Gay Marriage In New York: Celebrities Celebrate

First Posted: 06/25/11 12:44 AM ET   Updated: 08/24/11 06:12 AM ET

Finally, the New York State Senate passed a long-awaited law granting marriage equality to gay couples, launching a celebration of massive proportions throughout New York City.

Hollywood has long pushed for equality, breaking restrictive taboos with its honest, emotional depictions of gay men and women in positive ways. So many stars have advocated for passage of marriage equality, and upon the passage of the law, many of them took to Twitter to celebrate with friends and fans.

Here are some of the best tweets; the slideshow will be updated as the night goes on.

I don't see this as progress. If anything, progress would be to do away with marriage altogether. I think gay couples had it right in the first place. Be with someone you feel connected with and don't worry about the legal aspect of it. The main thing that is going to come out of this is that gay couple's will also be able to divorce. I really don't know why they are so happy. I guess to them it means they are more accepted as a couple now but why do they need that?

Such a stupid conversation this is. Denying a right to certain citizens is unconstitutional, no matter how you slice it. Each state giving gay people the right to marry piecemeal, brings to mind the Mason-Dixon line. Too bad the SCOTUS is so partisan as to let the constitutionality of anti-gay marriage laws get past them.

Jesus put this in my fortune cookie last night: "An admirer is concealing his affections for you." Really, "HIS." My soon-to-be-hubby said we will never again eat at Imperial Chinese (yeah, sure) and berated them for having gender-specific fortune cookies.

Whoopi said it best "you don't like gay marriage then don't marry a gay" these people seem to spend a lot of time thinking about us! Life has gone on as usual in all the countries that have legalized gay marriage,no anarchy no breakdown of the family unit, and the majority (straight) have done such a fine job in the marriage department!

Actually it's fun to watch the number of gay marriage breakups with alimony and such - be careful what you wish for. Marriage is highly overrated.

If gays get married and break up the way I've seen some guys in gay bars introduce me to their new "huzband" of-the-week, the state should make BANK on court fees. We might be able to compete with the heterosexual 52% breakups.

Marriage is a government contract.
It is not a holy writ from anyone's diety.

Remove all the legal and tax benefits, and see how popular it remains.

In my opinion (and I am entitled to it) is that people should be happy, live their lives, and be good HUMAN BEINGS. Leaving politics, religion and race issues out of it, it's really simple...mind your business. You worry about yourself and as long as you are being the best person you can be, who cares. It certainly doesn't phase me one bit about someone I dont know getting married to someone they love, because I cant change the world...just would like to see it a more accepting place. Im not gay. I love my gay/bi/straight/transgender/male/female/blonde/redheaded/brunette/fat/skinny/broke/rich friends/family.
