Washington Post Passed On Jose Antonio Vargas' 'Undocumented Immigrant' Story

Jose Antonio Vargas

First Posted: 06/22/11 02:39 PM ET Updated: 08/22/11 06:12 AM ET

NEW YORK –- Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas shocked the media world Wednesday by revealing that he’s an undocumented immigrant in an upcoming New York Times magazine story splashed across the paper’s homepage.

But The Washington Post, one of Vargas’ previous employers, actually could have run the piece first but decided not to, after spending several weeks working on it.

Carlos Lozada, editor of the Post’s weekend Outlook section, confirmed to The Huffington Post that Vargas came to the paper with the story.

“I worked on it for some weeks with the intention of possibly running it in Outlook,” Lozada said. “Ultimately, the decision was to not move forward with it.”

Lozada said that he’s “delighted [Vargas] found such a good home for it.” He declined to comment further.

"We made a judgment not to run the piece," Post spokeswoman Kris Coratti said. "We think it is a really interesting first person account and we’re glad he found a place to share his story."

Post management plays a small role in the story. Vargas writes how assistant managing editor Peter Perl, then the director of newsroom training, knew about his undocumented status and kept that fact hidden during the journalist's tenure. It's unclear whether a Post manager's role could have led to the paper not running the story (which undoubtedly would have found a home elsewhere and did).

Coratti said that "what Peter did was wrong," but declined to discuss individual personnel matters.

Times magazine editor Hugo Lindgren isn't sure why the Post decided against running the story. But he's not complaining.

“We knew it was from The Washington Post," Lindgren told The Huffington Post. “We do not know why they didn’t run it."

"We obviously think it is a provocative, well-written piece of journalism," Lindgren continued. "So we were delighted to have it fall in our laps."

Vargas, who has also worked as a senior contributing editor for The Huffington Post and has written for top magazines like The New Yorker and Rolling Stone, describes “living a different kind of reality” as an undocumented immigrant in the United States and discusses the people who helped him along the way.

Mario Ruiz, vice president of communications for Aol, responded to news of Vargas' undocumented status in a statement. “Jose was hired as an employee at The Huffington Post after submitting paperwork evidencing his eligibility for work in the U.S., which was reviewed in accordance with the company’s standard practice," Ruiz said. "He stopped working for us a year ago."

In addition to the Times magazine piece, Vargas spoke to ABC News, with segments from that interview running in the next few days on “World News,” Good Morning America,” and “Nightline."

Vargas also launched Define American, an initiative to bring “new voices into the immigration conversation, shining a light on a growing 21st century Underground Railroad: American citizens who are forced to fill in where our broken immigration system fails.”

Vargas did not respond to requests for comment.

UPDATE: : Chris Suellentrop, an editor at the Times magazine, wrote Wednesday afternoon how Vargas approached him after the Post decided against publishing the piece and why the Times editors ran it.

What is the different between Mr. Vargas and other Illegal Aliens who get deported? Nothing.
Those who work on the fields get deported all the times. If the US start to cherry pick who to deport and who not, the United States is corrupt.

It is like in the 50s when no white man could commit a crime against an African American?

Now our government is hasitating to enforce the law, because he worked for the Post? And not on the field? What is our country becoming? It is ok for a white color worker to commit a crime but the same crime is punished if a blue coller worker doing it?

What is going on here America?

He broke many US laws. He gave himself up. Now ICE should do what they get paid for.
Deport Mr Vargas. End of story.

Janet Napolitanos $ 56.3 billion dollar budget should be able to cover expenses for Mr. Vargas deportation.

he knows he risks deportation...what makes you think a case isn't proceeding against him?
The one thing he has is that he's Gay...as in some countries (I have no idea in his case) people are persecuted for that. I am not sure the US would repatriate someone...maybe they could claim asylum? not sure how law works.

Why hasn't he become a LEGAL resident .? He admits to using fake documents to get a job ?
Has he been arrested yet?

it's not that simple. He arrived illegally (not in his control, he was 12 and didn't know he was illegal until he was 16) so he'd have to go back for ten years then try again

This is really the Ultimate American Story.
I hope it ends well. He's a good American - one we should be proud to count amongst us.

