Study Says Jews Volunteer, But Not Because Of 'Jewish' Values

(RNS) Young Jewish Americans volunteer enthusiastically for a multitude of causes, but the vast majority do not connect their service to their Jewish identity, Jewish institutions or Israel.

These findings, from a survey released Thursday (June 23), both hearten and concern Jewish leaders.

"The good news is that this is an idealistic, motivated population," said Jon Rosenberg, CEO of Repair the World, the New York non-profit that sponsored the study and promotes Jewish volunteerism. Rosenberg billed the report as the most comprehensive to date on young Jews and volunteerism.

Seventy percent of the 951 young adults surveyed said they had volunteered at least once in the past year, though much of that service was episodic, with 40 percent of respondents serving less than once a month.

Rosenberg and other Jewish leaders said they want to motivate young Jewish Americans to volunteer more regularly, but they also worry about the disconnect between young Jewish volunteers and their Jewish faith.

Only 27 percent of respondents said they volunteered based on their Jewish values, and only 10 percent indicated that their primary volunteer commitment was organized by a Jewish group. Just 3 percent said the primary focus of their volunteer efforts was a cause related to Israel.

The findings point to the need to teach young Jews how their service reflects their heritage, said Ruth W. Messinger, president of American Jewish World Service, which sends about 350 young Jews abroad each year to help poor non-Jews in the developing world.

"You don't have to learn the whole canon of Torah and commentary to learn how your service reflects Jewish values," she said, offering her organization as a model. "Our work is done with a set of Jewish teachings on why the work is Jewish work."

Rosenberg said the survey should push more synagogues and Jewish schools to emphasize service as an important part of Jewish life. "There are windows of opportunity from childhood through young adulthood when the connection can be made between who you are as a Jew and who you are as a global citizen," he said.

The survey also showed that service was closely linked to gender and religious observance, with Orthodox Jews showing the highest levels of volunteerism, at 83 percent. Of those surveyed, 78 percent of women said they had volunteered in the past year, compared to 63 percent of men. The respondents ranged in age from 18 to 35.

The survey was conducted as a joint effort between the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University and Gerstein-Agne Strategic Communications. Its sample was culled in part from a list of applicants to Taglit-Birthright Israel, the organization that gives young Jews free trips to Israel.

I must humbly disagree with Ruth - Jewish young adults need to be taught more about their spiritual heritage. This will in turn make them into more frequent volunteers.

Jews volunteer because of Jewish values ingrained in there upbringing and teachings. These values do not specifically have to be labeled or even taught as inherently Jewish. The soul of the Jew cannot be changed even if the Jew its in has never been taught about it.

So woo hoo for volunteering, but you are volunteering for the wrong reason??? I may have missed it in the article, but why are the majority of Jews volunteering? Could it simply be because it is the right thing to do? I like to think so.

I volunteer, not because I expect a reward in the world to come or want to have my own cloud and harp in heaven, for me that is irrelevant, I volunteer because as a Jew one of my jobs is to make THIS WORLD, the one I live on NOW, a better place for future generations.

The reason usa jews are more liberals is because they know their past hardships and are more educated and can't be brainwashed easly. They afford that education because of many of the famillies are middle class and not poor.

When you are poor like those whites in Western Virginia, you will be brainwashed easily by Fox News and you don't have a Computer to know the alternatives.

As of those who live in Israel, many of jews are eastern europeans or russians and probably they don't have a direct relative who suffered under Hitler Nazis, but USA Jews have close relatives who experienced the horrors of Nazis and that's the reason, they are more liberals and care more than any average americans, but still they need to have a clear vision of what is happening in israel because the right winger government is a very dangerous to the survival of israel just like our usa right wingers are very dangerous to the survival of the USA.

They don't need to be "brainwashed" by FOX News to tune into their programming when the left shows such a profound hatred for them, in the media, the entertainment industry on forums like HuffPo and out of the words of Democratic politicians and academics.

Let's not deny that fact.

Nope, the left just have anger toward them not hatred. We just feel they should know better to not keep voting against their own interests.

For example, Obamacare, however not that great for now, but which will cover 40 millions of the poor americans without healthcare insurance and which one day will become a single payer, will help many of them as Canadians and Northern Europeans enjoy it, and yet they didn't vote for Obama. Go figure!

My grandparents lived in Israel, and were Russian. ALL of their siblings died in the Holocaust, and many Israeli's have relatives who perished in the Holocaust. Please get your facts straight.

“The findings point to the need to teach young Jews how their service reflects their heritage.â€

Judaism is a this world affirming as well as transcendental. In some instances it has become secularized to a point beyond recognition. It is no surprise that the source has been lost for many individuals.

Without the “spiritual intention†for performing an act it remains within our theosophical tradition a “neutral†act as apposed to a “holy†act. A “neutral†act, although positive does not bring godliness into the world. It is not considered an act of “Tikun†(a word much misused) within the theosophical definition.

----Only 27 percent of respondents said they volunteered based on their Jewish values, and only 10 percent indicated that their primary volunteer commitment was organized by a Jewish group. Just 3 percent said the primary focus of their volunteer efforts was a cause related to Israel.---- So I can only guess that the 50%+ majority volunteered just because they thought it - if not right - just a good idea. I have said it many times in the last 5 years. If I was to follow a deity based religion it would be Judaism.

