They Might Be Giants Covers Chumbawamba's 'Tubthumping' At The AV Club (VIDEO)

First Posted: 07/05/11 07:01 PM ET Updated: 09/04/11 06:12 AM ET

As a part of The AV Club's "AV Undercover" series, where current bands choose from a list of pop standards to cover, They Might Be Giants chose to cover the seminal '90s hit "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba.

In order to effectively recreate the anthemic chorus of "I get knocked down / But I get up again / You're never gonna keep me down," They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh squeezed as many AV Club staffers as possible into the tiny room to chant along with the band. If the sight of a roomful of twentysomething bloggers bobbing their head to They Might Be Giants playing a hit song from 1997 doesn't bring you joy, the Internet has failed.

They Might Be Giants is no stranger to the world of comedy, as evidenced by their association with The AV Club, the non-satirical pop culture blog of The Onion. Even if the band didn't perform the theme song for "The Daily Show," which would provide enough comedy cred to last several lifetimes, they're also best friends with Weird Al, and will later this month appear at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn with Patton Oswalt, Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman.

Who knew so many pasty white nerds had musical talent?

In all seriousness, I love TMBG. Their "Don't Let Start" video is one of the best ever.

TMBG are so precious and full of fun! I saw them live about 18 years ago, and their voices still sound great.

I loved this. It was a lot better than the cover of TMBG's "Birdhouse in your Soul" by another band earlier in this AV club series.

I love you John(s) !!

Yeah... I didn't like Titus Andronicus's version either, but they're kind of a weird band and are hard to get into, I guess. I did love that Bukowski poem they played right before the song. It was definitely the highlight

That's gotta be their best cover since Ted Leo did Tears for Fears. What a wonderful song. What a wonderful band. What a wonderfully enthusiastic group of twenty-somethings... even if most of them are probably in their mid-thirties.

I love TMBG, and that song is definitely up their ally. Perhaps running the verses through that electronic box was a mistake, though.

"I get knocked down / But I get up again / You're never gonna keep me down." This is my write-in ballot for our new national anthem. We need to stop fighting our neighbors for being different and start fighting whatever's got us down.