A good American? He falsified documents, disobeyed the law, and made fools of all those people who tried to help him. On top of the fact that he is a slap in the face to the thousands, if not millions, of people who went through the process, followed the rules, and came to this country LEGALLY. This is not the"Ultimate American Story." This is a story about how he scammed the government and got away with it. Not my idea of a good American.

people fall into these things...he found himself an American boy living an American life...then found out he was illegal. After the fact.
He didn't tell the initial lie but found himself compounding lies with lies...and finally he couldn't take it anymore. He is guilty but also, he acted like almost all human beings would in his shoes. His beloved grandfather taught him (by doing it himself, getting illegal documents) that it was OK to lie about that kind of thing. He had to come to understand no matter how he contributed..as he strived to do...it was not ok. IT was an evolution.

I think some of these posters are just upset because no matter how hard they try, they will never be capable of achieving what this man has. He is clearly hard working and intelligent. Did he take advantage of the system? No. INDIVIDUALS saw his work ethic and potential and CHOSE to help him. Shouldn't his be an inspirational, remarkable story and not cause to attack and condemn?

Looks like they take away our Jeebs argument doesnt really work here.

Employement is gained - it is not a zero sum game where if one loses another gets.

Hoe many of you here think you might replace his job if he wasnt to be in this country?

This is the story of a young man who, without the support of his parents reached the peaks of his profession. A truly inspiring story only possible in america not because he is undocumented but because he is a self made man who achieved what he wants with hard work and effort.

I wonder whose social security number he was using. It had to be issued by the social security department somewhere down the line. Usually, in these instances, they use the ss number of someone who is deceased.

"Vargas also launched Define American, an initiative to bring “new voices into the immigration conversation, shining a light on a growing 21st century Underground Railroad: American citizens who are forced to fill in where our broken immigration system fails.”

Can anyone explian what this means? What Am erican citizens are being "forced to fill in where our broken immigration system fails."

I do know about American citizens forced to go jobless because millions of nonagriculture jobs are held by illegal immigrants, but I don't think the author of this story wants to stick up for jobless Americans.

Jersey - I think he means the people who helped him along the way, knowing that he was here illegally, because, in his opinion, the system is broken. That's what he means by "Underground Railroad." In my opinion, the reason the Washington Post chose not to run his story is because they are a part of that story, and they know that there are ramifications for knowingly hiring someone who is here illegally. It seems they're distancing themselves from him before an investigation is opened about their hiring practices.

So US helped the Philippines to gain its independence from Spain in 1898 only to turn that island into its own colony, leading to the Philippine American War, which the US won. Afterwards, President McKinley justified the US's annexation of the Philippines: "There is nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God's grace do the very best we can by them, as our fellow men for whom Christ also died." Thus, came the occupation, the effort to force Filipino people to speak English and to abandon their Roman Catholicism in favor of Protestantism. The Philippines originally declared its independence from Spain in 1898, yet was not "granted" autonomy by the US government until 1934 and its independence was not recognized by the US until 1946.

So what's worse - an "illegal alien", sent to the US for a better life, who achieves success that most "real" Americans never will, or a country that posits itself as an ally to an island colony, desperate for its independence, only to make said island its "possession" and to force its culture and language upon the island's inhabitants? Many of the people ranting about illegal immigrants either know nothing about America's imperialism or refuse to acknowledge it. As a nation, we lack a sensible and fair immigration policy, yet we have illegally occupied so many "weaker" nations (Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Philippines, etc.) it's shameful.

And one more thing: I'm a teacher and consistently, the students who value and take the most advantage of the free education they receive, are more often immigrants or the children of immigrants, while an unacceptable number of the American students are lazy and feel entitled. Thus country is embarrassing and I am s glad that I am leaving for good next month. At least I don't have to stick around here and watch it decline even further. And yes, I am a citizen, born and raised.

I hope you aren't really a teacher who has spent years with students you didn't like.

In any event, American citizens are Americans citizens whether you or I approve of them or not. If you are leaving the country for good, then I am glad you are moving. I suppose you are taking all your retirement benefits, paid for by the American citizens you think so little of. Your students are well rid of you and your exploitation of them.

So now it is ok to be an illegal immigrant if you work for a liberal rag..verrry interesting...and predicable.

If you think the Post is liberal, then the Wall Street Journal is commie.

Deport him. There's no "Pulitzer Prize winner" exception to the law. We can't pick and choose which illegal aliens to deport.