Hi hi and thanks for the query. I personally think judism is the best of the deity based or errr... least of the evils. lol. I ahve read and seen on tv (when I had cable) I ahve been cable free for over two years now. after religion it is the second greatest evil on this planet. but I do think it is the least offensive of the major beliefs. based on what I avhe seen, read and heard... they are the most opened minded. I feel this is far short of what you were looking for. there are hide bound religious people in every faith. I am sure they are in the jewish sector as well. peace.

I would like to see more Jewish people volunteer to become "true"Christians, stand alone, "I am gonna do near the best I can to help others understand what Our Creator wants all honesthearted people to know in order to gain His approval" type Christians. I have seen many "Jewish" people demonstrate they have very good minds and I feel if many of them would listen to the Hebrew Scriptures all the way through several times they would consider this possibility. Unfortunately I have never seen the Hebrew Scriptures available in audio form, but if one were to get a copy of the Isaac Leeser translation of the Hebrew Scriptures and a copy of the King James Old Testament, may as well get the whole thing on DVD as it is the cheapest way to get it other than free download, and listen to the KJ old testament and follow along watching the words in the Leeser translation one would see the wording is almost the same, however some verse numbering and order listings may be different. With all the troubles in the world and with the life of some people being so precious is there a better way to make the world a better place? Police officers can catch rapist or killers and some may be able to help prevent such crimes but the one who can help change the evil heart and attitude of those who would do such evil deeds has done SO MUCH more.

Oh heathen Christians, your "prophet" was killed by God's will and then you hid the body and told people he resurrected.
How could you make a whole religion around such stupidity we will never know.
11:00 PM on 06/26/2011
Kind of like claiming your Prophet ascended to heaven in a whirl wind or parted the red sea or that you could repel an angel of death by smearing your door with lambs blood.....

Or that twirling a chicken over your head an reciting an incantation would transfer your sins into the chicken....that's Judaism for you.

Don't even start with your anti-goy bigotry because you'll get called out.

Can someone define for me what "Jewish values" are supposed to be?

I find phrases like that - also like "Christian values" or "American values" - that people like to toss around to be amusing. It's as if the group named has found something special and endemic only to that group and not to other groups. Generally, there's going to be a bit of overlap between what you say your group's values are and what other groups say their values are. Most humans not all that different.

Rabbi Akiva said it best: "Don't do unto others as you would not want done to you, everything else is just commentary." That, in a nutshell, is 'Jewish values'. And yes, this overlaps with many other value systems.
04:11 PM on 06/26/2011
Thanks for clarifying.

Too bad more Christians can't be "more" Jewish. Plenty of them do unto others as they would not want done to themselves.
04:36 PM on 06/28/2011
Wasn't that Hillel? I think Akiva said to love others as you love yourself.
11:02 PM on 06/26/2011
Just because it's been defined as Christian values doesn't mean it can't be shared by others. I think you're showing a little bit of your own anti-Christian attitude rather than anything bad on the part of Christians.

I base this on the fact that people use charity as an excuse for not advocating greater social programs that would end these problems altogether. Something charities and volunteer work has never done. As for your ad hominem, its partly true I don't volunteer, anymore. I only do things if I find their effective, more often than not charity and volunteering is just used for self righteous posturing and positive affirmation. That's why I no longer participate in volunteering unless its for environmental work. If I do I just become part of the problem.

Community Service is alive and well among American Jews. In my home of Baltimore, I personally see Jews volunteering their time to The House of Ruth (Domestic Violence) and Our Daily Bread (hot meals) on a daily basis. Social Justice is one of the great gifts of the Jews to the world.

Because Jews are a religion, an ethnicity, and a culture saying "Jewish values" is a bit confusing. My experience is that Jews tend to be better educated, more liberal (i.e., open to new ideas and caring about others as opposed to themselves), and more worldly (interested in what goes on in the world.) These traits are a combination of cultural, ethnic, and religious traits, but they do end up spurring people to be more involved with the world rather than focused on their own welfare. Once you engage with the world, your heart opens, and you start to do things for others. The drumbeat of conservative rhetoric coming from Fox drives people in the exact opposite direction, to think only of themselves. This puts Jews in the strange condition where they care more about others than conservative Christians. It makes me grateful for my Jewish heritage, and very critical and cautious about the learnings from my Christian heritage.

"...(i.e., open to new ideas and caring about others as opposed to themselves).... "

A quote from Jeff Markel below.

"The Jewish idea of "Tikkun Olam" (healing the world) is not restricted to those who are overtly, or even marginally, "religious."

Sounds like Nation Building to me. How does that work, without destroying one's own?

Where does Tikkun Olam begin? Thomas Paine said, that the "world is his country and good his religion". Was Thomas Paine a Nation Builder, and how has that worked out for the USA?

I don't understand what you are saying. You cannot turn Tikkun Olam into a negative no matter how much you try to twist it.
And no, it has nothing to do with Nation Building (whatever thats supposed to mean).
