American artist Cy Twombly is dead.
He died in Rome at the age of 83, according to AFP.
The artist had been battling cancer for several years, a spokeswoman said.
Twombly created large-scale works featuring a distinctive graffiti- engraving technique on solid grey, brown or white backgrounds.
