'Brave' Trailer: Pixar's New Film, With Merida, Female Hero, Reveals Teaser (VIDEO)

Hot off the opening weekend box office success of "Cars 2," Disney Pixar has unveiled the first teaser trailer for their next big film, the 2012-scheduled, "Brave."

And while "Cars 2" is a fun sequel of the 2006 film, "Brave" is groundbreaking territory for the hallowed CGI studio.

The film, about a Scottish warrior princess named Merida, is the first from Pixar to feature a female lead, let alone one that breaks the mold of most of Disney's beloved princesses (though Mulan was also a warrior princess). Voiced by Kelly Macdonald, the film also features Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Billy Connolly and Craig Ferguson.

Right off the bat, we take in the beautiful Scottish countryside and the majestic castle lording over it, and meet Merida, who reveals her grit with a bow and arrow.

Late last week, the poster for the film was revealed.

Here's the synopsis:

Brave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).

Love it or hate it, obviously Pixar is doing something right with hit after hit. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing it with my grandson.

It will be interesting to see if my son likes it. He loved Cars and Cars 2. He liked Up. He didn't like Ratatouille, because it was too much character development and not enough action (shooting rats, chasing rats with knives, etc.).

I hope the soundtrack has some bagpipes. What's a movie about Scotland without bagpipes?

I'm sure I'll love it. It is Pixar but I'm still waiting for my Incredibles sequel. One of my top 10 films of all time and in my opinion the best Pixar film next to Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo.

yeah, and I would argue Mrs. Incredible was Pixar's first female warrior :-)

Pixar re-invents Wheel. Millions awed.
Not so sure about the character design. But I've learned to never underestimate the lords of Emeryville...

Look a little too 'Mulanish' for me. Question: why have the hair on the horse's legs so amazingly ultra-real (for example) and yet the face of the girl looks like a goofy pie-faced cartoon with impossibly big day-glo red hair? The backgrounds are gorgeous but this would be more 'ground-breaking' if they decided to make the characters less like McDonald's meal toys.

They have to be like McDonalds meal toys; the licensing rights are already sold.

Typical Disney....Kill a mother. I guess we'll find out that the Bear was a mother Bear protecting her cub and "Brave" is actually about the Cub having to grow up with out its mother.
Kinda like other disney classics: Bambi, Dumbo. What does Disney have against mothers? Cinderella / Snow White and Step Mothers: Cinderella / Snow White / Tangled.

walt disneys mother died before she saw him become successful and succeed so all of his characters had the same destiny, their mothers died and they then would go on and succeed.

Walt Disney bought a house for his parents following his enormous success with Snow White. So his mother lived to see her son famous and weathy. Right after that, however, his mother perished in the house due to a faulty heating system.
