William And Kate Tour Skid Row

LOS ANGELES -- They came, they schmoozed, they fundraised.

Following a nonstop weekend that included a few chukkers of polo, time with Hollywood's own version of royalty and several events that raised millions of dollars for charity, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed back to the U.K. on Sunday.

Their Southern Californian stopover came at the end of a nine-day visit to Canada, the first tour Prince William and his bride Catherine have made since getting married in April.

The U.S. portion of their travels was a somewhat low key affair compared to their northern visit, where – French separatists aside – the duke and duchess were greeted with rapturous welcomes as they crisscrossed the Commonwealth country.

Excitement in California was more muted, though small crowds of well-wishers waving British and American flags lined up to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds and well-heeled fans paid thousands of dollars to sip champagne in the couple's presence at a charity polo match in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

Disneyland, the Hollywood sign and the beaches were not on the couple's agenda, but the duke and duchess managed to see a sweeping sampling of the Los Angeles area.

They also attended a star-studded, black-tie soiree to promote British filmmaking talent where the guests included Tom Hanks and Jennifer Lopez. On Sunday, they paid a brief visit to Skid Row, downtown's gritty homeless core.

"Just seeing the smile on Catherine, it was great," said 15-year-old Iliana Samaniego, who along with more than a dozen other performers danced for the couple at Skid Row's Inner-City Arts academy.

Like many who saw the couple, the performers were taken by their easy charm. Jessica Cornejo, 19, said she was thrilled when William gave a double thumbs-up and told them "brilliant" at the end of their performance.

Many at the school were impressed by how down-to-earth and casual the couple were and said they put everyone at ease.

"They were like your oldest friends and family," said Bob Bates, co-founder of Inner-City Arts. "The kids really took them to heart."

The trip also included a rare display of public affection. After scoring four goals at the polo game and stepping onto a stage to collect the winner's trophy from his wife, William gave her a kiss on each cheek.

Aside from the famous kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on their wedding day, it was one of the first times they have embraced in public.

The three-day trip was a tightly scripted affair, though the William and Kate, as she is better known, took a few moments on Sunday morning to greet a small crowd that assembled near the home of the British consul general, where they stayed.

After attending a swanky reception to raise money for Tusk Trust, an African wildlife conservation group, their final stop before departing for the U.K. was with the group ServiceNation: Mission Serve, which aims to help veterans find jobs.

Inside the event in Culver City, giant U.S. and British flags hung behind a stage where the smiling duke addressed a cheering crowd.

"All the companies and employers taking part today are providing opportunities which mean something very immediate and personal to us," said William, who is a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter pilot for the British military. "Catherine and I both have friends back in Britain who could benefit from a brilliant initiative like this."

Kelly York, a 23-year Air Force veteran, came to the fair hoping to find a job that will allow her to remain in the Los Angeles area when she retires next year.

"I'm sure that they had 50 million places they could go and see," York said. "The fact that they even take five minutes to stop here and say something to the veterans, that's huge."

The duke and duchess met for about 15 minutes with the Fraijo family, which includes three generations of Marine Corps veterans. Steve Fraijo said William, who is a search-and-rescue pilot in the Royal Air Force, seemed committed to veterans issues.

"He knows what war is about," said Fraijo, 48.

After speaking with veterans, the duke and duchess helped prepare care packages for children of deployed service members. Their flight to London departed shortly after 4 p.m.

"As this is my last opportunity before we leave this afternoon, I would just say, on behalf of us both, how grateful we are to have been welcomed so warmly in the Golden State and the City of Angels," the duke said. "Thank you so much."

I appreciate their kindness towards America's poor and down trodden. Perhaps it is the way the headlines lead into the article but it just make their visit sound like a rich person's trip to the zoo to look at the poor.

All one has to do is look at this thread to see why bullying and teasing is such a problem. Negativity is more present than kindness always.

