Bree Boyce, Miss South Carolina, Talks About 110-Pound Weight Loss (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 07/06/2011 9:34 am Updated: 09/05/2011 5:12 am

Newly-crowned Miss South Carolina Bree Boyce is already on a mission, The State reports.

The 22-year-old dropped 110 pounds over the course of two years before winning last weekend's pageant and, according to her "Eating Healthy and Fighting Obesity" Facebook page, her "goal in life is to inspire all ages to become healthy through good eating habits, exercise, and believing in Yourself."

In an interview with HeavyUSA, Boyce rattled off the list of different diets she's tried, from Atkins to Weight Watchers, revealing, "What has worked for me the most and long-term was throwing the diet out of the window."

She also explained how she got involved with all of the waving and smiling:

"The weird thing is, I lost all this weight and someone approached me and they said, 'You know, you should compete in a pageant.' Because pageants have platforms and you can go and speak about and it kind of gives you a microphone I guess, so that you're not just going around saying, 'I lost this weight, this is what you should do, blah, blah, blah...' It gives you that foot in the door to go into schools and go into organizations. So, I said, 'Why not? Why shouldn't I compete in this pageant?' I think what people find so strange is that I've lost 100 pounds and I compete in pageants and I do a swimsuit competition. People think that's hilarious, that it's so rare. I think that, for me, being in pageants and my goal to become Miss America strikes people as strange because they have this whole thing with beauty pageant contestants. They have to be a certain size and a certain weight, you have to look a certain way, have plastic surgery, but I really want to show young girls and guys that you don't have to be a double-zero."

Boyce added:

There's a huge fear in me that I'll gain it back but I think I've come to the point where that fear has scared me so much that it's something I think about every time I put something in my mouth, every time I do some physical activity, I think about where did I come from. I came from that yo-yo dieter, that overweight child that got picked on when I was small. I came from all that and whenever I want to give up or mess up, I look at those moments, and it really helps me look forward to the future.

Seems like she's on the right track. Not only will Boyce be heading to the Miss America pageant in January, she won the preliminary swimsuit round in her homestate. She told reporters, "I proved a lot of people wrong. Winning that swimsuit award was the icing on the cake. The cake I didn't eat the night before."

the media, once again, making every single thing about WEIGHT. i agree with what the other person said, this story makes it looks like 'all you have to do is be skinny and then you'll have all these opportunities to truly show who you are, speak on a platform, blah blah blah.' it doesn't matter if she's skinny or healthy (you can be both, obviously), the point is this article is focused on glamorizing weight loss.

And as other posters have pointed out, the changes of her KEEPING that weight off are "slim" (if you'll pardon the pun!) to none.....!! Virtually ninty-nine percent of people who lose vast amounts of weight gain it all back, and more! How hard life will be for her then, having had a brief but exciting (albeit somewhat shallow and less than meaningful) existence as a forme beauty queen. Ah, vanity, thy name is HUMAN!! So silly. Tell me what she's done for humanity... THAT'S what defines her worth as a person!

The most interesting part of this story is the shallowness of most people. The person you're all focused on now is the same human being she was before... the same spirit (i.e., TRUTH of her!) dwells in this woman as the one that lived in that overweight body in the past. The exact same men who are drooling over her now would have been snickering, rolling their eyes, and even making snide remarks, treating her as less than human at her former weight. Says far more about THEM than it does about HER. Interesting commentary on human nature, and not a very flattering one I'm afraid.

I am especially enjoying the comments saying how bony she is now. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Ridiculous.

It makes me feel like, all you have to be is thin. I don't find her exceptionally beautiful or anything. Great she lost weight though.

That's nice and all, but I feel sorry for the guy who marries her. She will gain that weight back in a heartbeat when she gets knocked up.

UPDATE: The 110 pounds she lost will compete against her as Miss North Carolina. It plays the clarinet and believes in evolution.

I tried hard not to laugh at this. I failed. I'm fat and even found it funny. :P

Losing weight via a healthy diet and exercise, good for her. Hopefully she will inspire others to do the same.

Congrats, Bree! Way to go! I've lost 75lbs myself, and it sounds like we're trying to get the same message out: eat healthy, move your body, and believe in yourself. I blog about my journey at: http://bethapproach.blogspot.com.

Good for her. I've always stuck by the fact that a healthy lifestyle is the key to managing one's weight. Fad diets only work for so long. I hope her story inspires other to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

She lost the weight to be healthy and because she wanted to. The pageant followed. Yet there are still comments accusing her of encouraging anorexia, remarks about skinny broads, etc.

Lighten up and be happy for her. She did it for herself, not to win the contest. Anyone who sets a goal, works hard to reach it and is proud of themselves, deserves nothing but Best Wishes!
