Strange Science: Menstruation Causes Prejudice?

Menstruation Prejudice

First Posted: 06/29/11 11:54 AM ET Updated: 08/29/11 06:12 AM ET

A new study suggests that depending on where they are in their menstrual cycles, women have very different reactions towards strange men. At their most fertile, women are more suspicious of men they see as outside of their social or racial group and who they perceive as being physically threatening. Which means that prejudice could, at least partially, be a byproduct of our biology.

Researchers from Michigan State University asked 252 college-age women -- 224 of whom were white and 28 of whom were black -- to complete an online test in which they quickly associated traits like muscularity with photos of men of both races. They also asked a smaller pool of women to complete a similar test, this time asking them to wear a t-shirt that was either red, blue or yellow and then evaluate men who were also assigned one of those three color groups.

The researchers found that when they were at their most fertile, women were increasingly biased against men in a group different from their own -- whether it was according to race, as in the first experiment, or according to t-shirt color, as in the second. Notably, this was only true of women who indicated that they saw the men as physically threatening.

"Studies have shown that people will more readily associate positive things within their own group," said Carlos David Navarrete, Ph.D, an assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University, who explained that the study was part of a broader effort to understand the various predictors of prejudice. "But the idea that this could shift across the menstrual cycle is pretty novel."

What the small study suggests is that in addition to learned biases, there could be something about women's biology that leads them to protect themselves against men who they believe pose a risk to them, sexually, at the time when they are most "at risk" of getting pregnant. In other words, when women are more likely to conceive a child, they are biologically driven to be more discriminating about who they are going to mate with. Without necessarily realizing it, they protect themselves against men who they believe endanger that choice.

Navarrete says that he was expecting to find that women who were at their most fertile were biased against so-called "out-group," i.e., racially different men they classified as physically imposing, particularly among the white female participants.

"There are deep histories of negative stereotyping of black men of being, perhaps, sexually coercive," he said. "These stereotypes have been around for centuries, so it wasn't too far of a stretch to think we'd see them here."

But he said the fact that women also showed bias in the colored t-shirt experiment was extremely surprising. It indicates that there doesn't need to be a particularly deep cultural history for the prejudice to exist and to fluctuate according to fertility. The women just need to see the men as different.

The study's lead author, Melissa McDonald, told Canada's Times Colonist that the study could be useful in helping get rid of bias.

"A lot of the research in social psychology is focused on biases and prejudice and racism [being] all culturally learned," she told the paper. McDonald added that the research suggests that at least a small part of our bias "is kind of ingrained" and that "the ways by which we could go about ameliorating this bias are going to have to take that into consideration."

But Navarrete chastened that people should not draw any sweeping conclusions from the study.

"It's way too soon to try and say what this really means out there in the real world," he told The Huffington Post. "It's just an interesting study for it's own sake, to try and map out what the predictors of prejudice are, using this bio-behavioral approach."

So...this sort of explains why male strangers and my male friends always run away when I pick up that Louisville Slugger....hmmmm....

Statistics wow! I have read other stats where women mated during there optimal fecundity to a genetically superior man as percieved by them. I have a very hard time with single causal relationships, these studies are being conducted by simple minded people.

Oh man that explains why I keep getting turned-down for dates by women....see i knew it wasn't because a) I wasn't their type, b) they were engaged, c) they were married , d) they had a BF, e) they had a GF, f) they had a BF & GF, g) they just weren't attracted to me, h) they really had to wash their hair that night...

....it was the menstural cycle all along....so tell me again how to recognize when women are not at the "heights" of their menstrual cycle so that I can have a better chance ?

The strange and weird Studies are motivate by a person or a group resembling Sigmund Freud who was obsessed and have fetish of the human body sexual organs and sexual events. There are future generations from the Freud’s DNA family tree existing in our world today. Sometimes graduate students, doctrine students and scientists perform few of these Studies. Several of the studies are not receiving funds and others are could be receiving a small amount of funds to pay their subjects to participate in the study. Therefore, next time you may needing reading paper for the privacy of your bathroom, please print out several of these studies and place them in the magazine rack..I guarantee it work better than a laxative.

Who in the heck would conduct a study on menstruating women for the purpose of prejudice? No one wants to be near a pre and the first two days depending on the individuals because of uncontrollable emotions and abnormal physical characteristics. You must be a dam fool or you enjoy receiving pain Sadist.

By the way, this study is a social psychology study: http://www.timescolonist.com/health/Fertile+women+more+prejudiced+against+strange+study+says/4995956/story.html?cid=megadrop_story

I was inclined to agree (especially about Freud, who labelled women's bodies "mutilated") until you got to the bit about not wanting to be near a premenstrual woman. Guess what - you're near premenstrual women every day and have presumably survived it. We do not all have such raging hormones, and plenty - I would guess most - of us have the maturity to deal with it when we do. Oh, and someone who enjoys their own pain is a masochist, not a sadist.

Oh how quaint! Here I was - all along - believing that women hated ALL men - ESPECIALLY their husbands or boyfriends - REGARDLESS of where they were in their menstrual cycle. Now when I get screamed at or bonked over my head with a lamp, all I have to do is check to see where my lady is in her cycle to determine if she really, really meant to do it or if she jusk kind of, sort of meant to do it. From now on, I shall consider myself to be BOTH informed AND enlightened! What a wonderful world....sigh.

The study was about reactions to strangers. So to study your situation, I guess you need couple therapy.

I suppose if I were a woman, I would find all male strangers somewhat threatening. Unfortunately too many men are just evil. I have had too many bad experiences. But thankfully I don't have to date men.

I certainly don't rate men as more or less potentially threatening according to where I am in my cycle. It has far more to do with the circumstances and their actions (such as sitting right next to me on a train when there are plenty of other seats).

I am always amazed at the anti-intellectual sentiments of my fellow readers. Scientific exploration is never a waste of money. Please stop trying to make the world a boring place.

Vilifying frivolous pseudo-science and not supporting it is not anti-intellectualism. Seems like we have one of those pseudo-intellectuals on our hands.

I would hardly call psychology and neuroscience "pseudo-sciences." However that is beside the point. What people like yourself fail to understand, is that there is just as much to be learned about human nature as there is any other aspect of our existence. You likely begin with the assumption that our pursuit of knowledge is a means to an end, this assumption is highly questionable. Even if this flawed assumption were true, this study is "usefull" because it can help us eliminate prejudice. I am sure people told Galileo he was wasting his time playing with telescopes, and that he should have focused on medicine. Please, give me one reason why a heliocentric solar model is more important for (most) people to know than the fact that menstruation increases prejudice? Please unpack your sentiments more. I am very curious about them.

I prefer guys who can stand upright, walk without dragging their knuckles behind them and can actually grunt more than three words. Unable to find that seems more annoying to me when one is at that time of the month. Tarzan where are you!

I am disgusted to learn that women are natural racists. How pathetic. I will take this info into consideration for future dealings with them.

you must remember that this is the "huffington post" and they have a way of twisting scientific articles to sound horrible. they once had an article stating you could get HPV from doorknobs, which is ridiculous. note how in the article it said, 'women are more suspicious of men they see as outside of their social or racial group and who they perceive as being physically threatening.' That does not mean they are racist, they are just fearful of strange men. Now we need the study as to why men are racist...man PMS?
