Obama's Approval On Jobs Falls To Less Than A Quarter Of Americans: Harris Interactive

Obama Job Approval

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/29/11 06:14 PM ET Updated: 08/29/11 06:12 AM ET

With a little over a year until the presidential election, Barack Obama's hopes for a second term increasingly depend on how Americans view his handing of the unemployment crisis -- and that view is only getting worse.

In fact, a substantial majority of Americans now view President Obama's ability to deal with the jobs crisis negatively, a recent poll by Harris Interactive finds. Surveying 2,163 adults between June 13-20, Harris Interactive reports that 74 percent of Americans view President Obama's work on jobs to be "poor" or "only fair."

Just 24 percent of those polled said he had done an "excellent job" or a "pretty good" job, falling from 29 percent when a similar poll was taken in February.

And the negative views don't fall strictly along party lines, either. While just 6 percent of Republicans gave him a rating of "excellent" or "pretty good," well below half of surveyed Democrats (42 percent) gave him a positive rating on jobs. Independents fell in the middle, as 17 percent thought his efforts to lower unemployment have been positive.

President Obama did however score better in other areas especially within his own party. 65 percent of Democrats said he had done a good job in the Middle East, compared to 38 percent total. Obama received his strongest ratings from Republicans on the environment, with 13 percent rating his efforts positively compared to 37 percent total.

Despite some pockets of approval, Obama's inability to create jobs could hurt him during his reelection campaign create jobs. While his work on the environment and the success of Osama bin Laden's assassination may be helpful come election day, a high unemployment rate could vastly reduce his reelection chances.

Indeed, a United States President has not been reelected with an unemployment rate above 7.2 percent since World War II.

Conservative says that government doesnt create jobs, then get mad at the president for not creating jobs

Conservatives say that lowering taxes will create jobs, taxes have been low for 10 years, and bush created essentially 0 net jobs

Taxes are low compared to what? In India and China the corporate tax rate is 10% or lower. Here it is 35%. I'll stack American productivity up against anywhere else, especially when you factor in the time difference to coordinate the remote "support center" with the home office, poor retention rates, and the overwhelming investment in training that it takes to bring someone up to speed in India. But the difference in the tax rate is often the deciding factor. If a corporation recognize the profit at the Indian facility and be taxed much less, it will!

No, Government jobs don't grown the economy, private sector jobs do.

Until America is serious about wanting business back as a partner, it won't see the job growth necessary to get this economoy moving again. And that IS the repsonsibility of the Administration.

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2011/03/ten_giant_us_companies_avoidin.html

Big corporations pay an effective tax rate of much much much less than 35%, so that is not the reason why they outsource. they outsource because the wages are a third over or less over there for the same jobs. I work for an Indian IT company, and one of our off shore resources came to america for 45 days. He told me that in those 45 days in America he was paid half of his YEARLY salary. I know first hand that most of the talented Indian workers come here, and the ones offshore are at times absolutely worthless, but why would anyone care, you can hire 4 of them for the price of 1 American, and because of their population, theirs an almost limitless supply (all Indian IT companies have absurd turnover as you said, I get emails every week about someone quitting)

The fact of the matter is tax rates mean absolutely nothing when corporations have armies of tax lawyers that find every deduction available. If you believe that taxes, and not wages are whats making people outsource, then you have been fooled

I knew America was in trouble when Obama surrounded himself with Jews at the beginning of his presidency. What will it take for Americans to realize they call themselves the chosen?
02:44 PM on 07/03/2011
The "Jews" are not the problem. It's his Chicago crony thugs that are the problem. He's surrounded himself with them, taken their lousy advice as gospel, and uses them as his scapegoats.
10:13 AM on 07/01/2011
It is these big corporations who recieve Extended Tax breaks on the promise to reach out and Hire Americans....The truth was fudged...who was hired??When do we hold these people accountable for their actions???The President can not make the "Fat Cats" Hire....(No one can make me spend the little money I have,If I do not want to)Believe it !!! no one going to suck up to me/ give me an incentive for spending my little money...This is were the problem is. Are we suppose to be at the mercy of these "Fat Cats"...We The People Elected President Obama because it was stinking. In Washington/Wall St./Main St..(Just Stanking) Our previous adminstration did this to US "Average Joe/Annie" who worked sense they were 14,16 or18;just making it;barely making ends meet.... hoping to buy and own her own piece of American Dream(whatever that may be)just to have all that hardwork disappear with no explanations...The President can not make these people Hire and they know this...So Why do we the People have to put up with their Bull$#*!!!

Your post would be easier to digest if you'd use spaces between your sentences. I'll "favorite" you because you are correct and, though it took me a while to read it, I'm assuming you were quite upset when posting it.

