Darnell Dockett Live Tweets Police Encounter: Cops Pull Over Cardinals DT

First Posted: 06/27/11 04:24 PM ET Updated: 08/27/11 06:12 AM ET

There aren't many NFL players who like to speak their minds more than Arizona's Darnell Dockett.

The Cardinals defensive tackle was pulled over by police on Monday and has refused to allow them to search his car without a warrant.

How do we know? Because he decided to live tweet the police encounter.

"I don't know why the police always messing w/me I'm never gonna let them search my car with out a search warrant! No matter what!" he tweeted earlier this afternoon.

Dockett wrote that the cops asked to search his car. After he refused, he tweeted that an officer said he would call back up.

"I said u wanna use my phone?" Dockett wrote.

Scroll down to check out how the rest of the altercation went.

"I do not give consent to searches."
"Am I being detained or am I free to go?"'
"I don't allow home searches without a warrant."
I learned all this from flexyourrights.org, check it out or check them out on youtube.

I'm with him. The law is the law. Police too often take advantage of ordinary citizens' ignorance of their rights.

Cops are allowed to lie about your rights. It's your job to learn them and then sue their butts off when they violate them.

Good for Darnell.....same thing happened to me in Arkansas on I-40.

Cop said i was driving on white solid line and i told him he was lying...he asked what kind of work i did because i was driving a very nice SUV. When i told him he asked me for a job....no joke

Good for him. He knows his rights.

Never let a cop search your car without a warrant. And they aren't going to be more lenient if you testify against yourself.

These illegal searches have become so common in New Orleans, defense attorneys don't even bring up the Fourth Amendment in court. It's as if this constitutional protection never existed. The only people who don't get pulled over and searched without cause are affluent looking, mostly white, older people.

Policy officers... This had nothing to do with law... Just harassment, an attempt to extort money from the populace.

For non black readers of huffpost, black people are usually handcuffed and their vehicle searched for any and every driving infraction. I was pulled over for various resasons, going 10 miles over the limit, a busted taillight, expired registration, suspicion of a drive by even, and every single time i was handcuffed and sat on the ground while my car was searched. Only once (expired registration) was I actually ticketed. So when non blacks hoot and holler about "race cards" and affrimative action, know that people who look like you, they invented these things, not us.

If your post is true, why haven't you sued the police for violating your civil rights?

how is that logical? Is suing someone the sign of truthfulness? Thus anytime you don't sue, you are not being honest?

I don't doubt it. As a Truck Driver, several years ago traveling the I95 Corridor from Houlton, Maine to Miami, I can recall 2 states on the East Coast where I would consistently see black people sitting on the side of the highway, while the Police searched their vehicles. Rhode Island, and Virginia. I'm curious if this has changed, or it sounds more likely that it has spread to more states. Is the KKK wearing the badges in these states, or what?

Thankfully, RI has begun to change. They were sued, found guilty of "profiling" - but it's still not good. It's embarrassing, at the least. God forbid you're Driving While Black in a nice car, through RI. Plan for an extra 30 - 45 mins travel. Darryl, Darryl and Larry still have badges. Be patient, please. I'm doing what I can to improve things!

It works both ways. Years ago a girlfriend of mine and I, who are both "white" were driving home from Disneyland. We were from a small town and got lost on the way home, ending up in a "black" neighborhood. Two cops pulled up next to us, smiled and waved, then pulled us over. We asked why we were being pulled over and they said "GP" (general purposes I later learned). The took us in, locked us up in separate rooms until they went to our apartment building where they found my friend's little brother and parents, and came back and let us go. We were held for at least four hours. Thank god the Winnie the Pooh we had bought at Disneyland was still in the car when we got back. Later in life I figured they thought we must have been hookers, driving around with Winnie the Pooh.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. But while it may work both ways, I'm willing to bet everything I have that it happens one way a LOT more than the other. That doesn't make either way right, but it certainly makes things different.
