Debt Hawk GOP Wants Big Boost For Pentagon Budget While Domestic Programs Are Slashed

WASHINGTON -- As it considers steep cuts to domestic programs in an effort to slash the deficit, the House is set to consider a defense spending bill on Wednesday that increases the Pentagon's budget by $17 billion.

The Defense Department appropriations bill includes $530 in base Pentagon spending, which is $8 billion less than President Obama's request for fiscal year 2012. There's an additional $118.6 billion for overseas contingency operations -- a $39 billion drop, reflecting the expected drawdown in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Republicans announced in May that they were going to try to cut $30 billion from federal agencies' operating budgets in order to deal with the growing deficit.

While the Pentagon isn't getting all the money the Obama administration would like it to receive, it's still in a significantly stronger position than many other government agencies. If the Pentagon gets its full $17 billion increase, that means that domestic agencies have to absorb $47 billion in cuts.

The Environmental Protection Agency and other natural resources programs, for example, face "a second round of $2 billion-plus cuts, which would bring total spending down by 15 percent from appropriations levels at the outset of this year," David Rogers at Politico noted. "Science and space agencies, together with the departments of Justice and Commerce, would be affected by cuts of $3.1 billion, an 11 percent reduction altogether from the amount the same programs were receiving before the April showdown."

Late last month, the Office of Management and Budget issued a statement saying it "strongly opposes a number of provisions" in the bill (H.R. 2219).

"If a bill is presented to the President that undermines his ability as Commander in Chief or includes ideological or political policy riders, the President's senior advisors would recommend a veto," the statement read.

The objectionable provisions include additional funds to buy a C-17 cargo plane that the Air Force did not request and restrictions on base closing. The administration also made clear that it "strongly objects to the provisions that limit the use of authorized funds to transfer detainees and otherwise restrict detainee transfers."

The defense spending bill is being considered under an open rule, which means that House members will be able to offer a slew of amendments, including one from Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) to defund the U.S. mission in Libya.

That plane is made not to far from me here in California. I don't get it. How can congress override the military contract and say you'll take another one like it or not, after they've been told that there are enough, and they don't want any more? Who the frack is in charge of the Military Budget? Sheesh.

At least, yes they did, stop the second engine last year.

My god the hypocrisy is thick these days. The prevailing attitude among our pathetic bunch in congress is that money for their personal districts is vital for job creation and infrastructure building, but anyone elses is waste and pork. Alabama's worthless Jeff Sessions comes first to mind, but you could put any current Republican name there and have the same result.

There are thousands of radicalized idiots that would like nothing more than to kill Americans for a bunch of virgins. We don't need a military to handle that problem. Send a bunch of Liberals to use their super intelligence and solve that problem with diplomacy.

Defense spending has become the greatest source of pork ever devised. Politicians from both parties and all political stripes are eager to elbow their way to the feeding trough.

Remember the old saying 'It will be a great day when schools have all the money they need, and the Pentagon has to hold a bake sale to buy a missile". That time is long overdue.

The GOPT are so bent on supporting the military industrial complex, they have forgotten what should be first and foremost - America and Americans.

If the GOPT have their way, we will be like the old Iron Curtain countries - displaying off our military wares, while our children go uneducated and hungry and our infrastructure fades away.

Throughout history certain nations have made the decision to fund a huge military while reducing infrastructure. The former Soviet Union is only the latest example.
What history teaches is that if you are going to have a massive military you have to have a way to pay for it. When you allow your economy and infrastructure to deteriorate while funding a massive military, your doomed. It reaches a point where you just can't afford it. I don't think anyone will disagree that America is in trouble economically. We can blame it one whoever we want but we agree we're in trouble.
While being forced to cut social programs, allow our educational systems to deteriorate and watch our outdated and unmaintained infrastructure to fail we continue to fund a massive military. While other nations build high speed railways we build better bombers. While other nations build more powerful internet and communication systems we build more powerful aircraft carriers. From the 50's to the 70's we built an interstate highway system, inland waterway transportation system, massive dams for power and crop irrigation. Today we use those systems without even thinking about them. Today we have unacceptable unemployment levels and are falling behind in every area but the military. It's time to turn this thing around. It's time to rebuild America with American workers. It's time for America to lead instead of follow in the 21'st century. It['s time for America to once again to take care of America, first, last and always.

I don't understand the conscience of a person who would take away the little that the poor have and give it to the rich who already have plenty. How do Republicans sleep at night?

As it turns out, for those of you that are not familiar with how the defense department works, the defense budget is the most efficient job creation and economic stimulus that the federal government has in play. The funding for technology and weapons development, manufacturing, and logistics support create more American jobs then any other government program. The DOD procurement of airplanes, tanks, ships, guns, missiles, electronic servelliance, predator drones, etc. has created a huge set of companies and millions of jobs for Americans. Everything used in our military arsenals are designed, developed, and manufactured in this country. Cutting the defense budget will create layoffs in these companies at a time when the creation of jobs is critical. At least, the government actually gets something back for it's defense expenditures versus the attempted recent stimulus program that created absolutely nothing, including jobs.

But why not take some of those billions and start a work project like the WPA to repair or replace our infrastructure instead of waging more wars? And what exactly do we get for all the weaponry, the waging of wars? We get more hatred from other countries, more terrorists, more dead and wounded troops.

Just to take one of your incorrect points out of many, the patriotic defense contractors have been outsourcing many parts of these systems. Chinese chips for example.

What a load of BS................