Jobs aren't coming back and it doesn't matter who is the president or who is in Congress. Our opportunity to keep those jobs by making it economically punitive to move somewhere else was lost. It's up to us as customers to make those jobs come back by boycotting companies that exploit workers in other countries.

For example, DemocracyNow reported on Haiti and the people's fight for a higher minimum wage. The minimum wage there was $1.75 a DAY and the workers were asking for $5 a day. Fruit of the Loom, Hanes, and Levis intervened and $3 a DAY is now the new minimum wage. This is where we are heading if we don't start working united for our own cause.

Make it "Economically punitive"? Yeah, that's a great idea. How about "Economically attractive" instead? We need to partner with business, and your philosopy is exactly what is wrong with America's ability to maintain a competitive advantage.

And now you'll tell me about all the injustice that American businesses perpetrate, and why they should be punished. Do you really think they need to stay here in that kind of atmosphere?

They aren't staying here now as long as CEOs are rewarded for sending jobs overseas. American workers work more hours now than ever before and they are the most productive workers in the world, but American businesses won't be happy until we are like Haiti working for $3 a day, courtesy of Fruit of the Loom, Hanes, and Levis. (They had been working for $1.75 and wanted $5.) Is that the kind of country you want?
09:40 AM on 07/01/2011
Maybe if he was actually working on jobs instead of out campaigning and begging for money people would be able to formulate a higher opinion.

But it's remarkably clear that the only job that he cares cabout is his own. Massive fail.

Why should Obama have to work on jobs? Bush didn't.
08:19 AM on 07/01/2011
Democrats and the left continue to blame bush policies and bush tax cuts for every thing, the problem is we have an election and Obama was elected as a president and he implemented his own policies that after two and half years failed miserably and 14 million people is unemployed and the economy is stagnant and on the verge of collapse again ,millions of middle and low income people lost their jobs and homes ,Obama economic policies of borrowing ,excessive spending and excessive regulations and high deficit is slowing economic growth and his attacks on republican and the rich and the class warfare he use will not solve any economic problem but shows his lack of leadership ,it is time for a new president that don't whine and blame and begin to work and have new solutions for US economic problems
09:41 AM on 07/01/2011
Obama got elected by blaming Bush for everything. He thought that he could sit on his duff and ride that same sentiment for four years without doing anywork.
11:12 AM on 07/01/2011
Whats your point?
05:48 AM on 07/01/2011
"Harris Interactive reports that 74 percent of Americans view President Obama's work on jobs to be "poor" or "only fair."

And yet there are more jobs today than there were when Obama was elected in January 2009..

131,555,000 in January 2009, and 131,753,000 in May 2011.

O's got a year and a half to get back the 4.4 jobs that Bush lost. But, in real numbers, there are 4,444,000 more jobs than there were a year and a half ago in January 2010 at the "trough" of the recession.
08:25 AM on 07/01/2011
No one care how many jobs he created compared to bush because at the end during Obama unemployment rate is 9.1%(14 million people is without jobs) while during bush the unemployment rate was 7% , your math and excuse is really dumb ,at the end it is all about how many people working not about how many jobs obama created which does not have any effect on economy or people lives
05:03 PM on 07/08/2011
Did you really say "14 million people IS without jobs"? lol.... You re right, there a re 14 million people without jobs, and the unemployment rate is higher. But you also forget that with almost 5 million jobs LESS back then, it is easier to keep a lower unemployement rate. The math is not stupid, its that ignorance makes it easy to fall for what the media says. See, omitting the number of jobs that have been added, makes it more dramatic. Just watch HLN and Fox news and you will see.
09:45 AM on 07/01/2011
And to think.... those 198,000 jobs only cost us $800,000,000,000 in stimulus funding.

That's over $4 million per job for those who are innumerate.

Pardon me for not being impressed.

Folks, here's what's going to happen, and I'll be glad to make a friendly little wager with anyone who wants.

Between now and the election lay sixteen months. In that time, I believe there will be another global economic shock. There are so many possibilities that saying "there will be another one" is almost a sure bet. Unemployment will not fall but will rise above 10%. We just need nine point-one increases, and there are sixteen opportunities between now and then. By election time, the GOP will have settled on a Romney/Bachmann ticket, and Obama will lose with a 52/48 split of the vote.

i think you are pretty spot on on the percentage. romney has the best shot at this point not to mention he has been through the rapid fire once before, bachmann though i am not sure she will make it. i think since palin was able to be abused so much by the media, it will be ok to run her through the ringer. 57 states is smart but whatever they gaff on will make the news every night.
