Baboon On The Run In NJ, Authorities Suspect It May Belong To Six Flags Great Adventure Amusement Park

Baboon

JACKSON, N.J. — A baboon is on the loose in New Jersey.

Police say they received two calls Thursday afternoon from people who saw the monkey, and two more residents reported Friday morning that a baboon was walking around in their neighborhoods. But despite an ongoing search of the areas, the elusive animal remained on the lam into Friday afternoon.

Authorities say the baboon may have escaped from the nearby Six Flags Great Adventure's Monkey Jungle. The park has 150 baboons.

But park officials are not positive one of their animals is missing because they are not counted daily.

The Great Adventure baboons are fenced in and implanted with microchips. Park officials say no breaches were found in the fences around Monkey Jungle, and no signs of a potential escape have been found.

Officials say anyone who spots the roaming baboon should call police – and not approach the animal, even though baboons are not typically aggressive.

The first baboon sighting came Thursday, when a driver said the animal was near Interstate 195, and later that day a woman said a baboon was sitting on her back porch in Jackson. On Friday morning, two residents in developments not far from the park reported a baboon was in their neighborhoods.

Open note to those with HuffPo who do these things:

The picture you show at the top of the article isn't a Baboon.......

Barbara - I don't like to take issue, but it is a baboon. I'm in Africa now, and we have these little critters all over. It is a juvenile, probably female.

Take issue, please.

You are so incredibly right....and I'm am so incredibly wrong.

All my life I've confused baboons and mandrills. I don't know why...there is no answer for it. Sort of like my struggle to pronouce the word "admiral" which wants to inevitabley come out "admirable"...and I'm an avid reader aged 70....who has a great grip on our language and can curse in several languages.

It has to be a right-brain, left-brain thingie.

I humbly apologize to Huffers and to those who follow me. I would purposely never lead you astray......and I thank jordjb for calling me out.....

All right now, that is enough! He may be a terrible governor but the name calling has just got to stop!

While the baboon might not be dangerous to humans, he will rip the wipers and side-view mirrors off your minivan. You have been warned.

This baboon is probably smarter than at least half of NJ's residents!

don't let that picture fool you.. depending on what type of baboon, big males can be 100 pounds and VERY dangerous.. Mandrills are known man-eaters in africa...

BUT.. typically they are a pack animal and will be scared and not aggressive unless cornered..
