George Clooney And Elisabetta Canalis Split: What Caused The Breakup?

Did George Clooney and Italian model Elisabetta Canalis break up because he's already tried marriage once before--and it didn't work out?

The famed actor and social activist was married once before, though he and actress Talia Balsam--whom he wed in 1989--split just four years after they tied the knot. In January, Clooney told Piers Morgan that once is enough.

"I was married, so I gave it a shot," he said.

Canalis may have been holding out to be the next Mrs. Clooney--to no avail. She told Italian magazine Chi earlier this month that she plans to be married in the future.

"I am a firm believer in marriage, in the future I will be married, but for the time being I am happy as I am," she said."I don't need anything to confirm how happy I am."

But don't expect Canalis to sit home mourning the split. She was spotted socializing with NBA star (and single dad) Dwyane Wade at a fashion show Tuesday afternoon--merely hours before she and Clooney released a statement about the breakup.

A source tells the New York Daily News that Canalis "didn't appear too heartbroken" while flirting with Wade, who is dating actress Gabrielle Union.

As for Clooney, it's already being speculated which newly single actress the eternal bachelor will date next.

Plausible argument. You see it all the time...and too bad for the unlucky woman or man who falls in love with a person who has "tried" marriage and decides it's not for them. You know, like all marriages are the same. I think GC is just jaded on 'marriage' and it doesn't matter how beautiful the person is, he is afraid that venturing that 'marriage' path will be doomed. He's not the first, nor will he be the last person to feel this way.

what I find interesting is that none of the long list of girlfriends have fallen pregnant as happened with jack nicholson, finally having some semblance of a marriage and kids.

He's a soulless creature wih no heart. He's not capable of normal relationships. He doesn't love anyone. I really don't know why women date him, it's pointless. People are in relationships for the long term. He just is weird. He doesn't have ANY female friends and at his age that's not normal. Even gay men have female friends. He's dysfunctional. It's just a joke anymore how he is, and he looks 70.

Maybe Jennifer Anistan and George should get together - they both seem to have problems with relationships - actually as long as George is happy then he can pick up trophies whenever he wants and he really doesn't need to get married - he seems very leval headed and does a lot of good work for charity so I wish him the best of luck!!

It sounds like George has a serious problem with attachment. If the ability to 'attach' is not there, (usually a function of childhood experience), then a life of temporary relationships is generally the result, wandering from relationship to relationship, like a person lost n the desert.

she probably hears the clock ticking, wants marriage and family and realized she wasn't getting it from him. She may have pressured him as a last resort, and he didn't go for it. Makes sense. She was smart to move on now if she wants to attain her own goals.

The article does not answer the question it poses: What caused the split?

Every time Clooney breaks up with someone the intimation is that the cause is his not willing to be married, but his girlfriends know this about him going into the relationship, so how can that be what the break up is about?

The video specifically states that Canalis and Clooney don't want to discuss the split; that it is a private matter. In other words, the video is all about NOT revealing what caused the split.

If you're going to write a headline that is a question, at least answer the question posed.

Headlines like these are one of the most frustrating things about HuffPost!
