Irish Boat Abandons Gaza Flotilla, Citing Israeli 'Sabatoge'

Mv Saoirse

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — An Irish ship on Thursday dropped out of the pro-Palestinian flotilla planning to break Israel's blockade of Gaza, citing sabotage, and a U.S. ship declared it may set sail from a Greek port for Gaza without permission, activists said.

Up to 400 international activists had been due to sail this week to Gaza aboard 10 ships leaving from Greece to protest the naval blockade that Israel imposed on the Palestinian territory after Hamas militants overran it in 2007.

An Israeli raid on a similar flotilla last year killed nine activists on a Turkish ship and each side blamed the other for the violence.

The Irish ship MV Saoirse had to abandon plans to set sail because of what it called Israeli sabotage. Activist Huwaida Arraf told Israel's Army Radio that the ship's engine was damaged while in port and could have lead to deaths on board.

"When the engine was started, it completely bent," Arraf said. "While out at sea, if this would have happened, if it would have bent in this way, the boat would have started taking on water and it could have led to fatalities."

The alleged sabotage occurred at the Turkish coastal town of Gocek where the MV Saoirse has been berthed for the past few weeks, organizers said.

Earlier this week, activists said Israeli agents damaged the propeller of a Swedish ship in the Greek port.

Israel has refused AP requests for comment on the allegations.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner — asked to comment Thursday on the alleged sabotage — said there was no proof it had taken place due to a lack of "independent confirmation."

Toner, speaking to reporters in Washington, said State Department opinion is "the flotillas are a bad idea," and there're other ways to get this kind of assistance to Gaza.

"Our bottom line is, we don't want to see anyone put at risk. And that would include any action to sabotage these boats but also the boats themselves — the flotillas themselves — will put these individuals at risk."

On Thursday, American activist Ann Wright said Greek authorities were bowing to Israeli pressure and deliberately stalling the departure of 53 passengers and crew — including 11 journalists — aboard a ship named the Audacity of Hope from a port near Athens.

"We're fed up with it already, we've already waited seven days. We were ready to go a week ago," Wright said.

She wouldn't say how long activists would wait for the all-clear before the 33-meter (108-foot) ferry begins its journey. But she said the Greek coast guard would "probably" stop the boat shortly after departing.

Audacity of Hope passenger Alice Walker, author of the acclaimed novel "The Color Purple," on Thursday read to journalists letters and cards that American children are sending to Gaza residents via the ship.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the flotilla at Thursday evening at a graduation ceremony for new pilots in central Israel, praising the action of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou.

"Sometimes we are required not only to repel physical attacks by our enemies but also repel the attacks against our right to defend ourselves. In that regard, I want to thank the many world leaders who spoke out and acted lately against the flotilla provocation," he said.

"Israel has the full right to act against attempts to legitimize the smuggling of missiles, rockets and other weapons to the terror enclave of Hamas," he added.

The U.N.'s top human rights official on Thursday welcomed the Israeli government's decision to drop its threat to issue deportation orders against journalists on the flotilla.

"I'm always taking the view that the blockade of Gaza is illegal and must be lifted, since it results in a disproportionate use of force against civilians," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told reporters in Geneva.

Amy Teibel in Jerusalem and John Heilprin in Geneva contributed.

I guess since the "activists" don't know anything about their ships, they might as well blame Israel for any damage. Who needs any proof at this point ? It's all about embarrassing Israel anyway.

Activists claims against Israel are now legal tender with insurance companies :)

"could have led to fatalities" - this can now be used for life insurance claims too!

Turkey insists the boats were not sabotaged.

Greece insists the boats were not sabotaged.

But anti-Israel hate activists whose entire purpose of their mission is to demonize Israel, they're the ones making wild anti-Israel claims.

Go figure.

The title says AFTER Israeli sabotage. Then the heading here says *citing* Israeli sabotage. There is no proof of any sabotage by Israelis. That there is some trouble with the ship is not disputed. That is a real event, and fact. The titles are just throwouts for a spy novel, fantasy, unspoorted fantasy and inuendo. It is not Inspector SoandSo's newest. in an ongoing series.