In their visits to inner-city kids and a veterans' job fair, their reception showed that they made people who could easily feel marginalized from the larger society feel instead a little more included; they also did the groups the benefit of bringing them some publicity.

Maybe those here who are griping about their doing it for a "photo op" would feel less cynical if they actually sent a donation to one of those two, or other comparable, groups. Now that would be a worthwhile outcome.
01:09 PM on 07/12/2011
Ummm, most of us do that --do you? And don't you find it unusual that the American branch of the Prince's Foundation say they "haven't decided yet" how to spend the money raised?? They could send it to the UK or to Africa.I mean, it's nice to "feel included" in for ten minutes but wouldn't it be nice if the "millions" were actually kept here and spent on the folks they "included"?
Made some real change instead of purely symbolic actions?
Because it went back to life as usual for them after the royals jetted back to their castles. Maybe you should make your complaint to Willie and Katie instead of your fellow Americans.
02:19 AM on 07/12/2011
Oh, I see the American branch of the Foundation hasn't decided where the money will go yet. Could go to the UK or Africa..... if so, sorry to the underprivileged kids and Skid row persons! You'll have to rely on help from your fellow peasants like me. I promise you I will do what I can.
And I will not use helicopters over neighborhoods either.

I don't bash on the Brits for wanting to keep their royals--it's their business. If they want to imagine that somebody's family is better than theirs and deserves whatever perks they get--well, they are entitled to their own fantasies. As far as the number of celebrity type folks who make visits to "disadvantaged areas" well, just about anybody who wants a photo op for justifying their existence, American politicians --or otherwise. I just hope some of the money they raised stayed here for the folks they claim to want to help---since they obviously cost the area some $$$$$ for security and we are hurting for cash.

So, why didn't somebody ask them about England's homeless and version of skid row? I kinda believe there is no such thing in England. If I am right, why didn't we say, hey, what do you do that we aren't? Nice looking couple. He has his mother' in him. And she has a lovely heart. Glad that it did not die with her as he looks like he will be a fine world leader with this intelligent and happy woman at his side. Ya'all keep the neurotic royal nut cases out of ur relationship and u will be fine.

Ariel don't believe it, they have a HUGE homeless problem in Great Britian just like we do in the states.
02:11 PM on 07/12/2011
LOL! Well, I hear they have "royals "that own several castles a piece. The castles and grounds appear quite large and have lots of rooms. A little shifting and the UK homeless problem is solved....there may be a use for royalty after all.......

They actually did more for the country in a few days than most, if not all, of our own ruling political class.

Two thumbs up and Brilliant to the Duke and Dutchess.!

Ruling class--wow you hit the nail on the head. America is not supposed to have one.

Did something crawl up everyone's butt and died? I just don't understand all the bashing? Just exactly what did William and Kate do to you to deserve such nasty comments. Didn't your mother teach you not to say anything if you don't have anything nice to say? Guess not.

I find William and Kate very heartwarming people and Diana did well teaching them and how they continue to follow in their mother's footstep. Kate is very down to earth as well. Even if they are rich and famous think about their influence that can help many charities. They did request no wedding gifts so they could donate to charities. How many did that for their wedding?
02:15 PM on 07/12/2011
Well, if our moms' birth canals were royal --or merely wealthy---and came equipped with pensions from estates so that we did not need the gifts--I think most of us would have asked our wedding guests to donate to charity. However, most of us aren't born to privilege and needed our gifts. I still donate and assist in charity, though. I don't need a royal to tell me to.

