Obama Says 'Nothing Can Be Off-Limits' In Budget Talks

Obama Budget Talks

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama said Saturday that "nothing can be off-limits" in the budget debate — even though Republicans have said tax increases are. The president said every tax break and federal program must come under scrutiny.

With an Aug. 2 deadline looming to raise the government borrowing limit, the president used his weekly radio and Internet address to call on Congress to make a deal.

He also renewed his call for Congress to eliminate some tax breaks for the well-off as part of any agreement. Republicans want deep spending cuts without any tax increases while Obama and Democrats call for what they term a "balanced" approach. That means one that also includes new revenue in the form of higher taxes for some, though Democrats steer clear of using phrases like "tax increases" or "higher taxes."

"Now, it would be nice if we could keep every tax break, but we can't afford them," Obama said. "Because if we choose to keep those tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, or for hedge fund managers and corporate jet owners, or for oil and gas companies pulling in huge profits without our help — then we'll have to make even deeper cuts somewhere else."

"Nothing can be off-limits, including spending in the tax code, particularly the loopholes that benefit very few individuals and corporations," the president said.

Lawmakers and the administration are seeking deficit cuts in the range of $2.4 trillion over the coming decade to balance a similar increase in the debt limit — one that's large enough to keep the government afloat past the November 2012 election. Currently the debt limit is $14.3 trillion, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says it must be raised by Aug. 2 to avoid defaulting on the government's financial obligations for the first time in the nation's history.

With both sides dug into their positions, it's not clear how compromise will be reached, though the Senate canceled its plans to take a July Fourth recess next week in order to stay in Washington and work on the problem.

Obama expressed confidence a deal could be made and instead of singling out Republicans as the barriers to agreement, he directed his message to Democrats and Republicans alike.

"We've got to cut the deficit, but we can do that while making investments in education, research and technology that actually create jobs," the president said. "We can live within our means while still investing in our future. That's what we have to do. And I'm confident that the Democrats and Republicans in Congress can find a way to give some ground, make some hard choices, and put their shoulders to wheel to get this done."

Republicans used their weekly address to criticize Obama on the economy and renew their opposition to tax increases.

"The president and Democrats in Congress must recognize that their game plan is not working. It's time to acknowledge that more government and higher taxes is not the answer to our problem," said Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind. "It's time for bold action and a new plan to address our current crisis."

Coats said that it was time for the government to "stop spending money we don't have and to enact policies that will grow our economy and get Americans back to work."

Obama Says 'Nothing Can Be Off-Limits' In Budget Talks

There we go.  There's the Obama that we've come to know and distrust.

This is yet a replay of his secret deal with the insurance and pharmaceutical companies that undercut the Congressional committees working on real healthcare reform instead  Read More...

I just love how they pretend to be in the group of people hit hard by the economy talking about evil rich when they are all very rich themselves, not a $250k millionaire rich either they are very wealthy for real but talk like they are shoulder to the wheel regular folks.
Who was it that said the bigger the untruth the more people will believe it, seems to really fit this bunch.

"nothing can be off-limits"

Good. Then lets start with your salary and the salary of both houses of Congress. You sure like to pick on CEO's but I can't think of one CEO who didn't at-least offer to take a salary of $1 until the company turns a profit again. When America is out of debt you can get paid again.

Yep, everything is on the table. Well, at least as long as it doesn't involve spending less and as long as it does involve raising taxes.

Politicians are good at saying WE, but when it comes right down to it WE never includes them. We have high unemployment, taken cuts in pay and benefits, but have any of the politicians stood up and done the same. NO! Have they cut their staffs - NO! And none of them has stood up and said they need to or will do it. If your going to walk the walk and do the talk, then they need to stand up just like WE!

Not to mention that none of the politicians who want to raise taxes have volunteered to contribute to the government at a higher rate. Wouldn't that give them at least a small amount of credibility? Failure to do that is like legislators who are lobbying to make abortion illegal continuing to have abortions until the law is passed.

There is this big threat that Medicare will be cut to where it is almost worthless. Still they waste money on drugs.

Avastin does not work and is unsafe according to the FDA.

The prostrate cancer medicine prolongs life four months, but it is very expensive.

These are trial programs to see how they work for sure. They should be paying the patients to take the medicine, not charging them.

This is still obviously the Ron Paul training thread as you folks are the only ones left...As I said last night...I'm very happy to hear that you all are supporting a candidate that has ZERO chance of winning anything. Love all the historical quotes though, just wish you all understood what they mean...Have a great Independence Day....

I'm not sure what quotes from our Founding Fathers have to do with Ron Paul. They are important and meaningful to any Conservative. And are laughed at by any of today's liberals.

"The great object is that every man be armed." "Are we at last brought to such an humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our own defense? Where is the difference between having our arms under our own possession and under our own direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?"
