California Prisoners Join Hunger Strike To Protest Solitary Conditions

Prison Hunger Strike

First Posted: 07/08/11 08:36 PM ET Updated: 12/01/11 07:20 PM ET

Nearly 1,500 inmates at six California prisons have joined a hunger strike by prisoners confined in one of the state's harshest isolation units, prison officials said Friday.

The hunger strike began a week ago and was organized by prisoners confined in the Security Housing Unit at Pelican Bay State Prison, a maximum security facility located near the Oregon border. Inmates there are held in windowless isolation cells for more than 22 hours a day and can have little or no contact with other prisoners for years and even decades at a time.

A core group of prisoners at Pelican Bay said they were willing to starve to death rather than continue to submit to prison conditions that they call a violation of basic civil and human rights.

"No one wants to die," James Crawford, a prisoner serving a life sentence for murder and robbery, said in a statement provided by a coalition of prisoners' rights groups. "Yet under this current system of what amounts to intense torture, what choice do we have?"

The hunger strike comes only weeks after the Supreme Court ordered California to dramatically lower its prisons population, because severe overcrowding was exposing inmates to high levels of violence and disease.

California prison conditions were so poor as to be "intolerable with the concept of human dignity," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in his majority opinion.

The hunger strike is not a protest against overcrowding, however, but against the treatment of offenders who are segregated from the general population due to gang affiliations or crimes committed in prison.

In June, the Pelican Bay inmates provided prison officials advance warning of their intent to begin a hunger strike and made six key demands, including that the prison reform its policies on long-term solitary confinement.

The prisoners cited a 2006 report by a group of attorneys and law enforcement professionals that determined long-term solitary confinement practiced in U.S. prisons can create "torturous conditions that are proven to cause mental deterioration."

State and federal courts have rejected prisoner lawsuits seeking to alter such policies, however. Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said that prisoners in the Pelican Bay isolation unit were held there due to their known affiliation with prison gangs or for violent acts committed in prison.

"The purpose of the Security Housing Unit is to remove gang members' influence over other inmates and to keep our prisons safe," she said.

The prisoners also called for an end to a policy allowing indefinite detention in the isolation unit for inmates suspected of continued involvement in gang activity. Gang-affiliated prisoners can be released from the unit if they "debrief," or provide information on other gang members.

Those who choose not to "debrief" must serve a minimum of six years in the solitary unit and can be held there indefinitely if they engage in any activity that prison officials deem gang-related.

It's amazing that these prison gang members have conned crazy liberals into believing their BS about harsh conditions. The only reason complaint is that they want to return to mainline population without going through the debriefing process. The debriefing process is incredibly effective at breaking down prison gangs and the gang members don't like this. So they made some stuff up about harsh conditions and "social justice" to attract the attention of the bleeding hearts.

This also wasn't a real hunger strike since all inmates had access to food purchased through commissary. The strike was only against state-issued meals.

the conditions are unconstitutional... and the access to junk food is also a terrible corporate business that shall be abolished... and the gang situation, prisoners have been fighting for decades to desegregate which was an institutional invention by the Prison Bureau... there are numerous of studies and research about this issue... you can find them at the Harvard Kennedy School and other major criminology departments... and literature...

Flat out lie. I've worked at 5 different prisons in my 18 year career so far. Inmates self segregating to the extreme of choosing SHU over being housed with a member of another race or gang affiliation is common. There is absolutely no wide spread effort to desegrate facilities except by the bureaus and departments themselves. Small isolated groups working with the encouragement of staff at some institutions are the only examples of inmates desegrating. My currrent institution is on lockdown because 200 or so Pisas (Mexican nationals prison gang) and DC Blacks squared off on the yard for the 3rd time in as many months over having to sit together at dining tables in the chow hall due to yet another effort by the BOP to FORCE desegration on them Mabel. Offer insight only on issues with which you have intimate familiarity. Otherwise ask someone who does.

Do you know this first-hand? Also, how do you know they had money to purchase commissary food????

I wouldn't cry for these LOOSER's.

First they commit the crimes that got them locked up in the first place.

Then kept comitting more crimes once inside the Institution they were originally assigned to (San Quentin, Folsom and others)and get transferred to Pelican (aka Alcatraz) Bay Prison for being "A Bad Boy"!

Basically, "All of the Bad Apples" Isolated in one place.

And its not like in the old '30's and '40's Movies, where they're placed Naked in a Blacked out Damp Smelly Dungeon type cell. Watch MSNBC's "Lockup"- Pelican Bay.

As for a "Hunger Strike". Sure. They may not be eating the Prison Issued Food, the Meals you would find at: "Home Style Buffett" but they're eating something.

I figure they're getting tired of eating: Top Ramen and Granola Bars.

They're not the Victims here!

The Real Victims are the Dead and Maimed of these Prisoners.

Good. More people that shouldn't ever see the light of day will die then. Win-win situation, if you ask me...

Sorry, folks, but the moment they committed the crime, they gave up their right to be called "human." Nothing but animals locked up in those prisons. Criminals have too many rights as it is.

I'm also someone who was screwed over by the system when my ex decided that he wanted to try to kill me instead of dealing with the fact that our abusive relationship was over. Criminals simply have too many rights as opposed to the folks they commit crimes against. Even though the cops saw that my ex had his hands around my neck and I was struggling to stay alive, they gave him an appearance ticket and sent him home....1/2 a block away. *I* was the one who had to turn MY life upside down as opposed to the CRIMINAL WHO ALMOST KILLED ME! So do I have sympathy for criminals? NO WAY. They gave up their rights as a human being the moment they committed their crime.

So yeah....I believe in a woman's right to any medical procedure she sees fit, including an abortion and I think that EVERY consenting adult, no matter what their sexual orientation, which makes me a social liberal. However, I don't think the government should be coddling people like they have for the past 20 years, and I think that welfare recipients that have 2 children or more should be sterilized, because they shouldn't be spending MY TAX DOLLARS having more kids. In that respect, I'm all about being socially responsible.

In for murder, commits crimes in prison and then throws a hissy fit when they put him in isolation. Hunger strike .... he should be careful what he wishes for.

yes they do... read the constitution....

"yes I know they do... and I have read the constitution thank you..." My point was if you hadn't broken the law to begin with you wouldn't be in prision and if you could get along with the other inmates your butt wouldn't be in the hole for 22 hours out of the day. It is thier own fault for the situation they are in.
