Greatest American Actresses (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 07/04/11 10:21 AM ET   Updated: 09/03/11 06:12 AM ET

Like most other fields, professions, hobbies and, well, really, anything else, to truly succeed, on a lasting level, as a woman in show business has required a double standard-satisfying portfolio of talent, dedication and brains. As Hollywood rose from its short, silent roots to a full blown, culture-setting industry, it was of course men who made -- and took for their own the most prominent, glory-filled parts in -- film.

First cast as ladies in distres and objects of desire and prize, it took certain landmark talents to prove that women can not only appear on camera, they can own it in ways all their own. In Hollywood today, while certain segregations and institutional biases still exist (to which the gender of screenwriters, directors and producers can in many ways be linked), the woman star takes the lead now more than ever before.

In recognition of that growth, and in honor of the American creative and business dominance of show business, this July 4th, we take a look at some of the greatest American-born women actors, putting to a vote just which one is the greatest. Of course, all have their arguments, and it may-well be impossible to decide, but it's at least worth looking back at their careers.

To take a look at some of the greatest male actors, and vote on who you think is the absolute best, click over to this conversation-packed article.

UPDATE: It's still early, so we've added five more actresses that were foolishly overlooked.

What I would give to have seen Rita Hayworth live in her prime...

If I were presented with such a question, Barbra Streisand would not be on my list.

HOWEVER, seeing that the likes of Goldie Hawn, Geena Davis, Marilyn Monroe and Whoopi Goldberg are included, Streisand being mentioned in the company of all-time greats should not be laughed at or is unreasonable.

Her work in "Funny Girl", "The Way We Were" and "Yentl" alone deserve merit and are infinitely better than anything those aforementioned actrees have done in their entire careers.

Many comments of great actresses, but one forgotten except by TCM, is Jean Arthur. Too long ago for many of you but someone with great talent, skill, and a long list of great movies. Still I have seen many in my 60 years, but Katherine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn are always up there.

i agree and how about vivien leigh, shelly winters, and stockard channing

And - forgot! - the great Anne Bancroft!

Did I miss Barbara Stanwyck? Also, in a few decades I'll wager you'll find Allison Janney and Felicity Huffman in the top tiers. (And - agree with those who have mentioned Kathy Bates. Revisit her role in "Primary Colors" - absolutely should have won the Oscar that year.)

Personal favorite as far as acting chops is Kathy Bates. No women character (an possible any cinema character) has frightened me more than Bates' character in Misery.

Why isn't Barbara Stanwyck identified? She was one of the finest actresses ever.

No contest, Meryl Streep, as much for her choice of roles as for her performances. There are a lot of women listed that would qualify more as personalities than as great actresses. And, how can there be any list of greatest actresses that doesn't include Ellen Burstyn?

Each brought their own unique stamp to whatever role they played. To say one was better than the other hmmm. Now, ask me which are theworst actresses of our time and you can get a list as long as your arm.

The women you have pictured here where above the fray. You have forgotten to include some of the silent actresses as well.
