Even Babies Need Exercise, New British Guidelines Say

Babies Exercise

MARIA CHENG   07/11/11 02:54 PM ET   AP

LONDON — Preschoolers, even babies, need daily exercise, the British government says in its first-ever exercise advice for its youngest citizens.

In a new campaign against obesity, Britain issued guidelines on Monday saying that children under the age of 5 – including babies who can't even walk yet – should exercise every day.

The new guidance from the British health department said kids under 5 who can walk should be physically active for at least three hours a day. Officials also said parents should reduce the amount of time such kids spend being sedentary while watching television or being strapped in a stroller.

Pudgy toddlers are also a big concern in the U.S., where the Institute of Medicine last month issued diet and activity recommendations for youngsters. It said preschool-aged kids should get at least 15 minutes of exercise for every hour they spend in child care and suggested the US government create dietary guidelines for babies from the time they're born until they are 2 years old. About a third of American adults are obese.

Like the British, American experts say parents should limit the amount of time babies spend in swings, bouncy seats or other equipment while they're awake.

In the U.K., officials said the recommended three hours of activity for kids under 5 should be spread throughout the day. Officials said the children's daily dose of exercise is likely to be met simply through playing but could also include activities such as walking to school.

For babies who can't walk yet, the government said physical activity should be encouraged from birth, including infants playing on their stomachs or having swimming sessions with their parents. It said floor-based play encourages infants to use their muscles and helps bone development. The government said children's individual physical and mental abilities should be considered when interpreting the advice.

"It's vital that parents introduce children to fun and physically active pastimes to help prevent them becoming obese children, who are likely to become obese adults at risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers," Maura Gillespie, head of policy and advocacy at the British Heart Foundation, said in a statement.

Nearly a quarter of British adults are obese, and experts estimate that by 2050 about 90 percent of adults will be heavy.

According to a 2008 health survey that used devices to measure how much people actually exercised, officials found only about five percent of Britons meet the government's minimum physical activity advice – about 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise every week, including some every day.

For children aged 5 to 18, Britain recommends at least one hour of exercise, but that should include intensive activities to strengthen muscles and bones.

In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises children and teenagers to get about one hour or more of physical activity every day.

These findings are not about signing Baby up for Body Pump 101, it's about giving babies the healthiest start possible both physically and cognitively. Babies need to move and the sad truth is that not all babies are being given this opportunity. For more on baby movement and exercise

My word people. They're not telling you to put your kid on an elliptical and let them go at it; they're simply explaining that having your kids have a play time not using some sort of device is good for them. Kids these days are usually plopped into one of those chairs and made to watch tv. When they cry for something else, they're given food. They learn to associate tv and food as comforts instead of playing. It doesn't help that as they get older, playtime is taken out. They're forced to sit all day in schools to learn. That's not bad (learning is good), but kids need breaks too. They need time to run and play and unwind. It's great for developing social skills too. Take your kid to a park, even if they are a toddler, and let them go at it. Put your baby on the floor. The germs, however much you hate them, are good for his/her immune system. The world's a big bad scary place sometimes, but don't let your paranoia become a detriment to your child.

My grandson was in utero when our daughter worked at our fitness center. He was never present during any exercise session after birth but he was constantly exercising and dancing as if he had been trained. At the age of four he is always in motion inside or out as if he has an innate sense that he needs to exercise. Babies have a natural ability and exercise on their own which appears to strengthen muscle as part of the developmental process.

I agree with this though. I dont think its an issue of babies being "fat" but really for their development. If babies are just sitting all day they will not develop the motor skills and wont benefit from the cognitive stimulation of their environment that they get when they explore and crawl around!

OH MY jesus. babies don't need exercise, they can't walk, run, crawl yet! Humans can do those things and are meant to do those things but we created a world of cubicles where we sit and get fatter. Babies are just babies. Let them be and get another hobby!

Oh, for crying out loud. They're babies for Pete's sake. They have enough time to catch up on this "healthy stuff." You all are going too far. Don't these modern day moms swim and do all this stuff eating right etc.? Give the babies a break; they're entering a whole new world that they have to get accustomed to -- now they must exercise too?

There is no fight against obesity. If you want to be fat you dont exercise and eat fatty and gooey and sweet food. If you dont want to be fat you exercise and dont eat so much. Its a matter of choice. ... Go to all you can eat buffet's... fattest people stacking food up sky high on plates. Go to late night resturants and see fat people eating a large breakfast before going to bed.... Matter of choice... Food is not heroin...

It is not lack of activity, television, video games, or anything of the sort that is causing people in "civilized" societies to get heavy.
If these researchers really want to find out what's making us fat they should look into the effects of; high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, corn fed cattle and the quality of meat that comes from them and aspartame among other things added to our food supply. Perhaps a study on the long term effects of eating GMO foods would be a good idea too.
Take a look in history to find out when we started getting fat, then look up when we started corn feeding our people and using GMO foods. Ill bet they'd find one heck of a correlation.
Anyone with interest in these issues can easily find documentaries online, books, news articles, and some comments in medical research journals regarding the effects of corn byproducts in our food supply. With exception to the GMO food issue, I can't find diddly for studies on that.

corn in and of itself i don't think is the issue -- if you look at how much farm fresh corn you would have to eat to get the equivalent in sugars in a soda full of gmo hfcs you start to see where the problem is. I don't think anyone every got fat from eating maque choux. if you ate it by the pound maybe -- but nobody does that.
corn was a normal part of a lot of native diets in the americas -- in moderation. i love a good taco on a hand rolled corn tortilla. i don't think tortillas are making mexico obese -- its adopting the bad food habits of their northern neighbors.

The current economy should solve the obesity problem. The soup lines will just give thin soup.

My God !!! We have been dealing with this since the 1960's when Kennedy told public schools that we must have standards of physical activity. Now 50 years later we are still calling for more exercise ? Let's start again with Phys Ed in schools, hour a day plus recess at noon.
