Cory Monteith's Drug Addiction: I'm Lucky To Be Alive

Cory Monteith

When you see Cory Monteith singing and dancing on "Glee," know that the joy he brings to teenaged Finn isn't drawn from past experience.

The star, now 29, opens up to Parade Magazine this weekend in a bit of a shocking article, revealing his drug addicted past and journey to becoming the star of a hit TV show.

From British Columbia, Monteith grew up in a fractured home, as his dad left when he was just seven years old. He began drinking and smoking marijuana -- sometimes skipping school to do so -- and attended 12 different schools by the time he was 16, when he dropped out -- a far cry from his character on "Glee."

Admitting that he's lucky to be alive, Monteith says that when it came to drugs, he was game to try "anything and everything, as much as possible."

His mom and family intervened, sending him to rehab, but it didn't stick. That's when he made the one move that began to change his life.

"I stole a significant amount of money from a family member," he told Parade. "I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn't care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, 'Yeah, it was me.' It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years."

A move to a small city and some acting lessons began to turn the tide, and he earned his GED in 2009. Now, his character on "Glee" is facing his own graduation, albeit a more traditional one.

"I don't think of it in terms of eliminating or replacing. Because I think the thing about this cast is people love them and they are incredibly talented. They've left sort of an indelible mark," creator Ryan Murphy recently told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show. "The thing that I wanted to do and the cast wanted to do, we didn't want to have a show where they were in high school for 8 years. We really wanted it to be true to that experience. We thought it would be really cool if we were true to the timeline."

Looking beyond "Glee," Monteith is working on a movie career; he'll appear in the Selena Gomez-Leighton Meester teen comedy, "Monte Carlo," and will topline a comedy titled, "Sisters & Brothers." It's a far cry from where he was about a decade ago.

FAIL

You cannot be a drug addict if all you do is smoke cannabis.

1. There is psychological addiction, as in believing that you can't "get calm" or have fun without weed. So yes you can be addicted, regardless of the physical addiction.

2. He says that's where he started. -- Admitting that he's lucky to be alive, Monteith says that when it came to drugs, he was game to try "anything and everything, as much as possible." Learn2Read.

Weed and alcohol? Isn't that what you're supposed to do in high school?

RIght!? Maybe if I'd done it in high school, I'd be famous and sexy too. Unfortunately, I was too busy reading and you know, going to class.

Its funny...the trashiest most drug addicted kids I went to school with mostly have very successful lives as far as the eye can see: nice cars, nice homes, stable relationships with someone good looking...and I'm pretty sure its all from drug money because they work the CRAPPIEST jobs.

That was my tangent, sorry.

I have one problem with this article.. They say he started smoking marijuana but they do not delve into deeper issues showing that Marijuana was not his downfall. They merely hint at that.

Marijuana and "Dug addict" do not go together. And that association should NEVER have been made in society yet through pressures by the fabric and textile industry including Rockfeller and associates that is the image that was put into place and sadly our government has continued to try and force down our throats.

The "any thing and everything" comment is a look at this person on psychological make up and mindset.

I want nobody here thinking or even claiming that Marijuana made it worse or was the start.. It is not a gateway drug and never has been.

It is not addicting, well not in a physical sense, your body cannot and will never develop a physical need or craving for cannabis.

Mental addiction is another story, but that mental addiction can happen with anything. And not everybody is affected with mental addiction.

Anyone who has loved an addict knows that even when things look great there is no guarantee they'll stay that way but it's nice to see someone who has come through it and is working to stay healthy and acknowledging .Video - http://wp.me/p1sMVj-fE

It's great to see a young star moving in this direction instead of the opposite downfall after becoming a star. I'm really glad to read this type of story.

I gain a lot of respect for someone who's had a messed up past but makes an effort to clean their life up and do better. I never would have guessed he was a drug addict, but hey, looks are deceiving sometimes. He's definitely an inspiration to others who feel like they can't dig out of the hole they dug themselves in.

Cool that he got clean. Now in terms of career moves, the worst thing he could do post-Glee is a teen movie. He should leave the genre and never return, taking a smaller role in an adult drama.
