Seagull Steals Camera: Take A Birds' Eye View Of Cannes (VIDEO)

Seagull Steals Camera Video

First Posted: 06/26/11 12:15 PM ET Updated: 08/26/11 06:12 AM ET

Fly like a seagull?

Now you can. In this viral video, an unassuming seagull meanders up to a tourist in Cannes, France, only to fly away with his rolling camera. The unlikely theft leads to a majestic journey through the air, highlighting the intricacies of flight and a beautiful perspective from above. The bird eventually lands on a castle wall, where the camera's owner says he recovered the device.

Cool as it is, not everyone is sold. Seeing as the camera is a GoPro and the company that manufactures the GoPro is known for its viral video campaigns, some folks can't help but be skeptical.

"Probable conclusion," according to Mashable: "After scores of action videos featuring snowboarders and daredevils, apparently GoPro has branched out into skillfully produced simulated Seagull Cams. Brilliant."

Or as one YouTube commenter put it, "I am convinced this was uploaded by the seagull."

Do you think this seagull actually has a thieve's eye for digital cameras? Let us know in the comment section below.

your dogs don't know nothing. My dogs didn't bark. How much is ProGo paying you to comment?

The sounds were real - but the video was probably taken with a model helicopter and edited. The big problem is why would someone set down the video camera in the dark, still filming, and walk away.

The GoPro people have got to track him down for an endorsement deal! But let this be a lesson: Don't leave your GoPro unattended. Those things cost a buck or two.

How much did gopro pay you for your comment. I am an ornithologist. 1) Seagulls don't feed at night or for that matter they rarely fly at night. 2) The odds that the camera would swing in a beautiful panoramic view of the city while dangling from the strap are ZZZZEEERROOO. Wake up.
02:11 PM on 06/27/2011
So let's see if we can get this correct: (1) you're an ornithologist, who (2) also happens to have STUDIED CGI/animation for FIFTEEN years, (3) generally think of yourself as an expert** on pretty much any topic (including the interplaying physics of a seagull, the wind, flight, image stabilization, and small square objects), and lastly (4), have a major axe to grind with this ProGo company. Am I vaguely on track?

**NOTE: those cameras don't have a strap unless you're using the wrist housing/mount, which leads me to believe you're not familiar with this camera (ie. you've never used one)...but as mentioned above, you're an expert, so, of course, you wouldn't actual ever need to SEE/USE one to make bold, absolute assertions about the nature of any and all videos on YouTube.

Easy there, bro. I'm just a surfer and satisfied GoPro user (actually my son now uses it after I got my jollies). The seagulls in Malibu certainly do fly at night and raid the trash cans at the local high school all night long. I don't know about French seagulls, but I'll bet the food in the trash is way better than my neighborhood. As for the beautiful, panoramic view, I've noticed that gulls tend to fly very smoothly. Plus the GoPro has excellent image stabilization. I've never seen one with a strap either. Now if the bird didn't swipe the camera, what shot the very low altitude footage -- at night -- over a very densely populated area? A helicopter? An ultralight?

Oh Jonathan Livingston, where did you go wrong? What's next, filching wallets from the gull-able? (Yes I did too do that!)

No cameras were harmed in the process of faking this video. It is just another ProGo forgery. hoohummm.

Seagulls steal food, and it is strange to see one flying through a city at night (vampire seagull?)
Not very believable.

they don't fly at night and they don't feed at night. FAKE!!

I had a gull steal a brick of cheese and pepperoni. It was on a balcony and I went inside for something and when I came back, the treats were gone. So, it could steal a camera. The cheese was dropped on a roof but we never saw what happened to the link of pepperoni.

I once had a seagull drop a clam on my head and knock me off my bike. I had no idea what had happened, until I looked at the bike path I had been riding on and it was littered with broken clams. It was a prime spot for seagull drop and snack.

I believe a seagull could be trained to carry the camera up to the castle and drop it. So was it seasgullcam? I think so. Was it completely and totally a natural act? Probably not. It was probably staged.