You are correct that there is no evidence. Just accusations which are instantly accepted and parroted virally.
But, truth be told, I got no problem with Israel using such non-violent means to accomplish their naval blockade. Wouldn't mind joining the next such mission.

How many people on the flotilla really went on board to commit Jihad against Jews and get a free ticket to meet and greet Allah. If a Muslim dies in Jihad against the enemies of Islam he will go to paradise. This in fact happened on the last flotilla. Imagine the nerve of these people using Jews to attain the goal of paradise by Jihad. Sick thinking if you ask me. They were interviewed in Turkey before getting on board and admitted they wanted to confront Jews in Jihad. So how many of these new flotilla people want to do the same thing? I am sure that many think they are doing the right thing in their own misguided way, but I am also sure there are people on board who have their own agenda of hate. Let the spectacle begin.

The people on the boat were from all walks of life and religious back grounds, including Jewish.

The one common fact was they were opposed to oppression by Israel over the people of Gaza.

Are you talking about the last flotilla ? There were no Jews on that one, just terrorists. Supposedly there are some Jewish people on the Irish ship. If so, I'm sure they care about the plight of the people in Gaza and are truly seeking humanitarian help. But the fact still remains that the people of Gaza are really "occupied" by thier Hamas leaders who only want to destroy Israel and don't care at all about the Gaza refugees. The whole flotilla movement was made up by Hamas and the "activists" are just their latest dupes.

im sure thats what the holocaust survivor on the boat feels
07:10 PM on 07/02/2011
IF she arrives in Gaza, she may actually feel something she had not anticipated. Check out the Hamas Charter, the Muslim Brotherhood, and what it stands for. This is just too easy for the MB, getting foolish jews on a ship to denounce the one and only jewish country, all together, ready for the kill. Or, better stil, for kidnapping to make some bucks off them, get some terrorists out of jail, and then murder them. To expose any people to such danger is off the charts cruel. To do it to jews, and make fools of them in addition, is just so Holy and Religious, eh..not. The flotilla brings no *aid*; it brings *letters*. Israel brings the aid to Gaza, weekly. It is always published. The *holocaust survivor* who is not a holocaust survivor, but a misguided jew, wanting to do good, is aiding and abetting war against the only jewish nation on earth. Any ship, flying the flag of another nation, interfering in a war between two other nations, gets involved in that war. Those flotillas are a good way, should they succeed, to start WWIII. I am not too good on Bible, and what it says, but I have heard quotes like *they will come from the North*.

Again, the flotilla brings no aid, but letters. The aim is to breach the blockade and make way for ships to dock in Gaza without supervision to deliver missiles and weaponry.

Gee, I didn't know that - Turkey and Greece just look so similar spelled out.

Or, instead of being snarky without actually looking into it:

"The flotilla organizers have claimed that the ship was docked in Turkey’s territorial waters when the tampering occurred. "

Stories of racism you won't find in the Western M$M press, besides being found to be cute by Western power centers:

"The only public elementary school in Israel with both Arab and Jewish students may shut down. Parents of Jewish students in Jaffa's Weizmann School are threatening to move their children to other schools unless the municipality ensures parity between Arab and Jewish students. Although the school's studies are conducted in Hebrew, most of its students are Arabs. The Jewish parents are demanding the school be opened to students from other areas to ensure an equal number of Jewish and Arab students."

Thanks for the useless information.

Now tell us about schools in Arab and Muslim countries and how they treat non-Arabs and non-Muslims.
07:36 AM on 07/02/2011
Useless information hardly. Not from a pro or anti |$rae|i perspective. Pro |$rae|is would try to subdue this information and anti |$rae|is would try to highlight it. Either way it's hardly useless....

So your implying that the same happens in @rab countries which are mostly dictatorial (we've already gone through who these dictators are and who they represent).
Which means, at least logic would suggest, that your also implying that |$rae| is no better than these lousy regimes that @r@bs are rising up against all over the place..... Well. Thank you for proving my point.

