Japan Earthquake: Powerful Quake Strikes Off Northeastern Coast

First Posted: 07/09/11 10:17 PM ET Updated: 09/08/11 06:12 AM ET

A powerful earthquake struck off Japan's northeastern coast on Sunday. Tsunami advisories were issued following the Japan earthquake, Tokyo Breaking News reported. The alert was later lifted.

According to Reuters, Fukushima nuclear plant workers evacuated to higher ground following the earthquake, with no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Tokyo Electric Power said that there did not appear to be any further damage at the nuclear plant.

In March, Japan's earthquake and tsunami devastated the country, and wreaked havoc at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The Associated Press reports:

The quake hit at 9:57 local time (0057 GMT), and a warning of a tsunami was issued for most of the northeastern coastline. The epicenter of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan's main island, Honshu, at a depth of about 20 miles (30 kilometers).

Japanese officials predicted the quake could generate tsunami of up to 20 inches (50 centimeters), but the initial waves were only about 4 inches (10 centimeters). The tsunami warning was lifted after the forecast arrival time of the waves

passed in most areas without any tsunami being recorded.

Japan's Meteorological agency at first estimated the strength of the quake at 7.1, but later revised that to 7.3. It also revised the depth estimate from 10 to 30 kilometers.

Tokyo who lives in the prefectures of Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Aichi, Tokushima and Kochi, who thinks these days especially hard about whether, when and where he last ate meat. For now it is clear according to official figures, that sells these, eight out of 47 prefectures in Japan and radioactively contaminated meat was eaten. The beef had slipped through the checks, which increases the criticism of the already patchy radiation studies of food in Japan yet. Overall, it's about 437 kilograms, some of which contain a cesium dose of more than 3,200 becquerels per kilogram. The already high threshold in Japan is 500 becquerels per kilogram.
Other prefectures refuse to make such claims for fear that the grocery stores or restaurants that have finally sold the beef could unwittingly, nevertheless, be boycotted in the future. The meat is apparently from a farm in Minami-Soma. Minami-Soma is located in Fukushima Prefecture, the farm about 30 kilometers from the earthquake and tsunami devastated by atomic power plant in Fukushima-Daiichi away. The farmer had to present knowledge, his livestock fed with contaminated straw that partially showed values of 75,000 becquerels.

Osaka Detects Cesium above Limit in Meat from Fukushima Cows

Osaka, July 13 (Jiji Press)--Radioactive cesium above the legal limit has been detected in the meat of two cows shipped from a farm in the Fukushima Prefecture city of Minamisoma, the Osaka Prefecture government said Wednesday.
The readings ranged from 3,710 becquerels per kilogram to 4,350 becquerels, against the government-set limit of 500 becquerels.
The latest findings confirmed that the meat of all of the six cows that were shipped by the farm between May and June and sold on a Tokyo marketplace contained cesium above the limit.
Separately, the Tokyo metropolitan government said a total of 1,438.7 kilograms of the tainted meat were sold to meat processing firms and other buyers in 11 prefectures.
Of the amount, 437.65 kilograms were sold to consumers or consumed in other ways at 28 retailers, meat processing firms and restaurants in the eight prefectures of Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Aichi, Osaka, Tokushima and Kochi.

From May 13th

According to Robert Jacobs, a professor at the Hiroshima Peace Institute, the true scale of the crisis will take years to assess.

“The government in Japan is really not in a position to take control of the plant. They will have to depend on the professionals who work
for Tepco. The affairs are much more serious than we were told earlier,” stated Jacobs.

Jacobs also believes a meltdown at the plant has been hushed up.

“We were not told that for a long time, probably because Tepco did not even realize it for a long time'" he stated. "I have a rule of thumb, which is that anything that is publicly stated is probably around 10 to 20 percent of what’s true. It will take us years to know the extent of the contamination and the extent of the fuel melting. The best-case scenario in this situation is that it will take months to begin to stop leaking the radiation from the reactors.”

He was correct, sadly enough!
