Nigeria: Bomb Attacks In Northeast Borno State Kill At Least 25, Police Blame Boko Haram

NJADVARA MUSA   06/26/11 08:15 PM ET   AP

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Men riding motorcycles threw bombs into outdoor beer gardens Sunday night in northeastern Nigeria, killing at least 25 people in attacks bearing striking similarities to others carried out by a radical Islamic sect in the region, police said.

The bombs exploded in the restive city of Maiduguri, home to the sect known locally as Boko Haram. While the sect did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack late Sunday, the assault bore the hallmarks of the group now waging assassinations and attacks against the Nigerian government.

The bombs exploded around 5 p.m. at several outdoor beer gardens in Maiduguri, which is about 540 miles (870 kilometers) from Nigeria's capital, Abuja. Borno state, where Maiduguri is the capital, is under Muslim Shariah law, but several outdoor beer gardens exist.

Lawal Abdullahi, a spokesman for the federal Nigeria Police Force, said the bombs struck at least three beer parlors in the state.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, wants the implementation of strict Shariah law across Nigeria's north. The group claimed responsibility for an attack that killed at least two people at the federal police headquarters earlier this month in Abuja.

Nigeria, a nation of 150 million people, is divided between the Christian-dominated south and the Muslim north. A dozen states across Nigeria's north already have Shariah law in place, though the area remains under the control of secular state governments.

Boko Haram is responsible for a rash of killings which have targeted police officers, soldiers, politicians and clerics in Nigeria's north over the last year – including attacks at local beer parlors. They have also attacked churches and engineered a massive prison break. However, authorities say attacks intensified after April 26 gubernatorial elections kept the same political party in power.

Boko Haram was thought to be vanquished in 2009 after Nigeria's military crushed its mosque into concrete shards, and its leader was arrested and died in police custody. But now, Maiduguri and surrounding villages in Borno state again live in fear.

"boko haram" means.."all non-islamic education is sin"..or more strictly, all western education is sin...
hmm...where is all that tolerance stuff? and who decides what is a proper islamic education?
this is an example of militant salafism...or a zealot's concept of returning islam to that of the first generation in application...militant, strict, closed. it has grown largely from writing of such at Qtub in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. and more-or-less doetails into the intolerant isloationism of the wahhabi sect long allied with and funded by the Suadis, (except true wahhabi's wage militant jihad only when also approved by the secular authorities). the closest modern equivalents I can think of would probably be the true believer SS nazi types and the
hard core commies of the stalinist stripe., a tendency toward a personality cult ( some current
holy leader-type) and a narrow & strict fundamentalism as test for orthodoxy.

What are they afraid of? If their way is the correct way, then there shouldn't be a need to coerce* people into following and obeying. There wouldn't be a need to keep some people ignorant (uneducated).

*coercion in the form of terror.

the radical muslims of whatever stripe share one comon thread...their isolation.
they insist that to be pure they must prevent outside influences and particularly western ideas of democracy and rule of law and individual rights from entering their closed world.
a good book on this is "the wahhabi mission and saudi arabia" which explores the wahhabi view which has been very influential with taliban and elsewhere as it enjoys the monetary support of saudi oil money all around the arab world..and in some areas of the USA also.

is a movement among muslims now called Salafism...
the notion is to re-restabish a purer form of islam by following
what is believed to be the way of the first generation of muslims.
it is focused in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and some spinoffs.
It is taking various forms depending on local leadership and practice,
but it would blow up beer halls and generally permit opium dens...just
check out levels of addiction in pakistan where a related group, wahhabism
is strong. infidels, women, jews, shia' muslims in particular would
suffer. Sharia law would be their ideal...of course, a problem with
sharia law is that it is often not clear, is disupted, and varies in practice,
but tends to a level of 7th century conquest and control type of thinking.

This is a religion that allah first allowed worshippers to put down their beer before praying then continue after, then allah changed his mind and now banned drinking. allah indeed knows best. And this is what people call creator? a man's idea of what's god 1500 years ago.

Yes, I know, it was early, I messed up. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a "delete post" button anywhere, if there is, I haven't found it.

I meant to say that something like "we have no economic interests in this conflict."

China also has humanity disaster: Chinese government has a weapon to make person feel feared, nervous and fatigued which needn’t touch him/her. I am often attacked by this weapon which may be something to purge my mind. The goal of it is to control, hurt even murder someone in order to get rid of dissident and seize power. Be careful about it!

It's horrible that this happened and I hope the survivors are doing ok. It's interesting that this is a region where there are serious conflicts and corruption over oil.