That said, I think the onus of telling us about "egalitarianism" in @r@b education system is on you.....
12:16 PM on 07/02/2011
What is your point? Are you in the situation? If the parents want a population parity why is it your business? I guess you have to blame someone. And it is funny that you should use a Jewish source for your bs. I guess you look at all the Jewish sources to find something that agrees with your agenda? How about a Palestinian source? Oh I forgot, no free press. My bad. Seems that you like Israeli freedom of the press to find bad things to post about Israelis. Nice.
04:24 AM on 07/02/2011
If these humanitarian workers were anything like |$rae| would have you believe, at least one IDF soldier would have been killed that day. Weapons were seized by the passengers of Maarvi, but none of the soldiers were shot at... they were taken below deck and some were even treated.

This is just one an example of the laughable |$rae|i propaganda of late.....
06:42 AM on 07/02/2011
Wow, another anti-Israel poster who literally just twists reality and lies to himself and to all of us

Did you see the videos? Mobs of IHH activists swarmed around Israeli soldiers hitting them with pipes and clubs.

Why would you pretend that's not violent?

Why do people like you literally LIE TO YOURSELF in order to demonize Israel?
07:19 AM on 07/02/2011
You mean the videos hand picked by the Ministry of information??

I don't need to lie to myself to demonize |$rae|.... She does the job herself pretty well without my help.

Boarding a boat in international waters is the stuff of $om@l| pirates.....
07:48 AM on 07/02/2011

The Israeli soldiers were attacked with knives, clubs and pipes.

03:13 AM on 07/02/2011
Regular, smart liberals, and honest peace activists criticize Israel when needed in legitimate fashion, and within context.

And then extreme far-left anti-Israel hate activists are just on a mission to harm Israel, and if you get to know them a bit better then usually eventually reveal that they are against the Jews even having a homeland at all and are really battling for Israel to no longer even really exist. They are fine with Arab states and Muslim states though. And they don't care when the states all around Israel are murdering civilian protesters each day. They aren't peace activists. They're just anti-Israel hate activists. And that's who the guiding force is behind all these flotillas and these various movements.

No, what harms Israel is terrorism from Gaza, rockets from Gaza, and general anti-Israel and often anti-Jew hate from Gaza.

Israel has peace with everyone except Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and other lunatic militant organizations.

How many chocolates do YOU give to people who've sworn and attempted to eradicate your family from planet earth.

Do you people understand that over the last 3,4, or 5 centuries the world has shown the Jews that they cannot live anywhere else!

The Palestinians are Arabs, and Muslims. There are DOZENS of places for them to live. And they could live where they are now if they'd accept Israels basic right to exist as a State for the Jews.

$yri@ is an internal struggle where the people are up against a brutal and pathetic regime of Bashar. Sooner or later he will be ousted.

Im more worried about the counter-revolutionary activities of the U$/|$rae|i/$@udi alliance in 3gypt, B@hr@|n and L|by@..... All internal struggles.

The |$rae|i p@|3stin|an conflict is much older and even more of a lost cause since one party to the conflict is much much stronger, wealthier and militarized thanks to unquestioned backing by important Western power centers...

You know what - I hear about over-moderation from both sides of every issue. Every viewpoint has some people absolutely positive that the mods are out to get them.

I have come out strongly on many different topics. In the comments, people claiming to be on the same side of an issue as I am accuse the moderators of censorship. Yet my posts always make it through. (Sometimes not as quickly as I'd like, but I suspect that on high traffic stories, it is not malice but workload.)

And time after time, I see posts announcing 'The mods won't let this through but...' - which kinda takes the wind out of those sails, doesn't it? Time after time, I see posts that disagree in quite nasty ways with posts directly above and below them - I see that both sides of issues are represented.

Maybe - just maybe - posts don't go through because they really are offensive. Maybe - just maybe - there's a level of paranoia that isn't warranted. And maybe - just maybe - what you think is someone limiting the number of posts that agree with you is, in fact, the simple case of not many people agreeing with you.
