Undocumented Journalist And Students Push Obama To Halt Deportations

Dream

WASHINGTON -- Undocumented journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and other young people without legal status called on Wednesday for the president to stop deporting students who entered the United States as children as part of administrative relief for a limited number of undocumented immigrants.

Vargas -- a former editor for The Huffington Post -- and seven other men and women shared stories of being undocumented immigrants in the United States, including facing deportation to native countries they have not lived in since childhood. They were partially speaking in support of the DREAM Act, a bill that would provide legal status to some undocumented young people in exchange for two years of military service or college, saying those who do not support the bill simply do not understand it.

"We need to take this conversation to the people who think they hate us, because they don't hate us, they just don't know us," said Vargas, who "came out" as an undocumented immigrant in a New York Times Magazine article last week.

The DREAM Act has little chance of passage in the next two years, after it failed in a Democratic-controlled Senate last year. But Democrats in the Senate have reignited a push for the the act anyway, arguing it could be paired with enforcement measures such as mandatory E-Verify, an employment verification system used by federal agencies and contractors.

"We're not quitting," said Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), who is been behind a decade-long push for the bill. "I have not given up on you and you shouldn't give up on me."

In lieu of the bill, would-be DREAM Act beneficiaries are advocating for President Barack Obama to use his executive power to block deportations of some young people, giving them deferred action or parole rather than sending them back to their native countries.

Senate Democrats also support this effort, with 22 senators signing a letter to the administration in April calling for administrative relief for "DREAMers."

Although the administration has repeatedly said that DREAM Act students are not its priority for deportation, even specifying as much in a recent policy memo, young people are still facing deportation.

One of them, University of California-Davis student Mandeep Chahal, shared her story with the crowd on Tuesday. She was granted a one-year stay last week after being nearly deported to her native India. Chahal, an honors student who plans to attend medical school, said she was treated like a criminal by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but was granted a stay after thousands wrote to lawmakers requesting a reprieve.

"If it took this for me to stay in my country, something is wrong," she said. "[Obama] can end our pain, but he still continues to deport DREAMers."

Obama insisted he still supports the DREAM Act in a press conference on Tuesday, saying the U.S. should "make sure those kids can stay." But he has flatly rejected the idea of administrative action, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a DREAM Act hearing on Tuesday.

"The policy of the department is there can be no categorical amnesty and there will not be, and that is why Congress needs to act," Napolitano said.

Obama deports dreamers? No, Obama deports law breakers. All the sugar coating with pretty words changes nothing.

Logically, this is just plain silly. Documented LAW BREAKERS are asking to be exempt from the laws of the land they want to be part of. Go stand in line with everyone else. Why does anyone get special treatment?

More Dreamer news today:

Four people were arrested after using counterfeit money at the Mobil Gas Station on North Coast Highway this week, according to Laguna Beach police.

Rosa Mojica, 63, Tania Santoya, 33, Roberto Jose Rodriguez, 33, and a 16-year-old male juvenile were all arrested Thursday for burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of fraudulent items and counterfeiting. All four are from Santa Ana.

A station employee told the police that two men tried to use counterfeit money Wednesday evening. He noticed something was wrong and confronted them, but they fled in a 1996 Chevy Camaro. The attendant was able to get a partial license plate.

Laguna Beach police found the car, with the four suspects inside, on Pacific Coast Highway near West Street and initiated a traffic stop.

They found $5,000 in counterfeit money hidden in Santoya's pants, according to a press release.

Police said it appeared that they used a high quality printer and paper that looked like worn newsprint. They attempted to use the currency at mom and pop shops and fast food restaurants.

They were transported to Orange County Jail on Thursday. The adults have also been placed on "hold" by immigration officials due to being illegal aliens.

The juvenile was taken to Juvenile Hall.

Mojica and Santoya had felony burglary warrants out for their arrest. Santoya had a warrant for $15,000 bail.

Part 4. The point is they are here, because wherever it is they came from is not as good in their eyes. That applying to those who have come as adults, but what about the children, do they deserve to be treated differently because they were forced by their parents to come to this country? I say NO, why would a two, three, four or even ten year old be held responsible for their parents actions. This is the land of opportunity and to call someone an "illegal" immigrant because they are looking for a better future is wrong in my book! How about all the drug smuggling, some might ask? What about it, it's been statistically proven that the majority of the selling of illicit drugs are from within our own borders. Marijuana is grown and sold illegally within the United States for the most part, only the hard drugs are still being smuggled across our borders on small amounts and most of us can admit we don't know many people who are or have been hard drug addicts. All I'm trying to say is open your eyes people, it's time for us to all pitch in and stop spreading rumors, we are all children of God and deserve to be treated as equals.

