Joe Biden Warns Republicans On Debt Ceiling Talks

Joe Biden Debt Ceiling

By KEN THOMAS   06/26/11 08:18 AM ET   AP

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Vice President Joe Biden said Saturday the Obama administration wouldn't let middle class Americans "carry the whole burden" to break a deadlock over the national debt limit, warning that the Republican approach would only benefit the wealthy.

Addressing Ohio Democrats, Biden said there had been great progress in talks with Republican lawmakers on a deficit-reduction plan agreement. But he insisted that his party wouldn't agree to cuts that would undermine the elderly and middle-class workers.

"We're not going to let the middle class carry the whole burden. We will sacrifice. But they must be in on the deal," Biden said in a speech at the Ohio Democratic Party's annual dinner.

Biden led efforts on a deficit-reduction plan but Republicans pulled out of the discussions last week, prompting President Barack Obama to take control of the talks.

The sides disagree over taxes. Democrats say a deficit-reduction agreement must include tax increases or eliminate tax breaks for big companies and wealthy individuals. Republicans want huge cuts in government spending and insist on no tax increases.

On tax breaks for the wealthy, Biden used the example of hedge fund managers who "play with other people's money."

"And they get taxed," Biden said. "I'm not saying they don't do good things, they do some good things. But they get taxed at 15 percent because they call it capital gains. Because they're investing not their money, (but) other people's money."

To ask senior citizens receiving Medicare to pay more in taxes when people earning more than $1 million a year receive a substantial tax cut "borders on immoral," the vice president said.

"We're never going to get this done, we're never going to solve our debt problem if we ask only those who are struggling in this economy to bear the burden and let the most fortunate among us off the hook," Biden said.

Republican leaders say without a deal cutting long-term deficits, they will not vote to increase the nation's borrowing – which will exceed its $14.3 trillion limit on Aug. 2. The Obama administration has warned that if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling, it would lead to the first U.S. financial default in history and roil financial markets around the globe.

Obama and Biden are scheduled to meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Monday. McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, say no agreement can include tax increases.

Biden assailed moves by GOP governors in Wisconsin and Ohio to strip away collective bargaining rights from most public workers while criticizing efforts by Republicans in Congress to alter the Medicare program. He defended Obama's handling of the economy, pointing to difficult decisions on an economic stimulus package and the rescue of U.S. automakers.

Ahead of Biden's visit, Republicans countered that Obama's policies led to GOP gains in 2010 and have failed to revitalize the economy.

"All the visits in the world from President Obama, Vice President Biden and other top-level surrogates won't change the administration's job-killing policies," said Republican National Committee spokesman Ryan Tronovitch.

Biden, who spoke frequently of his blue-collar roots in Scranton, Pa., during the 2008 presidential race, is expected to be a frequent visitor to the Midwest during next year's campaign.

Obama won states such as Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania in 2008. But those states elected Republican governors in 2010 and are considered prime targets for Republicans next year.

Looking ahead to 2012, Biden called Ohio "the state that we must win and will win."

The Republican party absolutely refuses to look at what is working in other countries, like Germany, Canada, and Denmark, countries that have higher educational and health care outcomes, didn't suffer the huge setbacks from the financial recession, and whose people have a higher quality of living. Nope, they want us to model ourselves after countries that have high poverty rates, low quality of life, and a  Read More...

Hey seniors!! Wake up! You "DO NOT" have a friend among the current crop of politicians. Obama, Biden, Romney, Bachman.., Boener..., the AARP..... are selling you down the river. Have you noticed how "little" coverage you receive from Medicare? Have you been trying to make ends meet with the diminishing volume and value of dollars you receive from Social Security? Are you simply astounded that these charlatans who claim to be sooo concerned for your well being ..... continue to "Tax" your Social Security and Pension benefits..., cut reimbursements to your doctor (leaving you to make up the ever increasing difference)... and Tax your IRA withdrawal as regular income... for every dime they can get!?

I haven't seen one yet.., but if a candidate arises who addresses THESE issues - issues that concern senior citizens, they'll be overwhelmingly swept into office.

Wake up, seniors!!! Your "vote" is valuable. Do NOT relinquish your vote to fraudulent organizations and/or people who claim to speak for you but do NOTHING of consequence to benefit you.

Obama is turning it around? Please, the real number of unemployment is double digits. You people who listen to lame tv are brainwashed with what the social progressive propagandists are dishing you. Why would you suppose entire networks don't tell the news and only bash conservatives?

Legislation is the art of compromise.
06:20 PM on 06/28/2011
The Democrats, for the most part, will not compromise on a budget that harms the middle and lower classes, which encompasses the populace, while the Republicans will not compromise on a budget that will prick the rich slightly in the short-term. The result: congressional deadlock and the risk of the world economy faltering.

