'Heming Way' Author Marty Beckerman Decries Loss Of 'Cartoon Character' Masculinity (VIDEO)

They say it's a man's world, but Ernest Hemingway wouldn't believe it if he were alive today, according to Marty Beckerman, author of "The Heming Way."

"Anything a Cub Scout could do, the average American guy can't do, like how to hunt, how to fish, how to start a fire," Beckerman said. "If you dropped us in the middle of the woods, we'd be dead within an hour."

Vegetarian restaurants, spa treatments, butt-accentuating underpants, fruity cocktails -- Hemingway would gouge out his eyes if he saw the indulgences consumed by men in 2011, Beckerman says (except for the fruity cocktails, which he drank with gusto.)

The downfall of Beckerman's male cohort originated, he said, with its dependence on computers.

"We can all search Google and update our worthless status messages, but few of us can skin a fish, navigate by starlight, climb to the apex of a mountain, or transform majestic creatures of the Southern Hemisphere into piano keyboards with a double-barreled rifle, a hacksaw, and a little elbow grease," Beckerman wrote.

Men today aren't spared any criticism, especially those who shave their body hair.

When he halts the attack, Beckerman wavers between two takes on Hemingway, the author of classics like "A Farewell To Arms" and "The Sun Also Rises." There's a nostalgic rhapsody for the decisive, courageous, self-reliant image of manhood embodied by Hemingway and his characters and the repudiation of the alcoholic, misogynistic, belligerent image of manhood embodied by Papa Hemingway and his male protagonists.

"The masculinity of the past had a lot of problems," said Beckerman, 28, originally from Alaska, "but what Hemingway symbolized as a cartoon character is something that American men have lost."

The point of the slim volume isn't to yearn for the old days when Abercrombie & Fitch was a sporting-goods store where Hemingway bought rifles or to bemoan its current form as a tourist attraction with velvet ropes and half-naked male models at the flagship Manhattan location.

Beyond the sarcasm, it's the forgotten mentality of Hemingway and his ilk that seems to bother Beckerman the most.

"It goes beyond being able to do the camping stuff," he said. "Do we feel confident when we speak? Do we second guess ourselves? The idea that death is the worst thing that can happen to you, is not what Hemingway thought. Cowardice, second guessing your own actions, not feeling proud of yourself; these are all worse than death."

Fans will appreciate the tidbits that Beckerman throws in to show Hemingway's macho limits, such as his use of a night-light after returning home from World War I.

Don't worry if the dichotomy Beckerman posits of the manly men of yore and the effeminate pansies of 2011 comes across as oversimplified. Sociologists say times haven't changed too much, even if men no longer eat meat they caught with their bare hands.

"In both Hemingway's time and our own there were multiple definitions of masculinity," said State University of New York at Stony Brook sociologist Michael Kimmel. "In the '20s and '30s there were metrosexuals -- think Cole Porter -- they were urban dandies. Hemingway didn't like them.

"Hemingway extolled the earthiness of the worker, the soldier, the hunter," added Kimmel. "That model becomes somewhat intriguing to white-collar workers in cubicles who think they're losing their masculinity -- think 'Fight Club.' Here's the thing that remains constant: the men who become our heroes, they do the right thing and they take responsibility for actions."

There could be another explanation for why men today indulge in things that their forefathers would never have tried, such as bikini waxings.

"Men are just more secure with themselves," said Jasper Kew, the manager of Why Not Men's Spa in Manhattan. "Nowadays, people are more open."

Hemingway was bisexual and a drunk. His son had the operation to become a transsexual. Hemingway was a manly myth.

are you saying being bisexual can't be manly?
05:51 PM on 07/02/2011
In the manly myth bisexuality is not a part of it. Of course outside the myth, sexual orientation hasn't anything to do with manliness.

There are still real men in our society, but we find that Hollywood has decided to portray the perfect man as a sensitive, eco-aware, passive, individual, who is politically correct, ie., leftist.

Hollywood has plenty of depictions of NRA loving, gun toting, mass murderers.

We are still out here but it seems women these days prefer these "softer" males. It doesn't bother me at all, more fish and game for me.

So let me get this straight, I'd have to put my favorite shotgun in my mouth and blow my head off to prove that I'm a manly man? There is a lot of land and a lot of Americans between NYC and LA and quite a few of them volunteered to fight in AFG and IRQ, some of them died fighting for their country, all of them heroes and heroines and I'm willing to bet there are a lot of Americans who can make a fire, catch a fish, shoot a hog, gut an animal, re: being "manly". I suggest you amend your writings to reflect reality and not what is considered the "norm" in NYC and LA, both cities are NOT reflective of the true America in which we all live.
03:35 PM on 07/02/2011
Wrong. They are America, like it or not. And more people choose to live in them and cities like them than live in less urbanized areas by far.

Both their taxes and innovation are probably subsidizing you substantially if you live in other states, too.

Real men... marry women, take care of their kids, faithful to their wives, like dogs, know how to use tools, support theirr families, fear God, work hard, give to the poor, are honest, don't accept handouts from the government, don't whine, open the door for ladies (even femenists), cry occasionally, not afraid to get hurt or bleed, can change a tire on a car, can cook a basic meal, do their own laundry, willing to go to war if need be, defend innocent babies and kids, take care of their parents, respect their elders...

Yep, probably 100's and 100's of millions of "men" out there don't fit the category

Wow, atheists aren't even men at all now?

