Tiger Woods Hired For TV Commercial Pitching Heat Rub Through Kowa Company In Japan

Tiger Woods Japanese Heat Rub Ad

NAGOYA, Japan — Tiger Woods has signed a three-year deal to promote a Japanese pain reliever, his first endorsement since he was caught in a sex scandal toward the end of 2009.

The deal with Kowa Company Ltd. is geared only toward the market in Japan. Woods already has filmed commercials for "Vantelin Kowa," a heat rub used to relieve muscle and joint pain. The commercial is to be shown in Japan starting next month.

"When looking for a person for a new TV commercial for the Vantelin Kowa series, Kowa determined that Tiger Woods, with his No. 1 accomplishment as a golfer and his overwhelming presence, matches the promotional direction of the Vantelin Kowa series," the company said in a press release. "And we asked Mr. Woods for his cooperation in our new TV commercial."

Mark Steinberg, his agent, said it was a three-year deal that involves television, print and Internet ads in Japan. He did not disclose how much the company is paying Woods.

Woods once had an endorsement portfolio worth nearly $90 million a year. But failures in his personal life led to Accenture, AT&T and Gatorade dropping him as a sponsor, and Gillette deciding not to renew its deal.

"I'm not looking at this as his first deal, or a second deal," Steinberg said Wednesday. "I look at this as showing he's a global attraction. I expect to have some other announcements by the balance of the year."

Steinberg said an endorsement for Woods' golf bag – he has been without one since he returned to golf at the 2010 Masters – was not necessarily the highest priority. He said he was in discussion with various companies, but any deal probably would wait until after Woods gets back to competition.

Woods has not played since May 12, when he withdrew after nine holes from The Players Championship with knee and Achilles injuries. He said Tuesday he had no timetable for his return, only that it would not happen until he was fully healthy.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is sidelined after elbow reconstruction surgery, has also promoted the Vantelin heat rub on Japanese TV.

This isn't the first time Woods has endorsed products in Japan. He appeared in commercials for canned iced coffee in the late 1990s.

Perhaps in his mind, a challenging statement to the rest of the tour 'I'm not done yet, I'm only 35'. It was evident to me that he was trying to instill fear in the other players on tour. Don't work any more, TW. Nobody fears you. And certainly not Jack Nicklaus and his 18 majors.

Woods trying to catch Nicklaus is somewhat like LeBron James continuing to allow statements being made that he's another Jordan. Both guys dead wrong. James is about 1/2 the player that Jordan was in his prime, and won't catch MJ's stature, ever. that was very glaring in the NBA Finals, where James disappeared in the fourth quarter of every game he played. Never would Jordan be a non factor. Same with Woods, altho his fans are all of an age not to have seen Nicklaus play, while many fans of Jordan saw him play at his best and near his best.

That's interesting because Jack Nicklaus himself would beg to differ. I am not attacking you personally here so please forgive me but people really need to cut Tiger some slack. I am astonished that the top 14 players in the world decided not to attend Tiger's tournament this weekend. Whatever their personal opinions of Tiger are they should have attended this event simply out of respect for what Tiger has done for the game of golf. Their current social status is very much due to Tiger's dedication to the game over the last 14 years.

Tiger is nowhere near done. The cream always rises to the top, it is just a matter of time. And even if he doesn't get back to the dominant position that he sustained for over a decade what he's already accomplished is amazing in itself.

I've seen Jack Nicklaus play a lot of golf. He was an amazing player. His understanding of shot shaping and the mechanics of the game combined with his sheer raw power placed him in a category all by himself. Likewise, that same combination placed Tiger in a category all by himself.

Jack won his last major at 46. It would not surprise me if Tiger wins his last in his 50's. It makes sense to me that no one understands golf better than Jack Nicklaus as far as practical knowledge and application. If he has faith in Tiger, who are we to disagree?

Tiger Woods is the best golfer of his time. 71 PGA victories including 14 majors, no one is even close to his records. Give credit where credit is due. You haters/duffers should get a life. Enjoy genius as it is played out. GBA

Well done Tiger Woods. If he makes this new deal with Kowa an international winner and continues to use Asian companies to propel sponsorship forward; then many of his US sponsors will surge back and rightly so. He is a strong brand and a star. Continuing best wishes.

If I had an opportunity to become a role model for the entire world, I would have cut it off before I did what he did.
01:29 AM on 06/30/2011
Well, likely you'll never be a world role model.

My hat remains off to him while he fights this battle and as he continues to enrich the lives of so many children through his foundation...despite those who have nothing constructive to say, Ben.

You would cut if off, really? You want to be a role model that badly, you say, that you would cut of your pee-pee? No wonder you hate Tiger so much!

That is exactly the kind of endorsement deal Woods should have. Nothing related to sportsmanship or love.

I still like the guy. If I hated every guy who played with girls and was in a committed relationship, I'd be a hater for sure. For me, he's a star golfer. I would never watch golf if he weren't involved and I don't tune in when he's not playing. I really love seeing a guy who doesn't fit the priveleged white guy meme playing awesome golf. Without him, golf is beige and blah, sorry folks, I'm not the only one who feels this way.

P. S. I am white, FYI.

Sad, sad guy I feel. A long, long ways down--takes something inside to remake self after such a dizzying fall from grace. Now he can find the man so long hidden from the finely crafted persona we all came to "know."
