How Broke British Author Paul Carr Lives In Luxury Hotels Instead Of His London Apartment (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/05/11 03:16 PM ET Updated: 09/04/11 06:12 AM ET

Broke British author Paul Carr gave up his dumpy London flat for a life of luxury in the best hotels around the world. How did he do it? A combination of a strong British pound, a weak dollar and some clever uses of Internet travel sites. Watch for his favorites, his failures, the cities he loves and those he won't be returning to any time soon.

Carr has written the book, "The Upgrade: A Cautionary Tale of a Life Without Reservations," on his adventures. He has blogged for HuffPost and writes for TechCrunch, which is also owned by AOL.

So basically he exchanges pounds for dollars, which happens to be a good deal right now given the exchange rate, and stays in American hotels because he can get a room cheaper than what he would pay for an apartment in London........and this is newsworthy because........

and this is newsworthy because........ I can't begin to tell you how much I hate this type of arrogant post. If you want to be an editor, get a job as an editor. If you want to make a comment, don't follow this flimsy, intellectually feeble, cliched, paradigm of an idiot response. Nobody worthwhile cares that you are feeling snobbish and lazy today.I am going to fan you to see how many identically silly posts you have made and will make, because your type holds a certain fascination for me.Will you and your kind just please stop it. It looks stupid.

I didn't have patience to watch the entire video, but how does he pay for travel between all of these places?

I'm not sure we are being told the entire story. Me thinks this guy is fishing a book deal...

I personally have far less problem with artists and authors living off the fat of the land than I do bankers and corporate pirates. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they've made the world a little better.

I didn't even read the article; I do that whenever I see the writer or subject is about brits and Great Britain.

The last interesting thing to come out of England was the Beatles and they stole all their music from us.

I don't suppose you read much then because there sure isn't much interesting about the US. Same old tripe repeated day after day with names and faces changing once in a while. Even with all the crime, corruption, political shenanigans and strange people clamoring for attention you can almost predict what's going to happen from one week to the next. The problems are the same, they're all serious ones and nothing gets done about them. Same old, same old.

If I wanted to watch a video I'd go to youtube.

This bait and switch here at huffpost has got to stop. Half of the headlines do this -- promise one thing and deliver another.

Broke English author sleeps in luxury hotel rooms. How did he do it? By prostituting himself in those very same luxury hotel rooms.

I ran a B&B in Maine for a long time and was surprised to find that our prices were considered very cheap by European standards. We charged $115 per night.

Maine is practically free for a traveller, but charming in every way.

I love Bethel.

"$50 that's nothing." Really? Apparently British author's have a whole different idea of what it means to be broke.

There is a guide to extremely inexpensive lodgings in London. Unfortunately it dates back to the early 1930s so the prices are somewhat lower than today. But, in principle, everything else is the same and the writing is phenomenal. The guide is called "Down and Out in Paris and London" and the writer is Mr. George Orwell. The lodging in London is supervised by officers of the Salvation Army. Heads up! Stiff uppers!

I like all the people who are smug about knowing so much about traveling. This guy is still making money. He's far from broke so just relax.
