Conan O'Brien Lampoons Apple's Final Cut Pro X (VIDEO)

Conan Obrien Final Cut Pro X

Apple this week released Final Cut Pro X, a totally revamped version of its popular video editing software.

So far, reviews of this new Final Cut have been mixed. The New York Times published several scathing comments from users, including one claiming, "This is Apple's worst release in history."

Some, however, were quite pleased with the release. Late-night show host Conan O'Brien, for example, said on Thursday that his editing staff were positively tickled by Final Cut Pro X, despite what others have said.

"Apparently, it's so different from the last version of Final Cut that video and film editors all over Hollywood are having a very hard time adjusting to it," Conan said. "But our editors here at Conan are some of the best in the business, and they actually like the new software. In fact, they've prepared this video statement voicing their support for the new Final Cut Pro."

The video that follows, however, doesn't exactly highlight the software's finer points. While the editors tout features like background rendering and the slick new interface, their interviews are cut off at awkward times, and their sound isn't always in sync.

Check out the too-long pauses, the dead air, the puzzling transitions and more Final Cut fumbles (below).

I think they were doing fine with iMovie for hobbyists and enthusiasts and FCP for those who are earning their living with it. FCP X should have been iMovie2 perhaps - an upgraded amateur tool. Going the other direction is going to pan out to be a mistake I think.

I recall Ellen having to apologize over a comedy clip she made regarding the iPhone's tiny buttons.  That clip wasn't always funny, but it certainly wasn't inaccurate.

This clip is somewhat OTT, somewhat funnier, but is FC Pro X so awful in processing a finished video that it literally makes ALL of those screwups, exemplified for comedic effect?
(And, either way, how long before Conan has to apologize as well?)

I think Apple needs to do some apologizing on this one.

FCP X is just a glorified version of iMovie. So many professionals in my line of business have been complaining about it - poor interface, lack of any professional quality regarding the software, and most importantly for my line of work, the inability to export audio to AAF/OMF (among many other issues). How am I supposed to edit anything, especially audio?! Editors, audio engineers, post-production professionals refuse to use this program after testing it, trying it, or receiving comp copies. Big mistake Apple, big, big mistake. Good job on returning the majority of the market to Avid - they get the idea anyway.

The dumbing down of interfaces seems to be the push from many of companies that are mainly concerned with pedestrian computer users.

I can't remember a time that Apple EVER released a product where backward compatibility wasn't a priority. It was one of the reasons for my loyalty. You can't import previous FCP projects??? WHAT??? I am in the critical crowd on this one. I hope this is more a slip up than a harbinger of things to come.

A lot of my FCP colleagues are looking into Adobe Premiere again, since we have to learn and entirely new software that has dreadful limitations. What FCP X does have is access to all the cores in a multi-core processor and is based on 64-bit code. But it is modeled on a consumer interface and tool set and generally sucks. Apple is focused on consumer products now and with this release has abdicated the pro market, in my opinion. They pretty much have abandoned the Mac Pro computer line as well. (sigh)

Macrumors.com has a lot of talk about a new Mac Pro (and Mac Mini) coming out in ~2 months.  (it's still all rumors, as Apple tends to be quiet on things (ugh), but their delay in updated architecture doesn't demonstrate abandonment - yet,

If anything, the move to 64-bit is good as no ARM processor is 64-bit capable (yet), ARM is slower than Intel's lineup, and if anything "Lion" is showing a potential unification of GUI.  (I'll stick with Snow Leopard for now, however...  and Parallels 6, which has pretty much replaced Boot Camp for what I need Windows for...)

(I recall reading Apple doing a deal with ARM for their laptops, but power users will still exist, so the MBP line will still have higher-end units. Of that I feel certain, but as Apple loves having people speculate...)

FCP has 54% of the professional editing market.

Most of the Oscar Best Picture noms were cut on it.

This is typical Apple.

When going in an entirely new direction, writing the program from the ground up, it takes a year or two for them to get the bugs out.

Most won't upgrade until then.

Still it's only $300!

Down form $1,000!

If you are a staving artist that's critical.

have any won?...not sure. besides it's a mute point, it's not the tool it's the editor. as an audio person i get stuck using protools most of the time because people bought in to the hype and buried themselves...don't get me wrong there are some great things about the Tools but overall it's incredibly limiting for my needs. there are so many better audio options, but studios have just buried themselves in Mac/ProTools debt that getting out would be a Huge cost in a market that is dying.
i have a few buds that were Avid guys that switched to FCP and now want to go back but it's too costly...

I'd use AVID, but I'd have to tell my youngest to forget college, sell my house and drive a beat up Yugo for the rest of my life.
