When Bain & Co. issued its first report on the state of Indian philanthropy a year ago, there was widespread handwringing among the rich in this country. There, clearly documented, was the fact that wealthy Indians give a lot less to charity than their American or British counterparts.

I am glad to see India's charitable giving going up. The problem in India is that they have over a billion people and the population is still growing. At some point the population needs to stabilize at a sustainable level for the available resources of food, water, oil and jobs. Adding more suffering people to the population when so many are already suffering is tragic.