It is apparent from reading the "haters" comments to this article, the Duke and Duchess would have been damned if they did and damned if they didn't. The haters are people who are small minded, underachievers, drinking from their continual half-full glass who believe they have no "luck" and believe if it is not handed to them, they were cheated. Get a life. You get what you give. And they got nothing. End of story.
01:20 PM on 07/12/2011
Actually, I worked hard for my degree and spent my career in a job I hope helped others. The Prince came out of a birth canal and the Duchess slept her way to the" top". Nothing against them personally, but how are they accomplished by their own merit? There is a reason we don't have royalty in this country. the Brits can have them if they want. They should not inconvenience others by costing us $$$$$$ and making our neighborhoods sound like a military invasion is taking place. They can drive or walk like everyone else. When Clinton was here a lot he never made noise or inconvenienced anyone--and he was a lot more powerful and important than anyone in the royal family. I "damn" them for being a public nuisance. I would not "damn" them for staying away or coming in quietly like the other celebrities do. Having reasonable issues with the way things are done is not "hating".

I guess I should have included "forgetful" in my adjectival list. BILL CLINTON CLOSED DOWN ALL RUNWAYS BUT TWO FOR INCOMING AND OUTGOING AIR TRAFFIC AT LAX FOR 1-1/2 HOURS while he sat onboard Air Force One on the runway getting a $200 HAIRCUT from Christophe of Beverly Hills!! Never inconvenienced anyone?????? Not only didn't care who or how many were inconvenienced or missed connecting flights or those who did not arrive in time for their cruise departures, but an absolute elitist! The Duke and Dutchess departed on British Airways and inconvenience no one. LA has closed streets and rerouted traffic for people less dignified than members of the Royal Family. Get real and get your facts straight.

The Duke and Duchess did a wonderful job on their 1st trip to the states, as ambassadors for the UK. They truly were good sports. Reminiscent of Princess Diana's visits.

Swell. They came, she wore, he smiled. They partied and participated in photo ops. Then they went home.

Good. Glad to see the back of ya. Don't hurry back.

I am a property manger for a mixed income housing development. I help families get into affordable housing. I worked for Boston Housing Authority in the eighties and I know all of the directors. So I'm able to cut a lot of red tape. People who are in homeless shelters are our first priority. How many families have you taken off the street? How many families have you taken to food pantries, or places where they can get low cost or free garments? How many families have you helped enroll their children in school? Children who live in shelters have special educational needs because they move around so much. Are you a person who helps them?

Seem like a nice couple. Hope they contributed are enlighted the people in some way, but why on earth would you want to advertize your worst areas to forign royality. England has many skid row areas too and their health care is sad. Average wait to see a doctor six to eight weeks. You might have to travel to the other side of london to see a doctor, not the one in your neighbor hood. Wait sounds a lot like Obama care!!!

What a load of right wing bs. I lived in London for years and had the best health care I've ever had. As for waiting for care...it took the vaunted US medical system 6 months to finally take care of a very bad case of endometriosis for a friend and she has what is considered great insurance. Because her PRIVATE insurance co. Made her jump thru too many hoops, she will never have children. I don't know where you people get off saying our system is so wonderful. My small biz can barely afford to pay for health insurance for our employees. My provider has raised our rates by more than 100% in the last 7 years. In rural America...you know, the Real America you people love to venerate?...finding health care at all is almost impossible. Unless you're a wealthy person with an A-1 insurance policy and the ability to choose from the bet of doctors, our medical system sucks for regular folk.

Nice of them to go visit. Hopefully they wrote the center a big check. The royal family is noted for its charity work and hopefully this visit will help Skid Row children at least get a leg up.

You sound nice, I have made this mistake before, being too personal, but I wanted to tell you that I don't think it matters a hoot how much you give it is the intention behind the gift that matters. your gifts big or small enrich many lives even mine, and do more good than you could imagine. Thank you for everything. One more thing PLEASE be careful when you go Downtown alone!!! It isn't just the theives but folks that have no mental health care can be dangerous, even if they don't mean to be. Blessings of the Gods to you and yours!

I give to noteworthy local charities as opposed to just going down and handing stuff out. It is a fairly intimidating area and my job requires me to purchase stuff down there, especially at the flower mart and the fabric stores but I donate through groups that support sobriety etc.
