Gay Pride 2011: Marches And Celebrations Around The World (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 06/26/11 10:59 AM ET   Updated: 08/26/11 06:12 AM ET

Friday night's legalization of same-sex marriage in New York isn't just being hailed as a major victory for the Empire State, but has also emboldened lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists and their allies around the world.

As the Associated Press is reporting, many Parisian revelers demanded that France follow New York's lead as they marched under a sea of rainbow-colored flags and jigged to thumping techno beats in a gay pride parade on Saturday. Despite the festivities, the mood was bittersweet in France, where lawmakers had rejected a bill seeking to legalize same-sex marriage despite growing public support for gay rights a mere two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, in demonstrations across Germany, Israel, Mexico and even Russia -- where 14 gay rights activists trying to hold an unsanctioned rally in St. Petersburg were reportedly detained -- New York's legalization wasn't too far from everyone's mind, and many hoped it would be just the start. "The state of New York isn't the United States, unfortunately," 26-year-old German marcher Frederick Hartwig is quoted as saying. "The great victory for the United States will be when the middle of America — the middle of nowhere — will allow everyone to have such rights."

Take a look at gay pride celebrations around the world below:

Wow, the photos really speak for themselves. When you look at someone and cannot tell their gender, that should tell you plenty.

An irrelevant statement if ever there was one, but since its coming from the person who equates homosexuality to having sex with animals, I can't say that I am surprised.

I know plenty of people who are naturally androgynous. What about them? Are you suggesting that we ought to judge only those that do not fit the stereotype of masculine or feminine? There are plenty of gay people who can walk right past you and you will never know. Are they okay?

I am very happy that NY finally passed the law for legalized marriage. GOD made everyone who they are and as they are. They do not have a choice and cannot turn it on or off to please others. There are many LGBT people out there who you do not even know are LGBT, doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, bus drivers, mail people and the whole thing was about equality and being able to benefit from a partners hard work. My mom and her partner have been together 40+ years and have raised 3 kids, put us through college and have been a wonderful parental unit. They NEVER flaunted their relationship on anyone but now after their marriage after a few yrs ago can now allow them to benefit from the pension, the life insurance and the things that only married couples can benefit from. LGBT buy homes, pay taxes, frequent businesses and put their pants on the same way as a heterosexual person does. What they do in the privacy of closed doors.....is thier business. I Love my mom and her partner......who in fact was a better "dad" then my own dad!

"GOD made everyone who they are and as they are", so the alcoholic should not get arrested for druck driving, the clepto should not be charged after stealing something. Remember you said "God made everyone who they are and as they are"

Drunk driving and stealing are illegal. Being homosexual is not. Understand the difference?

There is really no comparison. Yes God make alcoholics who they are too but they can change, they choose to get behind the wheel of a car and drive and a kleptomaniac chooses to steal. Being gay is NOT a crime......only in the eyes of the ignorant.

Sounds pretty pridulant to me. Thanks for sharing, and caring.

Sorry to bother you but I have on operation I need to perform called a shrink and wrap. Just finished (not entirely true) one a few minutes ago, and I 'm feeling one of those urge things that' telling the shop isn't quite ready to close and get their usual non payment in cash and other useless forms of entertainment like beads and space shutlle launches yet, Would you for once give me a seat that isn't clearly labelled as pit. I know they're easy to get into and out of and eternally guaranteed; I know the last part for sure because I've been there! There are some themostat issues. It's damnably hot on occasion. As recently as yesterday when I was at Rush Limbaughs little house, the one you see on TV from time to time when he wants to do his jellyfish dance.

Anyways see you again the next time I'm at Rush Limgaughs house!

lol

hugs and kisses

The Croatia photo must be from the Pride celebration in Zagreb; this year marked the first pride in Split, the second-largest city, and the parade was met with anger from citizens there. It was sad to see those images.

Your approach is nothing short of sad. Do you have anything of substance to say or are you just here to make juvenile comments?

Words from my high school physics teacher: It should only matter to you if someone else is gay if you are sitting on their lap.

Or if you are sharing a beverage with them. After all, you have a pretty good idea where their mouth has been.

The world is not, NOT,going to run out of people of gays marry. This and so many other lies are just a product of the rightwing republican relegious movement. It is a despreat attemt to discredit gays and to put them in a bad light. It is a despreat act. And one that does not fool intelligent people. Oh yes, weak minded, frightened little people beleive it. People who are vunerable to the brainwaashing techniques of the fundies and evangelical cult leaders. This is why they prey on the weak. People who are hurting, out of work, uneducated, suffering from abuse, people who live in poverty, in a helpless and hopeless state of being. These people, who are despreat for an easy answer. They are easily vicitimzed by the right wing movment. And easily duped into believeing their nonsense. Becasue they want an easy out of their suffering. And the right wing funides are only to happy to promise them a Utopia, Free of anxiety and worrry, in exchange for thier votes, thier money and thier souls.

Ministers ( and i use the word very loosley) like Pat Robertson and Jerry Farwell and others in the right wing fuindimentilist / evangelical movement are fascist. They want to create an utopia where the USA is only white, straight and christian. And they do this with fear and violence. They are no better, maybe worse, then the cult leaders. Leaders like Rev (HAHA) Moon, Jim Jones and David Koresh. They want to destory the USA and the democratic process. They are anti - labor union, anti- public schools and anti- women's rights. They are also anti- freedom of relegion. Thus they are anti- USA Constitution. How much more anti- American can you get?

There is nothing in the constitution that sanctions homosexuality. Get a clue.

There is nothing in it that says free the slaves or give votes to women.

Please tell me where in the Constitution is homosexuality repudiated or disallowed.

I don't think the Constitution distinguishes sexual orientation.

All I can say is that I have kown since I was five years old that I was gay. I am now 72. I have never been prouder of a legislative body than I am of New York's Republucan dominated Senate, and NYC's mayor Andrew Cuomo. Let's show our appreciation in the most positive of ways, including a little understanding of those who believe differently. It will get us a lot further, than ostracizing them. We need to bring as many previously homophobic people into the fold with an opportunity like this.

Then you might, or might not ve transgendered. The phenomenon is way more frequent than most realize. If a person puts on "airs", I think it is often a sign of angry behavior, the proverbial "finger". Then some just really find it fun to get in drag and be silly. Doesn't appeal to me, but who am I I to judge what it takes for someone else to have fun, as long as they are hurting no one.

Great. Now gays can marry, they can raise kids, they can hold office, they can run corporations...they are now just like other minority groups which have mainstreamed (Irish, Italians...).

Now move on...
12:20 PM on 06/27/2011
Homosexuality is not a race or ethnic group. Let's not confuse the two demographics.

Yes, we come from ALL races and ALL religions and ALL walks of life. But we are a marginalized group. Many of us beloing to churches that WANT to marry us but our governments (prodded by powerful mega churches like the Mormons) forbid it. Skin color is just one way people discriminate. Hateful people always find someone to despise so they don't have to look at the ugliness in their own hearts.