I had an abortion when I was young (18) and in a bad marriage. My husband at the time said he didn't want the child. 5 years later and after we divorced I met a wonderful man who I have been married to for 22 years and we have 4 wonderful children. I always wonder about that child I aborted, although I know the bad life he/she would have gone through. With that said, I am pro-life and understand pro-choice if you HAVE to. I think that a woman should be allowed 1 abortion and no more. These women who have 2 and more abortions are a joke! 20 weeks is a generous amount of time to make this decision. If a woman can't make up her mind by the time she is 5 months pregnant then I have to question her ability to make rational decisions or question her lifestyle. I think a man should have a say in the matter as well. If a man can be proven to be able to provide a good life with a stable home then he should be able to have HIS child and have custody and in turn for taking care of herself while pregnant and giving birth the woman can be free of child support. A man can love a baby just as much as a woman and can be as excited about the coming child as well as an expectant mother. Just my opinion.

Well, it's a good thing your opinion doesn't matter. The constitution protects the right to privacy and any other woman's reproductive decisions are none of your business.

And you must not pay taxes to support the lack of practiced birth control or for gov. funded abortions. If I have to pay for someone's abortion or someone elses offspring then I think it's my business.

Speaking of the Contittution; Do you recall the guarantee of "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". These words are fundamental rights for all Americans and are probably the most important expression.
The "Life" guarantee is one of the reasons some are actually opposed to "Choice" or abortion. Abortion denies that person life. That's why "the when does life begin" arguement is germaine to this issue and privacy is not a consideration of many pro-lifers. Every Pro-lifer a relgious zealots trying to impose on someones privacy. Many just believe in the Constitution and feel the R v. W Supreme Court ruling was an error by the Court.
By the way, all opinions matter in this Country; even yours.

I am pro-choice. I firmly believe in a woman's right to decide if she will continue a pregancy or not. There are many reasons that a woman may choose to have an abortion that has nothing to do with an unintended pregancy due to carelessness. I will continue to fight for that right.

That being said. I have a problem with anti-abortionists who believe in exceptions for rape or incest. If you truly believe that life begins at conception and those cells are human beings, what makes children conceived due to rape and incest any less human, less worthy of life? They had no choice in the matter, what makes their life less precious? If you really have a strong conviction the only exception should be to save the life of the mother, because one way or the other a life will be lost. Are you anti-abortion or only anti-abortion if you agree that that particular baby is too tainted to live?

Also, I resent anti-abortionists presenting themselves as the only group that is "pro-life". We are all "Pro-life" Even we who believe in the right to choose are "pro-life". An abortion is a gut wrenching last resort decision that no woman takes lightly. Those of us who are pro-choice are absolutely pro-life. We just understand that sometimes painful decisions have to be made and it shouldn't be the state or federal government making those most personal decisions for us.

Every voter who believes that stopping the tax breaks for the rich and big businesses should contact their members of Congress and let them know that is how you feel. I have. If enough of us do, and remind them that we will remember how they vote when they run fo re-election, we might make a difference. Heck, they are there to represent us, not just the wealthy!

"confiscate"

We pay taxes willingly because we use roads, public buildings, dams, public parks and other things.

Greed considers taxes a theft because greed does not understand altruism and living in a society.
05:39 PM on 06/29/2011
SS, re you aware that President Obama did try to pass 'pay as you go'? Strange thing, the Republicans would NOT support it!

There appears to be a big difference between you and I. I happen to believe that I should pay my fair share to live in the greatest Nation. I understand that we must pay for the benefits we receive.

Clearly, you want a free ride. Let others pay your way.

To ask senior citizens receiving Medicare to pay more in taxes when people earning more than $1 million a year receive a substantial tax cut "borders on immoral," the vice president said.

This doesn't "border on immoral" it IS immoral.
08:28 PM on 06/27/2011
It is IMMORAL that the Politicians in Government, can CONFISCATE OVER 50% of what people earn and "redistribute" that wealth to those who will keep them in power.

True. I guess it's a good thing that doesn't happen, huh? The rich just need to pay their fair share of the taxes - without tax breaks - just like the rest of us.

Not saying what you are saying is not true. I happen to think the reason Obama has refused to put forth a budget is only political. It has already cost him his job. There are a few that would argue this point but they know I am correct as always.

Why is this story still here? And why are libs defending this guy? He never apologized for his blatant lie about FDR. The circumstance was Biden claiming that President Bush was not doing enough about the minor recession that was beginning during his last year in office. Biden said that, in 1929, when the stock market crashed and the depression began, the "great" President Roosevelt quickly got on national TV and addressed the nation, putting the public's minds at ease. And Roosevelt must have been "great" to do this in 1929, because he wasn't president until 1933. Also, while there was limited television broadcasting in major cities in 1929, there was no nationwide tv until the mid-30s. Such an obvious and blatant lie is reprehensible. But, of course, if you did not see if live, as I did, you probably never saw it on liberal news.

Because, unlike an republican in office, Biden is fighting for the rights of the middle and lower classes. He has said some stupid things, yes, but he's fighting for those of us who need to be fought for. This was an error - it happens. I don't care as much about that as I do about the man doing his JOB!!!