They've always been first on the list to the slaughterhouse.

I'd say real men don't fall in love with their hatreds, but try to overcome them. Real men provide room for others to live in peace and with respect.

Real men do not need to be the only one in the room who is allowed any respect or dignity.

Role model aside, yes men of today (20's-30's) are wimps & have no basic skills. I would have no problem killing two or three with my bare hands while their friends cowered in fear.

All boys should be taught how to shoot a rifle, kill game, skin it, and build a fire to cook it before being allowed to graduate from high school. Physical education including hand to hand combat should be taught as early as grade school. Boys who excell in leadership and combat skills should be rewarded and those who do not should be shamed, degraded and pushed until they do. This country is full of nothing but worthless and weak sissies. The day will come when Russia or China invades and they will toss these pieces of weak garbage into ovens where they rightfully belong. The land belongs to those who are strong enough to kill to keep it. That is how life is. The weak are exterminated, and their property becomes that of the strong. America has too many sissies, weaklings and liberals. Those 3 things go hand in hand. I would bring back mutual combat to decide issues including mutually agreed upon fights to the death. I would bring back gladitorial sports using condemned prisoners fighting to the death and require all students over the age of 8 to be in attendence. All children should attend school all year round so that their fighting skills can be perfected and so they can be toughened up through deprivation and hard physical labor. being able to kill an animal with your bare hands would be another requirement for graduation from grade school. This pathetically weak society is rotting and in decline.

Don't forget that a healthy society is one that is in perpetual war, which refines the characters of men and strengthens the nation.

Hitler didn't.

I really don't think holding Ernest Hemingway up as a role model is particularly a good idea - considering he was alcoholic, massively depressed at times, and his quest for the outward show of masculinity might have been an issue of him not so sure of his own sexuality and in the end, the dude tried to walk into an airplane propeller but was stopped - later he took a shotgun to himself. So please, he might have been a writer of substance for his time, but not the model I would look to for masculinity at any time.

As for "skinning fish" - very few fish are skinned - there is no reason for anyone to navigate by the stars, and blowing away innocent animals isn't considered a nice thing to do anymore.....so if that is the standard of masculinity - several hundred million men on earth ain't cutting it.

Agreed, way too many girly men. I'm gay, and I'm more masculine than many straight guys I know. This metro-sexual thing has gone too far.

Nothing more disgusting than a whiney, fussy, swishy man with no body hair.
09:36 PM on 06/28/2011
Some of the young men today are more girly than girls. It's a tragedy to see "man" the ruler of earth strut around in high heels and make up. This will not last when Islam or China finally come for us.

I have enjoyed the back and forth banter. How about being happy being whatever it is that you want to be. I do think that there are some skills a man should have. Being about to shoot, run, build a fire, navigate witha map and compass, or on the road. Changing a tire, basic first aid. As far as shaving the body or getting your nails done, I spent 20 years in the Marine Corps and I shaved all my body hair off as being in jungle training, having body hair mad eyou hotter, sweat more and caused friction and chafing in your arm pits and crotch area. After leaving the Corps, I still work out and swim, and enjoy the feeling of having no hair. As far as getting your nails done. I would reward myself with a MANicure, massage and good steak dinner when coming back for a deployment or tough field op. Some women like sex with no "jungle" to deal with...to each their own.

The internet (and cell/smart phones) has permanently changed human relationships. Within seconds anyone now can find out information about polyamory, androgyny, fetishs, GLBT groups, communes, and other previously marginalized and discriminated against groups. We have options now that were inconceivable even 20 years ago. The definition of "masculinity" will continue to become more and more diverse. There will still be those who prefer to be a 'traditional' male or love only such men. And there is nothing wrong with that. There will also be a continued increase in androgyny and other forms of sexual and gender identity, and that needs to be accepted as well.

But making all men conform to a certain stereotypical role is wrong, and creates other problems. I would be bored if all men and women acted a certain stereotypical way without ever deviating from the norm

We are never going back to "the good old days". People need to deal with it. Our knowledge based society will not allow it.
09:34 PM on 06/28/2011
Sorry pal, but in this volitile world- we need "real men" to protect our nation. Swishy, fruity, girly men will not cut it when our enemies wage war on us.
09:38 PM on 06/28/2011
You need to "deal with" the fact that your sick, twisted perversions will never be considered "normal and acceptable." You need to see a shrink.

Being a man has always being a conditional conduit- all we’ve done is swap a gun for a computer, a horse for a Ferrari and hopefully gone on and conquered the world, all a woman on the other hand has to do to declare her evolution in femininity is just look damn pretty. How despicable and corrupt. But then again you do want to land the gals- right fellas?

Dream on. You must be a kid. When push comes to shove, you'll be a dead 'man' and, the guy with the gun will take your computer.

There are plenty of places in our great country where men are still men! I have doors held open for me every time I am out shopping, at a restaurant, etc. When driving, people still stop to let cars pull out when traffic is heavy, four way stops may be a bit slower but it is because everyone is motioning the other cars to go first! When society tried to make everyone alike, that is when people began to be egocentric. When you are no different than the next person, you have no appreciation for differences! Thankfully, there are plenty of places where differences are not just accepted, but appreciated! People aren't trying to be equal, they are simply trying to live a good life, work hard, be true to their word, and hurdle the challenges that life throws your way without whining or blaming someone else!

Well Carly if I were about 100 years younger you and I would be a match. Don't give up, there are many of the kind of man you're looking for out there.
