issues in his head. He is done.
10:22 PM on 06/22/2011
I look forward to Tiger over-coming all the recent issues and making his way back to the top of the rankings. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Let's stop casting stones and pray for his mental and physical healing. "For all have sinned and fall short" Tiger still has a lot to give to the sport of golf and can regain his self respect with time and the support of his fellow man. How would you want to be treated if you were in his shoes?
10:55 PM on 06/22/2011
The thought of you kneeling down and praying for the "mental and physical healing" of Tiger Woods is absolutely surreal to me.
