Nguyen Duy Hai Of Vietnam Begs For Help Removing 176-lb. Tumor (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/23/11 05:04 PM ET Updated: 11/15/11 06:01 AM ET

The tumor on Nguyen Duy Hai's right leg is bigger than his leg itself, rendering him unable to walk, and now he is begging the world for help.

The 31-year-old Vietnamese man has reportedly suffered from this giant tumor since childhood. Even after doctors amputated his leg at the knee 14 years ago, the tumor has continued to grow, swelling to a weight of 176 pounds and leaving him housebound under the care of his 61-year-old mother, News.co.au notes.

"I can't do anything. I can only sit and lie down," he told the press.

Doctors have stated that the tumor -- which is the largest on record in Vietnam -- is non-cancerous and potentially caused by a genetic mutation.

Unable to afford further medical treatment, Hai is seeking financial assistance from anyone who can help and sharing his story with publications around the world.

News outlets ranging from The New York Daily News to Fox News have already detailed his plight.

Those interested in contributing to his cause can contact the Red Cross of his hometown, Da Lat, at phone number 063.3822035.

Further contact information is available, in Vietnamese, at VNExpress.

An Indian woman with two wombs has given birth to two boys, one from each uterus. Delighted mum Rinku Devi delivered her one-in-fifty-million babies last Friday (29 July) in the northern city of Patna. Stunned doctors said giving birth to healthy babies conceived in different ovaries is so rare an average of one case is reported each year anywhere in the world. The babies, however, are not twins, as they were conceived at different times. According to gynaecologist Dr. Dipti Singh, "Rinku Devi suffers from a rare medical condition known as the uterus didelphys in which the womb develops in two parts, each with its own fallopian tube. It is quite a rare congenital condition and less than 100 women around the world are known to have it." Rinku's condition was not diagnosed until she went into labor, but after a one-hour-long surgery, she gave birth to two little boys weighing 2 kilograms and 1.5 kilograms respectively.

My goodness. It is Viet Nam/..a poor guy. Where would you suggest he get help??? Very few hospitals, little medical care and no money to boot. If I understood he went to the doctor and had his leg removed as a child but the tumor has coninued to grow....uh probably no money for doctor or bills. Not too hard to understand in a 3rd world country like that and it could be neurofibromatosis which is not caused by agent orange. But could be agent orange ya never know ...but fact IS through no fault of his own he seems to be without funds and medical care & in all probability there is not a place in Viet Nam equipped to remove a tumor that size. Shalom

When you see something like this, you have to put your bias aside. This is very sad. America should have never started marched in. There is actually much bigger communism here then it used to be in Vietnam. America has the strongest unions and entitlements on earth. It is time to change that because it bankrupts us.

America should have never started marching in??? Well we kinda were in that country for a long time before the war with the North escalated. IMO and we who were there should have never either been there or bailed out like we did. It appears history is repeating itself in the middle east.
Even in communism there are the haves and the have nots....ever see a poor or hungry communist politician?

Actually, he might not be able to survive the surgery.....it would take a surgical team of 15 to 20 people, given the size and probably vascularity of the tumour. It would be a horrendous process, and it is highly unlikely that this surgery could occur anywhere in the area of his native country. Its just not that simple.
08:39 AM on 06/25/2011
I feel very badly for this man and his mother but PLEASE do not have Americans be forced to pay for his surgery (and post-op needs)! Americans are unable to afford to go to the doctors as it is or buy necessary prescriptions. Charity begins at home. There are hundreds of other countries that should step up to the plate for a change.
09:10 AM on 06/25/2011
Nobody is forcing Americans to pay for his treatment, he is simply asking for assistance from others. And the story DID say that he was going to publications around the world. This is just a man who has suffered since childhood, and is desperate to get medical attention. You're not being forced to pay anything, and should not feel guilty for not doing so. I'm sure that if you were in his condition and unable to lead a normal and independent life, you would be just as desperate.
