Iris Van Herpen: The Craziest Couture Show Of The Week? (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/07/2011 4:38 pm   Updated: 09/06/2011 5:12 am

Newsflash: we may have found the nuttiest couture show this season.

Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen presented her Fall/Winter 2011 Haute Couture collection earlier this week in Paris and the theme seemed to be couture as creature, with tentacles and scales. Or was it couture as weaponry, with those metal spikes? Or maybe anatomy, with a human skeleton dress?

Suffice it to say, this couture collection takes the crazy cake. Check out extreme creativity at work in the pictures below.

What a bunch of crap. Money spent on these items should go to helping the needy or funding arts & music in our public schools.

They all look like extras from Star Trek if you ask me. It's fun stuff but what is it really for?

What is shown in photos on this collection is not from a designer of clothing. In fact it blatently states that the designer has run out ideas and has substituted these gargoyles in the place of serious clothing designs. Dior has done similar with Gaytten piling up patches of fabrics to imitate clothes, popping cubes and balls with crazy coifs in bubble gum colours on their head. Grab anything at hand attach it to something goofy and send it out on the runway. They have lost it and the more the fashion editors grab it up and praise it the more they have to do it. Clothes basically are boring after stuff like this and Gaytten's Dior for women and men, so the runway becomes a battle ground for 'what/who can top this' and be so revolting and/or rediculous they will get some reaction and attention. Maybe haute couture will never get back to reality and the Daphny Guinnesses and Lady Gagas will become the only icons fashion editors will want to see.

I hope I'm not the only one who finds this really weird and somewhat ugly? I like the use of organic curves in the designs, but the overall effect is lost becuase it's hideous.

I love the wild styles. They are not intended to be worn, but are works of art.

I immediately thought about the costuming from Dune.

I can't figure out how to vote in this. Although I click the little button 1 through 10 there is no button to submit the vote.

Maybe the designer is auditioning her work for science fiction movie projects, I can definitely see her close working there.

Most designers include as part of their coutoure collection, their more avantgarde art inspired pieces. TYPICALLY these are never worn for every day use for obvious reason because they aren't functional at all. These pieces are usually housed in their own "Archive" house which is very similar to a designers "museum collection"