Yes, indeed, just doing the work Americans won't do like this guy with his family:

Tucson Citizen
San Luis, Arizona — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at the San Luis Port arrested a man, accompanied by his family, for attempting to smuggle heroin into the country on June 19. — On June 19, at approximately 6 a.m., a 41-year old Mexican male attempted to enter the U.S. with his two children in the vehicle and was referred for a secondary inspection. Subsequently, a narcotics detection canine alerted to the dash area leading to the discovery of a non-factory compartment containing 13 packages of heroin. The narcotics weighed more than 30 pounds with an estimated value of $413,440. The man was taken into custody and turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The vehicle and heroin were seized by CBP.

What does that story have to do with work americans won't do? This case is also not relevant to the many illegal immigrants who aren't drug smugglers. Do you even know anything about the other side of that story? no wonder people like you are so biased in the subject. Just so you know in regards to the mexican's crossing the border, they go through hell to get here and are sometimes promised starter money or have their families in Mexico ransomed for doing deals like the one in this story. Are you insinuating that Mexicans are stealing United States citizens drug dealing jobs? If that's the case I can assure you hardly any illegal immigrants are drug dealers in comparison to their legal counterparts.

part 2. It would seem that more and more people are believing against such statistics that prove how immigrants in general are not taking away jobs, are not taking advantage of housing or other welfare, and hardly even contribute to serious crimes. Yet, I've heard and seen comments that suggest it is the opposite, that they are the main source of crime, they use up government funding, they take money from the U.S. Citizens. I say from firsthand experience that our fellow brothers and sisters are just as good a person as any U.S. Citizen if not better in many cases. put yourself in their shoes, why would you commit a serious offense if you could risk getting kicked out of the country? How is paying for rent, clothes, cell phone bills etc. contributing to their country? Finally, how in blazes can anyone get any help from the government without a real social security card and other identification that these people don't have? If you know how please tell me so I can let these people know and then they don't have to suffer paying for everything up front despite their financial hardships. I know there are those few cases that prove otherwise, but I'm sure they're only few in comparison.

Wow, you just proved my point even more, most of these people come from terrible backgrounds or city's where crime is essential for survival. Still in comparison to the amount of crimes caused by citizens of the united states or even in comparison to the amount of illegal immigrants these people are insignificant to the cause.

I think it boils down to "money talks", I know lots of people who were illegal immigrants once and now are not because they saved their money and went through the arduous process of receiving legalization. However, the majority of those people that I know who are now legal also have told me they have absolutely no intention of learning the culture or language of the United States. I see it even more now that I work in a Vietnamese community. A lot of the older Vietnamese generation are now legal, but have no interest in applying American culture or even the language to their lifestyle, whereas on the contrary I know many ILLEGAL immigrants who study and work hard who can speak and write in English and Spanish with ease and aren't given an opportunity.

So the huffington post admits it employed an illegal alien who has no legal status to work here in America? Go figure

As for the girl who received the reprieve she can stop calling it her country because both legally and morally she is not a citizen of MY country and needs to go home. I could care less if she is a honor student... Laws are written to be enforced

"the Dream Act isn’t about students.  The age range is 12-35.   There is talk of reducing it to 30, but that just highlights the lie.  It is about much more than just students.  Under the S.3827 version of the Dream Act some applicants would be 41 years old before obtaining legal status."

"If the Dream Act were to pass, it would be all over.  It would begin a cascading of events that would ultimately lead to an amnesty of almost all of the estimated 35-40 million illegal aliens in the country.  (Another lie is that there are only 11 million illegal aliens in the country.  Nobody who knows anything believes that.)  The fraudulent document industry would go where no man has gone before.  And, it would lead to a surge of tens of millions more illegal aliens coming into the country to get in on the amnesty.  The chain migration resulting from those getting amnesty would beget a couple hundred million more people coming into our country in the next 40 years.
And that is why it isn’t going to pass.  The political cost would be too high.  Besides, the status quo of the “de-facto amnesty†of allowing open borders and not enforcing our immigration laws or employment laws works just fine for now, it has for years.  Millions are coming in each year, working here, consuming here.  Washington Pols and their business patróns get what they want without risking an enormous backlash from the voters.  And, I think they all know now that a backlash is not just theoretical."

It is time to put these illegal aliens in their place--Mexico or whatever other country of origin.

I would maybe support the DREAM Act if 1) they lowered the maximum age of entering the country to like 6 or 7 and 2) they only granted citizenship after 2 years in the military, not college. Joining the military would definitely demonstrate loyalty to America which is required of a citizen. Many people come to America only for college and maybe stick around, maybe head back home, and many Americans do the same going abroad for school.

What happens when the military is full? Those who get kicked out of the military? This does nothing to stop people from coming but offers a free lunch to hungry people. Plus people who have never been to the US will buy fake documents stating that they have been here for 10 years, yet speak no English. This will be a illegal alien gold rush. This can't happen.

How can you say many people come to study and then maybe stay and maybe head back their parents home country or country of origin? Apparently you don't know many people in this situation or aren't able to see past certain things. I ask you then why would anyone come study in English, become a proffessional and then leave to be aDoctor in their third world country where they'd be paid pennies on the dollar? How does that make sense, Am I right to think that?
