First Posted: 06/27/11 09:10 AM ET   Updated: 08/27/11 06:12 AM ET

If you're fighting the urge to nap on your desk after lunch, then maybe that midday cup of coffee just isn't cutting it. Stave off the afternoon slump by swapping your caffeine for one of these five light, low-cal bites. They'll fight fatigue and keep you going between meals.

1/2 Cup Sliced Banana (Or A Small Apple) With 1 Tablespoon Peanut Butter

Midday snacks should contain about 100 calories or 15 grams of carbohydrates. The natural sweetness in fruit takes longer to metabolize than the processed sugars you'll find in candy. And the protein in peanut butter provides a long-lasting form of energy.

i carry water with me constantly -- its amazing how much water you drink when you don't regulate it. I think it helps you regulate other things -- you never think "hmmm, im thirsty" and head for the coke machine. .

Also of interest, the picture associated with the link to this article shows a big "X" over Four LOKO cans... so "If you're fighting the urge to nap on your desk after lunch" by drinking Four LOKO, you've got bigger problems than just sleepiness.

lol -- i always thought that was funny with americans. most cultures have no problem with a little something with your lunch. before lunch a fourloko would be frowned on though. of course most cultures would never give snooki a television show. don't drink unless you binge so hard you wake up in your own vomit, the american way.

Slide 3: "Too many carbs can cause low blood sugar, resulting in mid-afternoon sleepiness."

HUH?! Eating carbohydrates causes HIGH BLOOD SUGAR. Ask any diabetic.

Better advice would be to avoid the blood sugar (and resulting insulin) spike by not eating sugary foods like... oh, I don't know... processed peanut butter like that in the picture, nonfat yogurt, dried fruit, protein bars with 3 teaspoons of sugar and crackers.

Who wrote this crap?

Well it can spike your blood sugar, which then crashes. I think that's what they meant. But this article is junk. Lots of misinformation. Fructose does break down slower than sucrose, but not by any large difference. "Whole grain" crackers are are rarely better than normal ones, much like most "whole wheat" bread isn't better than plain white bread. And the article ignores the fact that different proteins break down at vastly different rates.

Total junk. I knew that's what they were going for, but I had to complain - that's a pretty big error in an article about health.

My vegan version of yogurt/granola is my breakfast: real old-skool oatmeal, a splash of rice milk (sinfully delicious), blueberries (or other berries), banana, some cinnamon, ginger and poppy seeds, almond slivers and cashews (or other nuts). Keeps me satiated for hours.
