Divorce On TV: The Fantasy Of Onscreen Divorce

In the summer of 1979, six months before the Oscar-winning divorce drama "Kramer vs. Kramer" hit the theaters, my mother foreshadowed Joanna Kramer's abrupt departure by moving out of our house. She'd been told by a priest that this was the best strategy for saving her marriage, so she left not so much to find herself (like Meryl Streep's character) as to find a job, something my father (like Dustin Hoffman's Ted Kramer) had strictly forbidden her to do.
