Joe Arpaio, Arizona Sheriff, To Pay $200,000 In Racial Profiling Case

PHOENIX (AP) -- The office of an Arizona sheriff known for his efforts against undocumented immigrants has settled a claim with two men and will pay $200,000 in a racial profiling case.

The claim arose from one of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's (ar-PY'-oh) worksite enforcement raids.

Deputies raided a landscaping company in search of identity-theft and fraud suspects Feb. 11, 2009. They stopped Julian and Julio Mora's pickup truck outside the business.

A federal judge later determined the deputies had no reason to stop the men or detain them for nearly three hours.

Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona tell The Arizona Republic the settlement should send a message to police agencies that engage in discriminatory practices.

Sheriff's office attorney Tim Casey says officials couldn't identify the deputies who made the stop, which made it impossible to defend the merits of the stop.

If I understand the outcome right, what gets me is $100,000 per guy for 3 hours of your life. $33,333/hr. Hope I get lucky and get stopped based on racial profiling someday too.

But we have the Constitution and their collective response - so what! They can say what they please, practice the religion of their choice, come/go as they please, but more the average Joe is afforded protections that Americans do not have they also have universal HC, a retirement plan, and 2 mths paid vacation/year.

America has only DEBT and TWO on going Wars with nothing to show for either. Its people can retire - NEVER, few Unions exist, and appears that elected officials care not for those who elect them but for those who contribute the most to them.

To her America is the (NOT) so great and I agree she just had to see it and experience it for herself.

They were also amazed at the level of crime in the USA. Crimes that appear "acceptable" like shooting fellow kids in their schools, shooting elected officials in the head, the bizarre need to care a gun everywhere, drive-by shootings and Gang violent just not seen where they come from.

Rudeness seen from fellow Drivers was another issue - again just not seen where they come from. Indifferent to those around them with no sense of community no sense of belonging a seemingly I got mine so sc*ew you attitude. Just about trying to look rich! When in reality most Americans exist on credit with interest attached, leased vehicles, and over extended mortgages that require 30 years to pay off.

Americans love for the "Credit Score" was another thing that sent her high and to the right. To her it was but a noose around one's neck.

Also the on line personal databases used to expose where you have ever resided, SSn, DOB, Name, Martial status, etc. Unheard of and such a violation of personal privacy. I told her it does not stop there - arrest,civil suits, marriage/divorce, property taxes the list goes on and on.

They both commented on the divide that exist between fellow Americans. More like the "Divided" States of America they would say then the United States. What EXACTLY unites your people they ask? I could not think of a single thing.

My spouse and daughter were also dismayed at the poor conditions they saw of major roads in major USA cities from NYC to LA. In Germany roads are all built to exacting standards able to withstand high speeds and fidget temps. Even in my spouse native country ( a former COMMUNIST Nation at that) the roads are well maintained and the place by far cleaner! Regardless of the city you travel to in her Country you find it very clean with recycle bins abound and used.

My 12yo (who like her Mom is fluent in 3 languages and was already taken classes reserved for most College Freshman) was most impacted by what she saw. Reports of crime in her local school to include STABBINGS, the general view that fellow kids her age are YEARS behind her and the amount of violence seemingly in everything around her from video games, TV shows, to toys!

At 12 she NEVER wants to go back to the USA after spending under a year there. Her mom is in agreement and I NEVER hear about America being so GREAT!

My spouse was most appalled at the HC system which she got to experience first hand when I got sick and had to seek treatment at a facility in Miami. The whole idea of a Private-for-profit concept behind the care of humans was simply too much to believe. Being that only America has such a system. What do folks do who lack insurance she would ask? Or have pre-existing conditions? Or even for those with insurance try to pay 20% of an ICU bill. Then there was the individual bills from all the parties involved - ED MD, Admitting MD, Radiologist, Hospital, ambulance, pharmacy, etc.

I told her THAT is WHY only in America you find personal BANKRUPTCY as a direct result of outstanding medical bills.

We thank the Lord above ever day we get up that unlike Americans we have universal coverage. We NEVER see a bill

After spending years now living abroad (Vancouver, Germany, Middle East) I am appalled to see what America has become. Closed minded "Christians" who now openly display a level of bigotry and hatred that I am simply stunned.

A Nation more "Divided" then "United" between Red and Blue. The racial gap is now a divide with WASP pretty much haing anybody not like them. Hate Gays, hate the poor/less fortunate, hate folks for color, different religious beliefs, the list just appears to grow by the day.

A Nation is defined by HOW it treats its less fortunate citizens I can now see clearly what America thinks of its! I hear folks speak of America being the Land of Dreams but for most Americans it is just that - a dream. For their reality is dismal. I hear folks speak of America as being so great I then ask them to expound on that.

The response is usually related to TV shows seen of the place having NEVER actually lived there. My spouse was among those UNTIL I finally took her to the States. Neither her nor our 12yo has any desire to ever return. Dismayed by the level of obesity seen, the poor roads, the demand that we pay for everything from a meal on a flight, to baggage, to a movie on a flight EVERYBODY has their hand out.
